counting on clouds.

"She hasn't texted," Naruto says. "Why hasn't she texted?"

Sakura sighs. "For the twentieth time, I don't know why she hasn't texted. It's not like you're dating, gosh, I'm sure the girl is busy!"

Naruto's cheeks color and she hisses, "Do you even miss her?"

Sakura looks furious and Naruto knows she's crossed a line. "Of course I miss Sasuke-chan! I've sent her emails and texts and she never responds, and I've gotten used to it! But you - you keep whining! What the hell is wrong with you today, Naruto?"

"I'd like it if my girlfriend took some time to text me!" Naruto yells, throwing her hands up in the air. Impulsively she checks her phone.

10: 36.

No text messages.

"Your girlfriend?" Sakura says quietly. "How long?"

Shit, I said that out loud, didn't I?

"It'll be a year in two months," Naruto whispers.

"... And neither of you told me. You never even told me you were gay!" Her eyes widen. "The night before she left...?"

"Are you honestly going to cry about this?" Naruto stares at her in disbelief. "Screw this, I'm going."

"Naruto!"

"Hey."

"Sakura knows about us," Naruto says.

"Is she okay?"

"It's fine." Naruto says, trying hard to keep her voice bright. "How are you?"

"I'm fine. How are you?"

"Fine." It's silent between them, now.

"Sasuke?" Naruto swallows. "Can you visit soon?"

"I don't know, maybe I can come down for Christmas?"

"That's so long," Naruto mumbles.

"I'm sorry, honey."

Honey. Sasuke only says that when she feels really bad.

"I'll count the clouds until you're home," Naruto forces a smile, even though Sasuke can't see it, and tries

(tries so fucking hard)

not to cry.

"I have to go, bye." Sasuke hangs up first. Sasuke usually hangs up first.

"Bye," Naruto whimpers, giving in to her tears.

That night she dreams Sasuke is with her again.

They're sitting side by side, simply content to drink in the other's presence.

"Why did you come back?" Naruto asks finally.

"I couldn't be away from you," Sasuke says in that sweet, romantic, rare manner of hers.

Naruto grins and runs her fingers through Sasuke's hair. Instead of the usually messy ponytail, Sasuke's hair cascades down in soft waves. "I really missed you."

"I missed you too." They kiss, soft and slow and sweet.

"I love you."

Naruto wakes up alone, her dream in fragments, with Sasuke's declaration of love still ringing in her head.

It hadn't happened, it had been a dream.

1:24.

No text messages.

She realizes that no, she is not out of tears.

She finds Sasuke on her doorstep shivering, cheeks red and lips blue, and she's acquired quite the adorable eyebrow ring.

Sasuke says nothing, simply pulling Naruto into a tight embrace. And that embrace said so much more than Sasuke ever could.

I've missed you.

I'm sorry.

It's been so long.

I need you.

I love you.

"Tell me," Sasuke whispers. "Do you think we can do this?"

Naruto nods, her tears falling into Sasuke's hair. "Yeah. Yeah, of course. Yeah."

"How many clouds did you count?" Sasuke asks with a small smile.

"I'll never tell." Naruto laughs. "Why don't you come inside?"

The clouds drift on as they rest, entwined in each other's arms.

end.
