Portland, Maine was the city where I was born and raised. It might seem like a normal American city but looks can be very deceiving. Two years ago, Portland was the epicenter of an outbreak of the Rosalia Virus. The Rosalia Virus is a virus that causes severe hemorrhaging all over the human body. Apparently, the virus was spread by the Monarch Butterflies through their wing scales. Most of the city was quarantined and a team of Resurgam doctors were determined to develop an antiserum. Naomi Kimishima was a member of this team and an instrumental part in the development of the antiserum. The antiserum was a godsend since it totally stopped the spread of the virus in the body. The Maine National Guard distributed the antiserum to every hospital and the threat of Rosalia was diminished. Afterwards, Naomi Kimishima became my guardian after my parents' death. I then learned about my parent's death from her when I was 10 years old. Learning about my parents' death had ignited a spark within me.

"Ahh, Naomi. Can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead, Alyssa."
"What happened to my real parents?"
Naomi was taken slightly aback by my question about my birth parents.
I noticed the hesitation in Naomi's voice so I walked up to her and hugged her tightly.
"That is okay, Naomi. You can tell me."
Naomi let out a long sigh and then cleared her throat.
"Alyssa. Do you remember your stay at Resurgam First Care?"
"Yes, I was all bandaged up."
"You were badly hurt by a bomb blast." Naomi continued
"Did my parents make it, Naomi?" I asked without even thinking
"I am sorry, Alyssa. But, your parents didn't make it." Naomi revealed after 15 minutes.
Grief overcame me at that moment. Tears started running down my face. Naomi embraced me and I let my tears run out. This is the first time I ever cried so hard in my entire life.
"Alyssa. I am here for you." Naomi said as she embraced me and tried to comfort me.
It was that moment of crying in Naomi's arms where the "spark" was ignited. I wanted to make sure people didn't go through what I had gone through. I decided that day that I would become a surgeon and promised myself that I would become one no matter what it took.
