Near dawn, I came to the town, rented a small room, and slept during the day for the night's events to come. Nightmares haunted my dreams and I woke gasping for breath and when I heard a knock at my door my hand shot under my pillow to my blaster the other for my sunglasses. I quickly slipped them on and pressed the side, they reformed themselves to eyeglasses, and I saw the person outside.

When I was satisfied, that it wasn't a Controller I muttered. "Come in," in French.

A young woman came in and gave a small bow to me. "Monsieur," she muttered then started to leave.

"Mademoiselle, what time is it?" I muttered swinging my legs out of bed and grabbed some of my clothes.

I slipped my shirt on as she said, "Almost nine," she said, and I nodded.

I nodded. "Please tell the front desk to prepare my bill," I said.

Ten minutes later I walked out of my room fully clothed in black and my blasters in shoulder holsters under my jacket my helmet in my hand a small pack of gear over my shoulder. I made my way down stairs to the front desk when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I turned my eyes to get a better look and for less than a second I froze.

Alan! The Yeerks are using Ketarians on Earth, I thought.

I did my best to keep from his gaze as I walked outside and soon he passed me and I exhaled deeply starting down the side walk then I felt a hand on my shoulder. "I'm sorry to bother you but..." Alan's voice said, before he walked around me and got a good look of my face despite the glasses.

"It can't be," me muttered his eyes going wide in shock his other hand moving then froze then looked down at the barrel of my blaster under my jacket against his chest.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," I muttered then my eyes' looking around making sure no one was watching.

I looked back at him when I saw no one was. "Now we are going to walk outside nice and peaceful like. One wrong move I don't care if we're the middle of a crowd I'll shoot you where you stand. Understand?" I said, and after a moment, he nodded.

With me keeping my blaster on him we walked out of the building and outside to a side ally out of sight. Once there keeping one still on him I pulled out my other blaster and set it to the right setting.

"So what happens now Dresari?" Alan's Yeerk asked me.

I gave him a small smile. "Well for starters you tell me your name," I said.

He frowned at me. "You know..." he started and stopped at the hard look on my face.

"Sub Visser Eighty Six," he said, and I nodded.

"Not moving up in the world much are you, but either way pleased to meet you," I said, then raised my blaster up and shot him.

As soon as the bolt hit him, he collapsed down on the ground and I crouched down looking at him. For a few minutes, I remained there until he stirred holding his head and he looked up at me.

A giant smile spread across both our faces. "It's good to see you again my friend," I said, holding out my hand and helped him to his feet and he embraced me like a brother.

He stepped back after a moment looking at me a tear in his eye. "Did you kill it?" he asked, and I shook my head.

He lowered his eyes then looked up at me. "At least our people can have hope once they know..." he started to say.

"They can't."

He looked at me. "think about it Alan, if the Yeerks or even Visser Three know that I'm alive he'll have more than enough to declare full out war on Earth," I said, and after a moment he nodded.

"But how did..." he started ten he snapped his fingers pointing at me.

"The ships... the ships that escaped the planet," he said, and I shrugged.

"It's only stunned it we have maybe twenty minutes or maybe a little less and there are a few things I got to know. One I was going find out tonight or tomorrow one way or another. The other the only way I was ever going to know before you spotted me was if she ever came to Earth or..." I said, dragging off.

He sighed lowered his eyes then looked at me and I closed my eyes and moaned. "No, not again," I muttered and I felt his hand on my shoulder.

"Duchess Johanna was taken in the throne room of the palace she surrendered in order to save lives," he said.

I nodded that's my sister, I thought.

"And where is she now?" I asked.

"She's Visser Seven and her Yeerk is the exact opposite of her and a butcher almost as bad as Visser Three," Alan said, and my face fell into my hand.

"Oh Johanna I swear I'll tear that Yeerk from your brain and watch it die of Kadroana starvation," I muttered looking back up at Alan.

"Back to the reason why I'm in France I know the Yeerks are building something here in the local mine can you tell me anything about it?" I asked.

He looked at me then we both turned at the sound the chiming clock tower. "Commander I don't have much time but I can tell you this. You got the right idea they are building underground using the town's old mine as a starting point and we both know for what," he said.

We looked at each other for a second and I nodded. "They're building a Yeerk Pool? They're moving on this continent?" I asked, and he nodded.

"It will be finished in a couple of days," he muttered.

I sighed. "One was bad enough if they set up shop here... where's the Kadroana?" I asked.

"It's coming tomorrow and I'll tell you everything I know my friend but you got to promise me one thing," he said.

"When you attack and burn their plans to the ground and when you encounter me and I'm still infected, don't hesitate to kill me," he said.

I looked at him hard. "Alan..." I started.

"Promise me! You don't know what kind of nightmare I'm living with this monster in my head! Controlling my every thought, and action you must promise me!" he said, urgently.

He and I looked each other me seeing one of the strongest men I knew broken and all I could do was nod. Forty minutes later, I stood in the shadows as Alan walked out of the ally once more under the Yeerk's control with neither them holding no memory of our meet tonight and him telling me what he knew. Once he was out of sight, I stepped out of the shadows and walked in the other direction.
