Just a little something that popped into my head corresponding with the idea that Sokka was born deaf. It's really not much but I figured I would share anyway.

"I don't get it," Aang says. "How do they work? He can't hear her and she can't see him."

Katara watches as they sit beside one another on the log, together like always. Her brother is smiling widely, the joy finally reaching his eyes. It's the happiest he's been all day and she can tell. The blind girl next to him is also visibly content. She punches the side of his arm and laughs as if he's just told her the funniest joke. Katara is sure that somehow he has, even without saying anything at all. Her brother never says anything at all.

"I think they understand each other," she says, observing their interactions. "They know what it's like to be different from everyone else. They can relate that way. They relate on a different level than you and me do. You can't ever really fully comprehend the difficulties of a situation until you've experienced them yourself. I guess this is just one of those times."

"I guess that makes sense," he nods.

"They're good for each other," she continues. "This is good for them. It's good that Sokka has someone he can be around who understands him, even if she can't literally understand him most of the time. I've been with him every single day of my life and I've never seen him this happy. Even when we were little, before our mother died. He was always so bitter and sad. Now when he smiles, I can see he actually means it. This is good for him."

Aang smiles, and Katara smiles too.

"This is good for all of us."
