Title: Eyes of Silence

Word Count: 419

Summary: Life seemed so very short and so very long

Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither

Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,

Looking into the heart of light, the silence.

Wasteland of Time, TS Eliot

At the sight of Voldemort, Lily dropped her son into the crib behind her and threw her arms wide, as if this would help, as if in shielding him from sight she hoped to be chosen instead. Fear was growing, and such a toxin flowing in her veins. Nothing could stop the tears flowing down her face, or the pain that she now felt of James' death and Peter's betrayal.

It was often said that one saw their life flash before their eyes in such an event like this, but Lily could only see fragments and catch partial phrases from memory. She choked on hysterical sobs when the Dark Lord Voldemort looked as though he may laugh at the scene.

Will you marry me?

"Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!"

Lord Voldemort looked almost amused at the idea. "Stand aside, you silly girl . . . stand aside, now."

"Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead —"

I love you, Lily…

"This is my last warning —"

Our son looks so beautiful…

"Not Harry! Please . . . have mercy . . . have mercy. . . . Not Harry! Not Harry! Please — I'll do anything —"

Harry has your eyes…

"Stand aside. Stand aside, girl!"

Lily stood there with tears flowing down her face. She was going to die tonight, right there she knew. Her son was going to become an orphan and victim to a prophecy. She closed her eyes and her mind went back to a happier time—anywhere but here with death in an innocent's room.

Lily could almost fool herself thinking that she was at St Mungo's and holding a newborn Harry in her arms. James kissed his son's forehead, his glasses grazing the top of the baby's head. He looked over at her, so proud of them both and so tired. They held each other's hand and watched their precious son sleep soundly.

Harry's going to do such great things one day. I just know it.

There was a bright green light, and everything went dark.
