"Colt!" Hearing his name snapped him out of a daze. For a second he couldn't remember who he was talking to, and then he realized that his girlfriend Sam was waiting on the other line for his answer.

"Yeah, of course, Sammy!" Colt scratched the back of his head nervously.

"Of course what?" Colt could hear the rising anger in her voice. He silently cursed himself for not listening and losing himself in thought.

"Of course to, whatever you asked for?"

"You know what? Bye." Sam hung up.

Colt slammed his phone down and cradled his head in his hands. What a dumbass he was. All Sam ever wanted was for him to listen to her, and he couldn't even do that without screwing it up. Maybe that was why she was always angry at everyone. Colt thought for a minute about Sam's anger issues. Like last week, when she flipped an entire table in the cafeteria. Well, actually that was pretty cool. But then she kicked my motorcycle, I wanted to kill her. Colt shook his head quickly to erase those thoughts. He wouldn't kill Sam. She would probably beat him to it. Colt smiled to himself at the thought of Sam trying to kill him. She was so cute, but so tough. That was one of the many reasons she fell for him. When he had met her at the Monarch Prep party, she had seemed so out of place. Like a white sheep in a field of cows. Sure, he could have hit on and hooked up with any girl at the party, but he liked Sam. Something about her made her seem better than the other girls. Maybe it was her wit, or her attitude, but it made her stand out. And now, here they were, a year later, as a happy couple. Or, a happy, fighting couple. You know what? Girls like Sammy don't come around very often. I'm not going to let her slip through my fingers. Colt picked up his phone and dialed Sam's number again. It rung for a minute until she picked up.

"What?"

"Sammy, I'm sorry. I take you for granted and I don't listen to you always. I admit that, I do. But I know that all you want is for me to listen to you and pay attention to what you have to say, and I promise that from now on, I'll always do that. I swear."

There was a long pause. "Meet me at our spot in 20 minutes." She hung up.

Colt grinned. Maybe his relationship with Sam wasn't perfect. Maybe they fought all the time and he was careless and she had anger problems, but they would find a way to make it work. They always did, after all.
