"Natalie, I love you," he declared. "I always have and I always will. I love you, I love you, I love you. Will you go out with me?"
She had to think about it for a moment. She wasn't sure if she loved him, but she knew she had almost no chances of meeting her true love in this depressing town. Dennis might be her only shot at romance.
"Natalie! Guess what came in the mail today! I'm shipping out in a couple of weeks!" Dennis said excitedly as he ran into Sylvia's Honky Tonk.
"The army?" Natalie asked, confused.
"Dental school!" Dennis said with more excitement than before.
"Oh Dennis! You got in!" she said as she kissed her boyfriend on the cheek. "Congratulations."
"You're so lucky to be getting out of this town," said Lorraine.
"Actually, I've been thinking about not going," Dennis said slowly, all the excitement leaving his voice.
"But it's your dream," said Natalie.
"And you're so smart," Lorraine added.
"And it's not like there's anything to keep ya here," Natalie stated.
"Oh, but there is," said Dennis. "The most wonderful girl in the whole town happens to be my girlfriend." He put his arms around Natalie.
"Dennis, you're so sweet," Natalie smiled.
"Gosh, I wish someone were secretly in love with me," Lorraine complained.
"You're too young," her mother, Sylvia, objected.
While Sylvia and Lorraine got into an argument about the right age to fall in love, Dennis and Natalie sat down at a nearby table and started talking.
"You shouldn't stay in town just for me," Natalie said.
"But I love you, Natalie," said Dennis. "You could always come with me."
Natalie knew she didn't love him. They'd been dating for a while and the relationship was just going nowhere. She wanted it to mean more, she really did, but it just couldn't. Dennis didn't see it that way, though. He was still head over heals in love with her, no matter what she said or did.
Lorraine was still talking, but Natalie only caught the end of the discussion. Lorraine had asked their friend Henrietta for back-up.
Now Henrietta was a very peculiar girl. She had this little need to start singing when asked a question. "Well, since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell."
If Dennis wasn't already going out with Natalie, this might be an occasion that he would join in on, but not today.
Suddenly, the loud sound of a motorbike was heard in the distance. "What in the hell?" Sylvia yelled over the noise.
Everyone dashed outside to see what was going on. The most beautiful man rode up on a motorbike with a guitar on his back. He was everything Natalie ever wanted in a man. If she wasn't dating Dennis, she would definitely pursue this roustabout. But, she didn't think she had the heart to break up with sweet Dennis, especially when he thought everything was perfect. No, she would just remain as Dennis' girlfriend. That's how things had to be.
