In This Together
By – Hime no Ichigo

Genre: General
Rating: G
Characters: HYUUGA Junpei
Story Type: Drabble
Summary: Basketball is a teamwork sport for a reason.

Disclaimer: Kuroko no Basuke is the intellectual property of Fujimaki Tadatoshi.

Notes: This is from this week's theme: "pick a song from GRANRODEO". Predictably, I picked "CAN DO" haha. Takes place before the successful recruitment of first years.

Hyuuga hates to admit it, but their team lacks power and the drive to see through the championships. It's not like they're bad at basketball – if anything, they work harder than anyone else, under Riko's supervision and torturous workout routines. Yet as captain, as the supporting pillar of the team when things aren't sunny, he's still not capable enough.

He shoots another three-pointer, the ball going through the hoop almost effortlessly. It's the only redeeming feature of his, being able to score on the outside with more points when the going gets tough. But that's it; that's all he's good for. To this day, he still doesn't understand why Teppei stepped down from the position when he's the most appropriate player as captain.

Oddly though, no one else seems to question his abilities. No one blames him for lost matches, no one begrudges him for a failed rebound, no one holds him responsible for a slip of his fingers. The pats on his back after each shot feel heavier and heavier, as the point differences grow despairingly larger. Why are they accepting it so easily? Is it because he's not firm enough on their team resolutions? That he appears weak?

No, Seirin isn't like that, at least not when Teppei left it in his hands.

He can do better.

They can do better.

Riko's sharp voice echoes in the gymnasium, snapping him out of his thoughts of incompetence.

"If you're having second thoughts about the championships, then get out of here. I don't need that on my team."

Tough as always, Riko is, but it's all he needs to bring back a determined smile to his face.

"Who says anything about quitting? I've only just started."
