LbN: Second place in the poll. One-shot.
A Glimpse of Heaven
When you look me in the eyes,
I catch a glimpse of heaven.
I find my paradise,
When you look me in the eyes.
More and more I start to realize,
I can reach my tomorrow,
I can hold my head up high,
And it's all because you're by my side...
When you look me in the eyes...
Rachel felt warm, even though it was probably near midnight. And she knew she ought to be worried…this place was deserted. Still, as she walked through the fairground, she felt only calmness. Music was coming from the other side of the carnival. She made her way past all of the empty rides and saw a man standing between the brightly lit carousel and the tunnel of love.
"Uncle Albert!" she exclaimed, running to give him a hug.
"My little Rachel. Welcome."
"But how are you here? You're…you've been gone for years."
"Indeed I have. And now you are too."
"I'm…dead?" Rachel asked. He nodded. She should be panicking at the mere thought. She hasn't achieved superstardom yet. She hasn't married Quinn, or taken a vacation to Greece, or any of the good stuff on her life plan. She should be panicking, but all she feels is the same warm calmness. "Oh."
"You are special, dear girl. You have a choice."
"You can go on," he said, pointing to the tunnel. "Or you can…stay."
"You mean, I can go back?"
"No, Rachel. You can't go back. But…should you choose the carousel…I think you'll find that it's a nice substitution. For a while that is."
"What does that mean?"
"To choose the carousel would mean you stay in limbo. Right here, your soul going round and round, until the person you've attached yourself to fulfills their destiny."
"I'd be haunting someone?"
"Think of it as more a…guardian angel type deal."
"So this is heaven?"
"The beginning stages of it, sure."
Rachel took a few steps toward the carousel. "And I can choose who…who I stay with?"
"You need only say their name."
"But…will they be able to go on with me? Once they've…what did you say it was? Completed their destiny?"
"That I cannot answer, dear."
"Is it a carousel for everyone?"
Her uncle just smiled
Rachel looked back and forth. She walked toward the carousel finally and allowed her uncle to help her onto one of the unicorns. "Quinn Fabray," she said quietly. The music grew louder, and the carousel started to turn.
"You're here again," Quinn whispered.
"I told you," Rachel said. "I can't leave."
"I miss you. So much."
"But I'm the only one who can see you."
"And that has to be enough, Quinn. I had to come back to you?"
"I was afraid to go on without you."
There was silence in the room.
"I wish I could hold you again," Quinn said.
"I know…I miss that the most, I think."
"How long…how long do I have you for?"
"Until you…I'll never leave you, Quinn."
"Good," the blonde whispered. "You'd better still be here in the morning."
"Yes dear," Rachel said.
