It had been quite a few hectic weeks since the announcement of Sam's pregnancy. All of her colleagues at work were informed and the couple had received many congratulations. She even received a big teddy bear from Big Mac which Sam thought was very sweet and she placed it in the corner of her living room. Sam had never expected her life to turn out like this. She may have only been Tom for less than a year, but she knew that he was special and that their baby was going to have a wonderful life with Tom as a dad.
Sam found herself at home in the flat by herself, awaiting Tom's arrival home from work. For once, she had tried her hand at cooking, and it had been somewhat successful, apart from slightly burning the roasted vegetables in the oven. This was quite an achievement considering Sam had never really used a cooker often and she normally relied on microwave meals or simple shop bought salads. Now she was expecting a baby, Tom had become a lot more stricter when it came to providing Sam with enough food to eat. He wanted both of his girls to be healthy."I'm home." Tom called through from the front door as he recovered from the treacherous weather that had engulfed over Holby.
"I've made dinner." Sam answered as she started to serve up the food onto the plates but was interrupted as she felt Tom's cold hands wrap around her stomach.
"You're freezing!" She squealed as she placed her hands on top of his.
"Well it is raining outside." Tom stated with a hint of sarcasm in his voice which made Sam pull a smirk.
"You're so funny. You should be a comedian." She laughed slightly before she pulled back and picked up the plates. "Come on. Food. And I'm starving!" She ordered as she walked over to the little glass dining table.
"Wow! Sam Nicholls is actually hungry!" Tom joked as he sat down and pulled Sam down onto his lap. "Only kidding with you sweetheart." He whispered before planting a gentle kiss to her lips.
After a rather enjoyable meal which Tom ate within minutes, they ended up snuggled together on the sofa, Sam slowly drifting off to sleep. Tom looked down to her and smiled to himself. She was beautiful, his Sam was the most wonderful person in the world and nothing was going to take her away from him. He slowly lifted up his hand and stroked her hair gently. He knew that this was the most comforting thing for her and often made her sleepy. As Sam let out a big exhale, Tom pressed a kiss to her head and held her close to him.
"Get some rest sweetheart…" He whispered softly as he felt Sam shift a little in his arms.
"I will." Sam muttered sleepily as she kissed his cheek and settled down in his arms.
They had been lying there for quite sometime, Tom watching television while Sam slept peacefully in his arms. The atmosphere soon drifted when Tom could hear Sam muttering to herself.
"No…no.." She muttered and screwed up her face.
"Hush Sam…" Tom whispered soothingly to grunted and twitched.
"You're dreaming sweetheart…" Tom whispered again as he stroked her cheek and Sam's eyes snapped open. She looked around before she buried her head in his chest.
"It's okay Sam. You were dreaming.." He said as he moved some hair from her face.
"Sorry.." She muttered before she hugged into him tightly. Just as Sam did so, she winced a little.
"Sam? Are you okay?" Tom asked alarmed.
"Yeah, I'm just sore.." She replied, screwing up her face slightly.
"Sore? Where? You're stomach?" Tom asked more questions, clearly getting worried now.
"Tom…it's back pain…I'm bound to be getting it." She sat up and sighed slightly.
"Are you sure?" He asked rubbing her back.
"Tom please…stop fussing. Our little monkey is going to be fine.."
"Well I'm sorry if I'm worrying about our baby…" He said defensively as he stood up and looked down to her.
"I know you're bound to be worried Tom…I'm sorry…" She apologized realizing what she had just done. She didn't want an argument, not now.
"I really thought you understood how I felt Sam…" He sighed as went through to the kitchen.
"Tom…babe.." Sam called after him but he was having none of it. He sat down at the dining table and put his head in his hands. He didn't want to come off as being paranoid but the thought of his little boy dying just made him that much more protective over his and Sam's baby. He wanted his little one safe and well, no harm done to it at all.
Sam sighed to herself as she placed her hands over her face and she felt silent tears fall down her face. She had been so selfish. She didn't mean to sound so snappy but she really wanted Tom to understand that they were going to make a good job looking after their baby and that nothing was going to happen to it. She knew nothing would harm her or the baby. She was a strong young woman and Tom brought out the best in her and was very protective, nothing would ever go wrong.
After consuming a mug of warm coffee Tom was ready to face Sam again. They needed to discuss their little argument. He needed to make sure they were okay. He didn't want anything or anyone to destroy their perfect relationship. He already had to contend with Dylan being a pain, he didn't want anything else to jeopardize it either.
"Sam?" He spoke gently as he stepped into the living room. He chuckled to himself as he saw Sam completely out of it, sleeping on the sofa. Her face was tear stained so it was evident that she had in fact been crying. He felt so bad, so annoyed at himself for storming off like he did. What if his over protective attitude was annoying Sam? What if she thought he was irritating her?
Sam awoke suddenly feeling a dip in the sofa. When she saw Tom she smiled slightly before stretching her arms.
"Hey sleepy." He whispered. "Listen…about before…"
"I'm sorry…" Sam cut him off before he could say anymore.
"I really though you understood how I felt…"
"I acted like an idiot Tom, I said something I shouldn't have and I'm sorry…"
"You don't understand how I'm feeling though do you?"
Sam let out a little sigh. "Tom. I know it must have been hard...actually. I don't know. I'm trying. I really am trying to understand...believe me...please.." She whispered.
He shook his head. "I don't expect you to understand Sam. But I expect you to understand that I'm still bloody terrified. I was worried and you just shoved it off to one side as if what I think doesn't count for anything."
"I didn't mean for it to sound like your opinion didn't count...really I never...I just...I was so stupid Tom...you really don't deserve me at all..."
"Don't say that. I love you Sam. So much that it brings a smile to my face every time you speak. I over-reacted. I know but it's hard for me…"
"You're not over-reacting at all…" She shuffled over on the sofa and cuddled into him.
Tom sighed and kissed the top of her head. "I just don't want anything to happen to the baby Sam…" He whispered, emotion thick in his voice. Sam pulled back and looked up into his eyes. She lifted both her hands and placed them on his cheeks.
"I know...nothing will happen to the baby. She.." Sam put emphasis on the word she as she knew Tom thought it was going to be a girl. "She will have you wrapped around her little finger and you're going to be a brilliant father to her I promise...nothing will happen sweetheart…"
"You don't know that though…"
"I know...I don't...but we're going to do a bloody good job of looking after her...we'll take care of her Tom...she's our little gem..."
He nodded. "Try our best. I'll want to wrap her in cotton wool when she's born. It'll help me. but it will do nothing for her." He sighed shaking his head slightly.
"I know you're scared Tom but you're not alone. I'm going to be here every step of the way.."
"Thank you Sam.." He whispered as his hands moved down to her slightly rounded stomach, rubbing it gently."Come on mister, lets watch some TV…" Sam said and with that, Tom flicked the buttons on the remote control and they sat back and relaxed, forgetting about anything that had just happened in the previous hour.
