Chapter 20: My Heart Will Go On

Angel collapsed, laying Buffy on the ground.

The dark energy inside was consuming its way to her heart. Already her body was dead and in just minutes she would be, too.

He held her dead body in his arms, still unwilling to let go for the world.

She tried to cling to him in response but could barely move anything but her head, lungs, and half-beating heart.

Dawn instantly caught sight of her sister's condition. She fell against Connor. "We have to do something."

"How?" Connor asked.

Dawn then thought of something. If the Key magic resting inside her unusable for years had truly made her a mutated Seer, and if her Seer powers truly strengthened against whole elements when she was spurned so greatly… "…hit me."

Connor looked at her in shock.

But she knew what she had to do now. "Hit me!"

Connor suddenly slapped her.

She recoiled in shock. Then looked at him, her hands lit with flames of white and her eyes sparking of the same crystal color. "You should run."

Connor raced over to Angela, giving Dawn the space she needed.

As the Shadows began an attack again, she let loose. The white fire of her power surged against them and created the light they couldn't battle.

Summer, even as she collapsed on the battlefield, found herself flashing back to Sharusa. She knew these Shadows. They came from that land so much as the Darkness did. She had been facing them all but the first month of her life. She had basically been raised by demons. She had breathed this dark magic as long as she lived inside it. It had shaped her, formed her, made her the violent child of the wilds that she was today.

This was how she would know how to defeat the Darkness and its Shadows and any demonic threat she would face from that day forward. She had been fighting them for as long as she could remember, her demonic blood forged of the same magic. These horrible, deadly painful memories would be the very thing to save her life and the world she was born in.

Her mother's fire would extinguish the Shadows.

There was the Darkness, forming itself into a void that would unseal the Hell-Mouth.

Now was her chance.

Summer got up and rushed into it. She raced to the Darkness and put all her knowledge to use. One attack and the ritual was interrupted.

The Darkness simply smirked. "You fight for nothing. Your blood is all I need to open this gate."

Summer smirked back. "Come and get it."

The fight was on.

The Darkness made its move…

…and suddenly froze in front of her.

Summer held up a knife, doused in Dawn's white flames. "You made this happen. My turn now." She then whistled.

Dawn got the message and sent the last of the fire-shards to her daughter.

Summer ducked right as it drew close enough.

They all hit the Darkness.

Letting Summer's final swipe of her blade ignite it.

The ritual energy collided. Dark Magic met White Magic and exploded into the air.

The Darkness was dead.

The magic swept along the battlefield, destroying the Shadows.

It knocked the Slayers and Slayer-trainers off their feet, and Harmony onto Gunn.

Angel held Buffy close, keeping her from further harm.

But as the magic burst faded, things changed…

Buffy was suddenly gasping for breath. She looked at Angel.

She was alive.

Angela simply needed to look at the others to know something was wrong. "…what just happened?"

Evelyn had the same reaction. "Everyone is…charmed."

Gunn then noticed a disappearance. "And where did Harmony go?"

"I think she went that way," a young Slayer said, pointing westward. Then thought that over. "…or…that way…" she added meekly, pointing down at the ground.

Willow went over to Angela and Evelyn. "What do you mean everyone's charmed?"

"I think I know what happened," Wesley said, "When the Darkness died, the explosion following was the released magic energy. Since it couldn't retreat into a closed Hell-Mouth, it went to the next closest source that could hold it. It penetrated our mental link and gave everyone in it eternal youth. For those who already had it, eternal souls."

Angel helped Buffy up. "Do you know what that means?"

Buffy smiled. "What was that you were saying about nothing coming from this relationship?"

(Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" plays in background)

Angel smirked. "Take that, destiny." And kissed her.

"Oh, get a room!" Xander groaned.

The battle was swift but fierce. And it forever changed everything.

Every night in my dreams

I see you

I feel you

That is how I know you

Go on

Summer was part of a family. The effects Sharusa had had on her would never be altered, but they would always be the thing to save her life.

Far across the distance

And spaces

Between us

You have come to show you

Go on

Dawn's unsettling powers seemed to stay inside. They settled around her heart, only to rise when it pounded furiously again. Needless to say, she and Connor had a lot more in common now. But they were in love now, more than ever before.

Wherever you are

I believe that the heart does

Go on

Spike did convince Willow to figure something out for Drusilla. She agreed that if she could manage a containment of some kind, it would be no problem to turn Drusilla around and make her Spike's one love again, this time complete with a soul to match his.

You open the door

And you're here in my heart and

My heart will

Go on and on

Fred and Wesley's daughter, Irene, was born not long after. They couldn't be happier.

Love can touch us one time

And last for a lifetime

And never let go till

We're gone

Harmony didn't show up again. But, hey, she was Harmony, so there was no telling with her.

Love was when I loved you

One true time

I hold to

In my life, we'll always

Go on

The team continued work on the STP, well as always, ready for whatever apocalyptic hazard came along. They'd face it like always. As a team.

And, in a way, a family.

Wherever you are

I believe that the heart does

Go on

You open the door

And you're here in my heart and

My heart will

Go on and on

You're here

There's nothing I fear

And I know that my heart will

Go on

We'll stay

Forever this way

You are safe in my heart and

My heart will

Go on and on

That night, Angela lay asleep in bed.

In her dreams, she danced in the arms of her own true love, the one her heart would always hold onto: Thomas.

She smiled in her sleep. In her dreams, they would always go on.

WOOHOO! I finally finished it! Sorry I sort of rushed the ending there, but I still said what I needed to say and I couldn't exactly sum it up any other way without dragging it on...especially since I was half-blocked on it. Anyway, the next one is basically finished so I'll start posting tomorrow. Thanks for reading and see you then...
