"It's just business. Publicity. Advertising."
"No, it's not. Not to me it isn't. Not when I have to see you kiss and hug someone else over the internet. And especially not when you make me sound like I'm being stupid."
Tears blur my eyes, but I don't let them fall- angry at my body for betraying me this way.
He lets out a deep breath, running a hand through his hair, frustrated. "Stop it, Bella".
"This! I've travelled hours to this Podunk town to see you, and all you can do it rile on me!
For fucks sake, give me a break. This is my life, Bella- you gotta get used to it."
I reel back as if I've been struck, and the look in his eye lets me know that he knows he's gone too far.
"Sorry. I didn't mean that."
I laugh, a small incredulous chuckle. "It's funny, because it seems like that was the first honest thing you've said."
"Things will get better. Its only till the last film is released. Then there's nothing tying me and her together. And you can move to LA and find some work there. I mean, they need doctors everywhere, right?"
There's silence, I can hear the tick of the clock as all we do it stare at each other- his gaze frustrated and mine resigned as realisation dawns.
"It's never going to be any different is it? Every time one of your movies comes out, you're going to play up to the cameras and be seen with another beautiful actress. You're going to kiss and hug and be seen at after parties, in "relationships" and I'm going to sit here, in this Podunk town and watch it happen."
It's almost as if he can see the decision before I make it, because his mouth opens and he goes to speak.
"I don't think I can do this anymore, Edward."
My bleep goes off before he can protest, and I walk to the phone, wiping my tears on my sleeve and clearing my throat before it connects.
"Dr Swan, I know your shift has finished, but can you please come back? There's been an accident on the highway and its all hands on deck."
I nod into the receiver. It's a welcome reprieve, because right now I want to be anywhere but here.
I look up at him once I put the phone down, focusing on the collar of his shirt rather than his face. "You're welcome to stay the night, I don't think I'll be back. Just post the keys through the box when you're done."
"Are you serious? We haven't even talked about this!"
"When do we ever talk, Edward?" I shrug my shoulders and hold my hand out. "It's been weeks since I've heard from you. I get your voicemail, or your publicist."
"I was busy with-"
I nod, not allowing him to finish- but allowing his excuse.
"I know...it's okay."
He stills, and once again were locked in each other's gaze- mine: looking for the guy I fell in love with, and his..I don't even know.
I walk up to him and push a cowlick out his eyes. "I'm sure this is just the start of amazing things for you. Fifteen minute standing ovation? wow."
I'm genuinely happy for him, and let my eyes show it.
"Take care of yourself, okay?" I kiss his cheek, willing myself to memorise his face, the feel of his skin against my lips, one last time.
Annnnnd i'm back. Hopefully I can finish this one...
