Sad Day in Sparta

It was one of the saddest days in Sparta that anyone has ever known. At the local church, everyone was gathered to pay their final respects and lay to rest one of Sparta's finest citizens.

Captain Bubba Skinner, along with five other older officers were standing next to a casket waiting to bring it into the church. Lieutenant Lonnie Jamison glanced over at Bubba as he noticed his friend wiping a tear from his cheek.

"I know how you feel Bubba. Newman County Hospital won't be the same without Dr. Robb around." Lonnie replied sadly as he himself wiped a tear from his face.

The two were talking about Dr. Frank Robb who has passed way a week earlier. Just then, Bubba saw his old friend Sheriff Bill Gillespie approach the church with his wife Harriet Gillespie, both were dressed in black.

"Bubba, Lonnie." Bill said as he approached them. "Chief. Glad y'all could make it." Bubba replied as the two went past them and into the church. Just then, Bubba heard something, a sound that he had never heard before. He glanced over at Sergeant Parker Williams who was leaning on the casket and was crying his heart out.

Bubba walked over and put his arm around Parker's shoulder. "It's okay Parker. I know all of us are going to miss him." Bubba told him in a soft voice. Parker looked up as tears fell down his cheeks. "It's not fair Bubba. Why did he have to die?" Parker asked as he wiped the tears from his face.

"I wish I had the answer to that question. I guess the guy upstairs thought it was Doc Robb's time to go." Bubba said as he heard the music start for the funeral. He walked back over to his spot as the six carried the casket into the church, and later to the Sparta Cemetery.
