Note: We're going in slightly Ultimate-Spiderman AU territory here. This technically takes place post-Death-of-Spiderman, except he wasn't caught in the truck explosion, and therefore didn't die. He also got Kingpin locked up before Norman Osborn broke out and went on a vengeance-trip. This is a somewhat Ultimate version of the Back in Black storyline of the regular Marvel Universe. Please, review and comment (so I know to keep writing this). I own absolutely nothing relating in any way, shape, or form to Spiderman.

"I really am so ready to get out of here. I feel like I'm wrapped in invisible red tape. Literally. Like that's the only thing that's keeping me here." Peter said, sitting up a little straighter in his hospital bed.

"Well, considering that you nearly died, I'd say it's better to wait until the doctors say you're good to go." Mary Jane offered, sitting next to him.

"Come on, I've been through way worse than that."

"You were unconscious for almost an entire day."

"Yeah. There was this big vigil outside when news started spreading that Spiderman was in the hospital, totally touch-and-go."

"Wow. That's…touching. But also really bad."

"Why's that bad?"

"People held a vigil for me, while I was under in a hospital out of costume. I think that means the secret identity is now not much of a secret."

"Well, you did get in a huge fight in the middle of your own neighborhood without your mask on, and several people yelling your name."

"Any cameras? Any video? Any pictures?"

"You don't want to know how many."

Peter groaned and put his hands over his face.

"We're all so dead. Y'know, it's funny, but I always figured my identity going public would take something a lot more important. Like, heroes being forced by the government to reveal their identities, and everyone taking sides and beating the crap out of each other. Or some evil organization kidnapping me and unmasking me on national TV. Not just another fight where I just happened to lose my mask."

"Just another fight? You nearly died!"

"Yeah, well, I'm still here, aren't I?"

"I guess you are."

They moved in closer and hugged.

"So, this vigil…were there candles? Was it a candlelight vigil?" Peter asked jokingly.

"Maybe a few people had candles."

"No way."

Endnote: Sure, a pretty lighthearted beginning, but given that the rest of the story is just going to be a mess of angst, violence, and Spiderman going Spider-postal, I figured it could do with a happy chapter or two to start with
