Kyle Licht Critical Lens Essay
Jay Asher once said, "Everything affects everything.". That merely means anything you do has an affect on someone else. I agree with this quote because everything bottles up and creates a snowball effect. The character Hannah Baker and the audio tapes from the novel 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher relates to the quote as does Lennie Small and the external conflict between Lennie and Curley's Wife from John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men.
Hannah Baker, from 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, is a high school student that killed herself because of depression caused by the students in her school. She became depressed because of certain people that brought calamity to her life. Resultantly, she made audio tapes about the people that led to her suicide. Hannah suffered through the pain she had to deal with but unwisely chose to end her life. Hannah Baker supports the quote because everything that people did to her affects her entire life. As mentioned before, her problems created a snowball effect building up more and more as it goes. Therefore, everything that happened affected everything else.
Also from 13 Reasons Why, the notorious audio tapes that Hannah Baker made supports the quote. The tapes were created by Hannah before her suicide. The tapes contain 13 people that caused Hannah to kill herself. Everyone who did something to Hannah, was either rude, cruel or puerile that greatly affected Hannah. The things that upset Hannah affected her enough to lead to her death. The tapes support the quote because the people regarding them affected Hannah in their own certain way creating a chain reaction. Each person led to the next building and bottling up her emotions ergo creating a snowball effect. They added to her ruth affecting everything.
Semovedly from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the character Lennie Small supports the quote. Lennie is a mentally deficient albeit ebullient grown man. He is best friends with George Milton and works alongside him on a ranch herding horses. Lennie is robust and tall but too nice to be a brute. He was kicked out of his last town because he touched a woman's dress. Every fatuous incident that Lennie causes affects everything else that happens in his life. Such as touching the girl's dress leading to being kick out, leading to breaking Curley's Wife's neck leading to being hunted by Curley and being shot by George eftsoons.
Also, the conflict between Lennie and Curley's Wife supports the quote. Curley's wife is a friendly woman that likes to hang out around the guys on the ranch. As previously stated, Lennie is mentally challenged therefore he likes to pet soft things such as mice, dresses, or hair. Curley's wife lets Lennie touch her hair and Lennie accidentally broke her neck because of his size. Curley is a quick-tempered jerk that takes nonsense from no one. Because of this unfortunate event, everything went wrong affecting everything. By doing that, Curley became furious and went to hunt Lennie down. Thus, everything that happens affects someone else in a way.
Jay Asher once stated, "Everything affects everything.". In other words, Mr. Asher was saying that one thing leads to another or even everything leads to something else. I agree with this quote because it displays the concept of chain reactions and the snowball effect. From the novel 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, the character Hannah Baker and the symbol, audio tapes, aid the quote alike the character Lennie Small and the external conflict between Lennie and Curley's wife from the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
