Chapter 11: Caught
"Where is he?" Cornelia paced back and forth in her living room, with her phone clasped firmly in one hand. She was wearing her maid of honour dress, which Hay Lin had designed herself. It was a light blue dress, just above her knees, that spread out at the bottom. It had a white ribbon around the waist, along with light blue straps which held the dress on the shoulders.
Just then, her phone started vibrating and she abruptly answered it.
"Zach?" she said his name quickly, hoping it was him.
"Cornelia, is everything alright?" Caleb's voice called from the other line. Cornelia sighed and closed her eyes before replying quickly.
"I'm fine", she mumbled.
He continued, "Do you have a ride? Want me to come and get you?"
She hastily responded, "No, no, no, it's fine. Zach should be on his way over."
She heard him sigh and clear his throat, "Uh, yeah, alright. I'll see you there then, I guess."
"See you." Cornelia turned her phone off quickly and sat down on the couch. These past few days had been nerve wrecking for her, but not because of Will's wedding. She had begun to realise that Caleb was always there for her whenever she needed any help, whereas Zach was always too busy with other things. She was also spending more and more time with Caleb, than with her actual boyfriend, which scared her. She didn't want to end up having feelings for Caleb – he obviously didn't seem to have any feelings for her and besides, she was already in a relationship. And that was exactly what she kept mentioning to herself since they had met at her father's office.
Cornelia's phone started buzzing again and this time, she looked at the caller ID before answering, "Zach, where are you?"
He responded just as quickly, "Yeah, I'm on my way over now. Just a few blocks away..."
"Zach, we're getting late!"
He breathed deeply, "Sorry, I'll be right there."
"Mhm." She quickly turned her phone off and walked over to grab her clutch bag, before rushing out the door.
"Will! Sorry, I'm late!" Cornelia rushed inside the room to see Will getting the last minute touches done on her hair and makeup. She looked beautiful in her long white gown; her red hair was glowing, along with her complexion. She had a few loose curls of hair in the front, and the rest was tied back neatly.
"Don't worry; you're not late."
Cornelia sighed in relief, as she turned to see the other girls sitting around admiring the bride. Irma looked great in her light orange dress, and next to her was Hay Lin in her long purple gown. Taranee was wearing a light red dress, and she got up after hearing a knock at the door.
"Matt asked me to check on Will, so is everything alright?"
Cornelia spun around and she could see a peak at Caleb. He looked stunning in his black and white suit, and Cornelia couldn't help but stare at him. He caught her gaze and admired how beautiful she looked in her dress. Cornelia quickly looked away, after realising what she was doing and Caleb was snapped out of his Cornelia trance once Taranee replied back.
"Well, why couldn't he come and see himself?"
Will turned around to face the door and held her arms out, "No! I told him not to! He can't see me now! It's bad luck!"
Everyone laughed at Will, who sighed in relief as Caleb didn't rush off to get Matt.
Caleb stepped inside the room and smiled, "Relax; there's nothing to worry about. You all look great." After his last few words, his gaze landed on Cornelia, and his smile widened. Just then, Zach knocked on the door and walked up to Cornelia, wrapping his arms around her waist.
"Especially you." Zach nuzzled his head into her neck and sighed.
Caleb felt his heart breaking as he saw the display of affection. He averted his gaze to the ground and swallowed the lump in his throat. "I'll see you all inside." His voice was hoarse and he quickly carried himself away from the scene.
Cornelia was sat on a park bench. She swung her legs, feeling surprisingly cheerful, as she lifted a spoon and savoured the taste of strawberry ice cream.
She turned to see Caleb a few feet away from her. He was carrying his bag and looked as if he was prepared for work.
"Hey." She smiled at him as he sat down next to her.
There was an awkward silence. Finally, Caleb spoke up, "So how is everything?"
Cornelia turned to him and uncertainly nodded her head, "Great, I'm going on vacation soon."
He nodded in reply, "That's...Great."
"...To Spain." She glanced over at him, "...With Zach."
His heart stopped beating at that moment, and he felt her gaze burning on him. He forced a grin on his face and turned to her, "I hope you have a good time then."
Cornelia felt something building inside her. She almost felt as if she had wanted him to tell her that he was sad she was leaving for a while. What is this feeling?
She shrugged it off and smiled widely, "Yeah, I can't wait."
Caleb smirked at her jokingly, "Just don't do anything stupid."
She raised an eyebrow at him – the look that would drive most men crazy. "Like what?"
Cornelia scooped a bit of ice cream with her finger and dabbed it on his nose, which made them both laugh.
"And what was that for?" he grinned, before wiping it away with the back of his hand.
"For being a dork."
Caleb gazed at Cornelia, a smile forming on his lips without him realising.
She noticed this, "What?"
"I..." his smile faded, but they both kept looking at each other. Realising that he had nothing to say to her, he shook his head and looked the other way, "...Never mind."
"Well, I should get going." Cornelia stood up and was about to turn around and walk away, when Caleb called.
"Do you want a ride?"
Cornelia turned around and bit her lip, "Don't you have to get back to work soon?"
Caleb shrugged, "It doesn't matter. It'll only take a few minutes."
He nodded his head to his right, as they both walked towards his car.
Zach picked up his briefcase and file, before opening the door to the office. He stepped outside into the evening air. It was still quite a warm day. He checked the time.
Cornelia should be at her apartment right now...I'll just go and see how she is.
He strode confidently across a few blocks, and shortly after, arrived at the corner of her apartment block. His gaze landed on the black vehicle slowing down to a stop just outside the building. He continued walking, but froze once his attention caught onto the blonde woman stepping out of the vehicle and smiling at the person inside. She waved at the man and rushed inside.
Zach frowned slightly as the man watched her leave, before he drove away. His expression stayed the same as he suddenly turned back around, and walked to his apartment instead.
A/N: Ah...I guess this apology won't make up for the lack of updates. Sorry! I just had 2 real exams a few days ago, and 2 more left, next week. After that, I should update more, hopefully.
My other story "Forbidden" will be most likely deleted, but I will re-post it and edit a lot of things that need changing. I have it all planned out, which I don't really do often, and so all I need to really do is just make the plan into real chapters.
Thank you all for the lovely reviews. I appreciate them so much. Sorry again for the really slow update.
