It is late when Karolina slips into Nico's bed. It always seems quiet in their new hideout, when they aren't saving the city. Old Lace was gone, Chase was in a coma, and these days Victor spends most of his time by himself. Theirs is a dwindling group. At night it's eerily quiet.
Nico stares at the ceiling while she waits in the dark. She thinks of Molly sharing a room with Klara, of them sitting up talking and sharing secrets. Being sisters. She remembers being that young and is glad Molly has someone she's close to.
Karolina always comes to her. Slipping beneath the blankets and illuminating them from underneath like a kid staying up past bedtime to read by flashlight. It's probably for the wrong reasons, Nico thinks as her fingers slide over glowing skin. She and Karolina are both lonely and the team is broken into so many pieces neither knows how to put them together again.
Heat radiates from Karolina as her kisses work lower. Nico arches into it, willing it to burn her and knowing that it won't. She grips narrow shoulders and stares into sunlight.
And only then begins to feel close to home.
