Standard Disclaimers: All Highlander characters belong to Davis-Panzer, Gaumont and any subsequent companies acquiring the rights. I own none, but am just playing nicely. I do not own "All Souls Night" either. This belongs to Loreena McKennit and her record company. Again I borrowed and hope nobody will be offended that I have done so.

The stone floor feels cold beneath me. I kneel here head bowed in remembrance. On this night, the Feast of All Souls, a time to commemorate his life and passing. A time to remember them all. Their names are many, but no loss felt as keenly as his.

The Mass being said by the priest is but a murmur, a faint droning buzz in the background. Somewhere in a hidden memory, images float before my eyes. I see us as we once were, brothers together, side by side. Facing troubles and challenges, winning and losing, and dancing until the next sunrise. The future so distant and endless, stretching out before us. Never knowing what it held but ready to leap forward and seize it. The whole world was ours for the taking.

But no more. A life extinguished, snuffed out like one of the candles on the rail in the nave. Everything gone in a heartbeat. Tears prick the back of my eyes as I look up, and I see the candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing a waltz on All Souls Night.

Here in the church I am surrounded by people paying their respects to those departed, dear ones, family, friends and acquaintances. All hoping and praying for their salvation, for peace now they have gone. Love, and sorrow, and hope; a trinity all of their own, a trinity we all share, our prayers together full of a thousand voices, all longing for the same.

Can there be any hope for us? Will salvation come? I do not know.

Tonight is All Souls Night, a night of remembrance and prayer. I can hope. With his loss, it is all I have.

Loreena McKennitt – "All Souls Night"

Bonfire dot the rolling hillsides
Figures dance around and around
To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness
Moving to the pagan sound.
Somewhere in a hidden memory
Images float before my eyes
Of fragrant nights of straw and of bonfires
And dancing till the next sunrise.
I can see the lights in the distance
Trembling in the dark cloak of night
Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing
A waltz on All Souls Night.
Figures of cornstalks bend in the shadows
Held up tall as the flames leap high
The green knight holds the holly bush
To mark where the old year passes by.
Bonfires dot the rolling hillsides
Figures dance around and around
To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness
Moving to the pagan sound.
Standing on the bridge that crosses
The river that goes out to the sea
The wind is full of a thousand voices
They pass by the bridge and me.
