Flay: After the Chase

"Are you two alright?"

Roxis and Nikki nodded at Vayne as he approached them. "What happened with Flaya?" Nikki demanded, causing the others to turn towards him eagerly.

"Well... he... umm," Vayne mumbled incoherently. He wasn't sure how he felt about being Flay's sidekick, but he definitely didn't want anybody finding out about this.

"Yeah, what?"

"He dropped a tin pot on Anna somehow and knocked her out. I took her to the infirmary."

"Seriously? Anna got knocked out? Whoa... Flay's really something when he's serious," Jess remarked. Roxis waved his hand dismissively. "Never mind that. More importantly Vayne," The way Roxis fixed him with a straight face scared Vayne, "Did you manage to catch Flay?"

Somehow, Vayne knew lying at this point would be pretty obvious – especially to Roxis, who had actually (now that his Mana had turned them into 'friends') learned to read his face.

"He said it was our fault we got into this mess," Vayne answered, "He said that he wasn't the one who forced us to chase him."

"A decent argument from Flay~" Pamela giggled, "That's a first."

"So you mean he revealed-" Nikki started, but Vayne shook his head. No, no, he knew where this would lead. Nope. Not going there.

"I lost him after that. Anyway... maybe we shouldn't chase him anymore."

"Aww... too bad," Pamela sighed, "I wanted to unmask him. You should've attacked him, Vayne!"

"I would've died," Vayne mumbled, but thankfully they let the matter drop.

Later that evening...

"So you're saying he forced you to become his sidekick?" Roxis asked (this was the third time, was the idea really that bad?), "And you agreed? Vayne, you do realize Flay couldn't actually kill you, right?"

Vayne didn't say anything, but clearly his face showed he hadn't realized that and well. This was. Just. Never mind. Roxis wasn't going to care. He wasn't interested in the nonsense Vayne got up to and he was not worried about him. Really and truly he wasn't... honestly! … … …maybe a little, though. He didn't want Vayne to die pointlessly – not that Flay's… activities would kill him, just he wasn't sure if they were entirely… safe.

"Just... be careful... it can't possibly be good for your health. Or your studies. Or for the rest of us in general."

"And if you don't want to do something, just say no."

"...you can refuse people. You know that, right?"

"Uh, yeah."

This wasn't getting them anywhere. "Just make sure he doesn't bother me in this stupidity." There. Flay and his Mana got along a little too well and he definitely didn't like that.

"I'll... umm, try my best."

...he was not looking forward to this.
