Chapter 14: Public Splash
The large group arrived in the public portkey area of Diagon Alley branch of Gringotts causing the patrons of the very full bank to take notice. The richly dressed beautiful people soon had tongues wagging even faster when armed goblin guards escorted Ragnok to the group who personally greeted them.
"Major Jasper Whitlock, Lady Alice Whitlock," Ragnok greeted with a polite bow and a friendly smile. He turned his attention to the others. "Lord Collin Whitlock, Dowager Whitlock, Mr. and Mrs. Whitlock, Misters Cullen, Madams Cullen, we are so happy and honored to have you all here today." Ragnok then looked to the toddler who with his thumb firmly in his mouth hid his face in his great aunt's neck. "How is the little lordling today?"
Alice giggled a little as she took the child from the elder woman. "Not liking portkey travel at the moment," she answered.
Ragnok lead the group to one of the back hallways leaving the lobby of the bank gossiping about the beautiful people who the goblins held in such high regard.
"Was all of that really necessary?" Edward asked as they moved out of hearing range.
"Yes," Ragnok answered. "In Wizarding Society perception is everything. Tonight people will talk about what happened in the lobby, coming to all sorts of conclusions. Tonight I have a meeting with the editor of the Daily Profit announcing the Pubic reading of the Potter Will, which will happen tomorrow at three in the afternoon in the morning edition. I will invite them to the reading, of course. The day after tomorrow we file formal charges at the Wizamgot on behalf of Harrison James Whitlock formerly Potter. At that time we will announce that you are no longer under Ministry jurisdiction as a financial ward of the Goblins, and the fact that his new parents have duel citizenship of Ireland and America."
"It sounds horribly exhausting." Rosalie chirped in. "I will never have the patience for dancing in the political arena."
"I gets even more complicated, Mrs. Cullen." Collin Whitlock said. "If my research is correct then Harry here has four seats on the Wizamgot, and one seat at the International Confederation of Wizards, and a seat on the Board of Governors of Hogwarts. Someone will have to manage those, and it has to be a British citizen."
Ragnok continued leading the group further into the deep underneath the bank and nodded in agreement. "I have contacted the House of Longbottom who have been allies with House of Potter since its creation. As long as there has been a Potter, there has been a Longbottom by his side. There is no current Lord as Franklin Longbottom and his wife Alice were tortured to the point of insanity, but Dowager Longbottom is handling things as well as raising young Neville. She is a supporter of the Old Ways and will honor the families' allegiance. I pity anyone who decided to go against her. The woman could flay a wildcat before it had time to extend its claws." A visible shiver ran over the goblin's skin. The woman had a habit of making him feel like a no-nothing youngling. "I would not want to be n the receiving end of her wand or tongue."
"Will we be meeting her soon?" Alice asked.
"Yes, tomorrow before the public reading of the Will. I have set aside a conference room for you to meet." Ragnok said as he led them to the end of a hallway to a wide ornate gold door. "There are few things that need to be finished that will take just a moment. If you would all wait in my office," he stated as he opened the door. "Major Whitlock, Lord Whitlock, Mr. Whitlock if you would come with me there is someone who wishes to speak with you before meeting with the others."
The men kissed here respective wives on the cheek, and followed the ancient goblin into another room where someone was sitting with his back to the door. Two cloaked figures were standing in strategic places in the room, ready to act in defense of the man in a moment.
"I felt it would be better to meet with the Volturi representative before things get started." Ragnok told him as the man stood and turned around.
"Hello, little brother." Marcus said as he faced them.
Carlisle smiled. He wonder who the brothers would send, and was happy with the choice. Jasper cast a cautious eye towards the man Carlisle was embracing. He understood that the whole thing with Renesme was a misunderstanding as well as an opportunity Aro couldn't pass up. Luckily there was no loss of life and diplomacy won out, as soon as evidence was presented. Still he did not feel completely comfortable with the brothers.
"Major Whitlock, Captain Whitlock" Marcus addressed them. "I am happy to avoid any new misunderstandings, by being informed of things before the rumor mill got started." Marcus could feel their apprehension in the air. The tension was thick and suffocating. "From what I have been told that the man who has been trying to recruit us for his war was destroyed by your new ward, correct?"
"That is correct," Jasper answered with a curt nod.
"Good. He tried on many occasions to shower us with false promises. We didn't need Maggie to see through the deceptions. We have treaties with both the ICW and the Goblins. Joining either side of the war would have compromised us on both those fronts. As part of our treaty to the Goblins and out of love from my, little brother," Marcus ruffled Carlisle's hair. "The Volturi Kings offer the Cullen and Whitlocks clans our protection. In a week we will gather the covens to make his a public decree. Anyone trying to harm you and yours will be taken as a direct attack on us."
Carlisle choked with emotion managed a weak but sincere "Thank you, Marcus."
"Yes, thank you, Marcus. We really appreciate it." Jasper said.
"Let's go join the others," Ragnok stated as a pregnant pause had invaded the room. "We should get things started. The room cleared as they went to join the others.
