Chapter 1- The Beginning
The music was loud, and I was having the worst time.
My parents forced my sisters and I to attend Prince Inuyasha Takahashi's seventeenth birthday party, and as soon as I walked through the castle doors I could tell that it wouldn't be a good night.
"You could at least pretend to have fun and dance like your sisters." My mother, Queen Nisuki of the South said to me as she walked over to the corner I was sulking in.
"No Mother, I'm not in the mood to dance, I'm sorry."
"Kagome, look at your sisters. They didn't want to come either, but they're making the most of it and you should too."
I watch as my sisters Kikyo, Sango, and Ayame danced their hearts out in the beautiful dresses they were wearing. They were more sociable than I was, so I wasn't surprised to see them making the most of the situation.
My oldest sister, Kikyo, put on a strapless, floor-length, glittery ice blue gown with silver heels. She also had on a diamond necklace, matching earrings, and a diamond tiara with blue jewels. Her makeup and hair were nice as well. She had on a soft pink lip gloss, a little mascara and eyeliner, and her black hair that she usually kept straight as a pin was now curled and pinned to one side.
My second sister, Sango, had on a strapless, dark purple dress with black lace and a pair of black wedges. For accessories, she chose to wear a silver heart-shaped locket, small black hoop earrings and a diamond tiara with purple jewels. Makeup wise, she only wore a little clear lip gloss, purple eye shadow and a little eyeliner and mascara. Her normally wavy dark brown hair was straightened out and it hung down her back beautifully.
My third sister is Ayame and she's a wolf demon. She had on a pink knee-length dress that had a black strap around the waist and pink heels to match. She put on silver heart-shaped locket as well, with silver heart-shaped earrings and a diamond tiara with pink jewels. She didn't like wearing a lot of makeup, so she put on clear lip gloss and nothing else. And her fiery red hair that she always wore in pigtails, was now up in a neat-as-she-could-manage bun.
Ayame and Sango were adopted. Our father, King Kenta of the South, found Sango a couple of years ago, alone in a bad area of our kingdom where demons nearly attacked her. My father and his men destroyed them and instead of sending Sango to a foster home he took her in instead. And ever since that day Sango has been taking special self-defense classes. A year later he found Ayame in a similar situation. He found her while he was out hunting and got to her before the pack of wolves surrounding her could harm her. Kikyo and I are our parents birth children, but they treat us just the same so it's not like it matters. I've grown close to Sango and Ayame. We've been inseparable ever since they adjusted to living with us, and I loved them so much. Kikyo on the other hand... well, we were close once, but things have been different as of lately.
"Honey, please go and dance, just once." My mother continued to beg.
"No Mom, I don't want to."
"Could you at least get out of this corner and walk around? You look beautiful."
I looked at my dress, it wasn't anything special, just a strapless black dress that ended right above my knees with little ruffles on the bottom half. I also threw on a pair of strappy silver heels, black stud earrings, a diamond tiara with silver jewels, and the same silver locket as Sango and Ayame. We put a picture that was taken of the three of us when we were twelve in front of our family's lake house on the inside. My makeup was just as simple as my dress, a light pink lipstick and some mascara and eyeliner. Nothing too fancy.
"If I go out and sit on the fountain will it make you happy?"
"Yes, very happy." She said smiling.
"Off I go then," I got up from my seat and walked out of the back door. My mother watched me go before she returned to my father's side.
I was the only one out here, which I enjoyed. I glanced around one more time to be sure before I made my way over to sit on the edge of the fountain. Once I sat down, I closed my eyes to enjoy the cool night air and the smell and sound of the water.
"Hey there, what are you doing out here?"
I opened my eyes quickly to find the person that had spoken to me. It was Prince Inuyasha Takahashi of the North. The birthday boy, and definitely the hottest guy I'd ever seen. He had on a dark red tuxedo vest with a black button up underneath, a bow tie that matched the color of the vest, black dress pants and black dress shoes. His long silver hair was down and I really wanted to touch it, along with the adorable pair of ears on his head. I also wanted to spend all night looking into his gorgeous golden eyes... oh, I needed to get a hold of myself.
"Prince Inuyasha… ah... happy birthday." I sounded so nervous, how embarrassing. I stood and curtsied to hide it as best as I could.
"Thank you, and no need to say 'prince'. Just Inuyasha is fine with me." He said with a short laugh.
"Right, of course."
"You know who I am, but I'm afraid that I don't know who you are."
"Me? I'm Kagome."
"Princess Kagome of the Southern Kingdom?"
"I'm honored to have you here, Princess Kagome." He bowed.
"You can just call me Kagome, and I'm the one who should be honored."
"And why is that?"
"Well... you're one of the princes of the highest kingdom in our country."
"You're one of the princesses of the second highest kingdom."
"Yes, but, your family has more power than mine."
"Is that important?"
Was it? Why were we even talking about this?
"You never answered my question." He said.
"What question was that?"
"I asked why you were sitting out here all alone."
"Oh, I just wanted some air."
"If you're finished, would you like to come inside and dance with me?"
The prince just asked me to dance with him. Guess my mom was going to get what she wanted after all.
I nodded, and he offered his hand. I took it and we walked in together to dance to a song I vaguely recognized.
Hold on to me, love
You know I can't stay long
All I wanted to say was
I love you and I'm not afraid, oh
Can you hear me?
Can you feel me in your arms...
"Do you know what song this is?" I asked as he rocked us back and forth.
"It's a song by Evanescence, but I can't remember the name of it. Why do you ask?"
"I was just curious, I think I've heard it before."
"Do you like this kind of music?"
"I love it."
He laughed a little. "That makes two of us."
I'll miss the winter
A world of fragile things
Look for me in the white forest
Hiding in a hollow tree(Come and find me)
I know you hear me
I can taste it in your tears
Holding my last breath
Safe inside myself
Are all my thoughts of you
Sweet raptured light, it ends here tonight...
Tonight wasn't as bad as I thought. I was having a good time dancing with Inuyasha. As we danced, I looked around to find my family. Sango and Ayame were standing by the door to the backyard, and it looked like they were whispering and giggling and pointing in my direction. No doubt they were going to grill me for information later. My parents were nowhere to be found, but Kikyo was, and it looked like she was glaring at me. What did I do?
Don't be afraid
Calling me, calling me
As you fade to black...
Inuyasha pulled away from me and looked into my eyes. I knew that it wasn't the smartest thing to do, but come on, he was leaning towards me... and those eyes... and... I really wanted to kiss him. But, just before our lips could touch Ayame tapped my shoulder.
"Hey Kagie, it's time to go." She said with a half apologetic, half amused look on her face.
My face must've given something away because Inuyasha chuckled as he let me go.
"I hope I'll see you again, Kagome." He took my hand and kissed the back of it before he walked away.
Ayame pulled me outside and toward our carriage. Why we were still using them, I didn't know because it wasn't like cars didn't exist, but the carriages were nice and my parents like them a lot so it's not a big deal. The one my parents rode in was already gone, so they must've gone home before us. That sucked for me. It meant that I was going to be stuck with Sango and Ayame and all their questions the entire time.
"Well, well, welly, well, well..." Ayame started, the second we walked outside.
"Can it, Ayame." I said and avoided looking at her.
"You know that you have to tell us everything."
"There's nothing to tell."
"That's a load of bull and you know it Kagie."
Kikyo and Sango were already waiting inside the carriage when our driver helped Ayame and I up and into it. Sango looked like she was ready to pounce on me to get me to talk, and Kikyo looked pissed again.
"So, Kagome," Sango started after a few minutes of silence.
"So, Sango," I played along.
"Don't you 'so, Sango,' me. Spill it. I want to know everything."
I could play dumb all I wanted, but I knew that they weren't going to let it go until I told them everything. I told them what happened from the time I walked outside, to the time I walked back inside to dance with Inuyasha. I even told them that I thought he was the most attractive guy ever, and if Kikyo hadn't laughed at me I wouldn't have remembered that I wasn't just talking to Sango and Ayame.
"You're too easy, Kagome." She said.
I think that Sango and Ayame forgot that she was there too because they didn't speak for a while.
"What do you mean by that?" Sango asked.
"She just met the guy and she was going to let him kiss her."
"I… you don't…" She was right. I was easy.
"That doesn't make her easy, Kikyo." Sango said.
"Yeah, it was just going to be a kiss," Ayame agreed. "You can't call someone easy over something as small as a kiss."
"You guys are making it sound like we actually did kiss." I said, a little embarrassed.
"You were going to. I saw how you two were leaning into each other." Ayame said and leaned into me with puckered lips.
"Quit it you pervert," I laughed and pushed her away. "And, for all you know, I would've pulled away from him at the last second."
"I doubt that." Kikyo said.
"What would you have done in that situation?" Sango asked.
Kikyo didn't answer and Sango rolled her eyes. The rest of the ride was quiet after that. When we got home Kikyo was the first to get out of the carriage and into the the castle, Sango, Ayame and I walked in together.
"Don't worry about her Kags, you aren't easy." Sango said.
"She's only jealous that Inuyasha didn't ask her to dance. I could tell by the way she was watching you dance with him." Ayame said.
I didn't say anything. I can't even remember the last time Kikyo and I were on good terms, or what happened to suddenly have us on bad terms.
Sango, Ayame and I have been room neighbors since they moved it. Their rooms were on either side of mine with Sango's on my left and Ayame's on my right. Kikyo and our parents had rooms on this floor as well, but they were further down the hall. All the rooms in this area were designed the same, but they were decorated differently. They all had a walk-in closet, a full bathroom, queen sized beds (except for my parents who had a king sized), a fireplace, and flat screens mounted on the wall in front of the bed. The only difference was that my room was decorated with mint green things, Sango's royal blue, Ayame's lilac, and Kikyo's white.
As I changed out of my dress and into my black nightgown I thought of two things.
What was going on with Kikyo. And when I could see Inuyasha again.
