Alone No Longer
He was the last.
He had gotten so used to being alone. The only one of his kind in the universe. The loneliness compounded by knowing he was responsible. He had destroyed his planet and slaughtered his species, all for the sake of Time and Space. He knew it had been necessary, inescapable. But that did not make living with the consequences any easier, nor did it fill the silent void in his mind where once the voices of Gallifrey resided.
He was the last of the Time Lords.
He sat in the quiet room. Just when he thought the universe had nothing left to teach him, an experience like this reminded him how naive he could be. Of course, it was a human who, by her courage and strength, had shown him that peace, joy, and (he was almost afraid to think it) love were possible in the life of a jaded, cynical old alien.
It was at her bedside he now sat, her ginger hair spread across the pillow. He reached over to brush a stray curl off her face, absentmindedly stroking her hair, lost in his thoughts. He was startled when he felt the touch of her hand. Looking down, he smiled at the sleepy-eyed face of Donna Noble. She lightly rubbed her thumb over the pulse point on his wrist and said, "Hey there, Spaceman."
"Hey, yourself, Earth Girl. How are you feeling?" He helped her sit up, arranging the pillows to give her better support.
She sighed. " A little groggy, but fine. How about you?"
He shrugged. "You know me. I'm always alright."
"So," she asked. "Did I do good?".
He grinned broadly. "Oh, yes. You were brilliant."
At that moment, the hospital door opened and two small carts were wheeled in. Donna reached over and gently picked up one of the bundles, and handed it to the Doctor. She nestled the second to her chest.
The Doctor looked down with awe at the tiny face of his newborn son. Suddenly, his eyes grew wide and his mouth gaped. Looking over at his wife, he whispered, "I can hear them! Donna! I hear our sons' voices!"
"Well, of course you can, you silly prawn. They're Time Lords, just like their father."
And at that moment, the Doctor realized that he would never be alone in the world again. And his hearts sang.
