At long last, here is the newest chapter of Professor Shorty!
It isn't nearly as long as I hoped, but I felt that I had achieved all that I wanted to for this chapter sooo... yeah.
As always, I hope you enjoy and all corrections and/or advice is always welcome!
Chapter 12: DA
After the camping trip, the prospective members of Dumbledore's Army had a meeting in Ed's classroom. They planned a special Alchemy lesson for the students that was scheduled to be few days later. Everyone who went on the camping trip had passed all the exams (thanks to Harry) and now they were free to practice Alchemy (only under Ed's supervision). No one dropped out of the class. Perhaps it was their interest in learning to fight in some other form of magic, or perhaps it was Ed's underestimation of their abilities that pushed them to prove him wrong. Either way, the students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were well on their way to becoming not only top-notch wizards, but alchemists as well.
Ed walked briskly down the Hogwarts corridors, map in hand. The students crowding the halls parted when they saw that blond piece of hair that sticks up like an antenna. Those who weren't in his class had heard rumors about the popular professor.
"I heard he attacked one of his students and they had to be taken to the hospital wing!" said an excited second year Hufflepuff.
"N-no way!" Her first year Gryffindor brother gasped.
"It's true! He also picked a fight with Professor Snape, my friend's friend saw it with her own eyes!" Her friend whispered. Ed paid them no mind, for he was on a mission. He turned into a much less populated corridor and continued his journey. Not five minutes later, he stopped abruptly.
"According to this map it should be around here..." He muttered to himself. He looked around and frowned at the map. He then noticed a little message scrawled in the corner. Pace back and forth in front of the tapestry three times, while wishing to find us.
"What the hell?" He cursed. By now, however, he had learned to put up with all this crazy wizard nonsense. He began to pace. Um, ok. I suuuuure wish that I could find that stupid Harry Potter right about now, along with all the other students... As soon as he finished that thought, a large door appeared to his right.
"Well, that's convenient." He remarked and shoved open the door to reveal a large open room packed full of students. At the sound of the door they all stopped what they were doing and turned to face him. Harry stepped forward.
"Thanks for coming professor. We all really appreciate it." The class murmured their agreement and formed a circle around Ed, who cleared his throat.
"Now, one of the things that makes an alchemist powerful is that they all have their own style. The Amestrian State Military recognizes this, and bestows a second name upon each State Alchemist," The class nodded that they understood, and Ed continued. "My superior, Colonel Roy Mustang specializes in fire alchemy, and they call him the Flame Alchemist. It is not uncommon for an alchemist to have a transmutation circle tattooed on their bodies, to make it easier in combat." Ed took out a piece of chalk and drew the transmutation circle that Roy wears on his gloves.
"This is the transmutation circle that Colonel Mustang uses. He owns several pairs of gloves that bear this mark." He clapped his palms together and slammed them on the circle, a large burst of fire shot out and spun around the room before disappearing into thin air. The class oohed and aahed while applauding, much to Ed's ego. Ed reached into his pocket and pulled out his pocket watch to check the time.
"Alright, we've only got about 30 minutes before we should leave for dinner," Ed gestured to a conveniently placed stack of wooden blocks and chalk. "Practice with the blocks for the remainder of the time." The class groaned collectively.
"But Professor, shouldn't we learn more advanced alchemy? How is whittling going to be helpful in battle?" A student called out. Ed prepared to chew the kid out, but was stopped by Harry.
"Do as Professor Elric says." He said sternly. The student that had called out shifted uncomfortably before muttering an apology. The students fetched their blocks and proceeded to do as Ed instructed. They practice the three steps of transmutation while Ed slowly walked around, directing them as he saw fit. Ed whipped out his pocket watch and sighed.
"Alright, we had better end this session now. Your homework is to think about some styles of alchemy that you might be interested in." The class nodded in unison and one by one they filed out of the Room of Requirement while Ed kept an eye out for Filch.
Now back in his office, Ed plopped down in his chair with a sigh. He slid open a drawer in his desk and took out his unfinished letter to his brother.
Are you doing well? I'm finally starting to adjust to life here. This magic stuff is pretty bizarre, but I think I've got a grasp on it. When I come home I'll teach some to you, okay? I miss y
Ed hesitate and a large drop of ink fell on the paper, blotting out most of the words. Ed sighed and crumpled the paper before throwing it back into his drawer. With a check of his watch, he decided it was time to go to dinner.
The Golden Trio sat in the Gryffindor Common Room along with other members of the DA.
"What style do you think you want to learn?" Ron asked Harry. "I mean, what are you interested in?" Harry shrugged.
"I'm not really sure. I mean, I don't know enough about Alchemy to know what would be good..." He sighed. "What about you, Ron?" Ron's eyes shone.
"I want to learn how to make the fire that Elric did! It looked so cool! I want to be able to do awesome stuff like that!" Ron said excitedly. Hermione looked at him doubtfully.
"Do you really think you can pull that off? I mean... he said his Colonel uses that transmutation circle. It seems a little... difficult." She said. Ron frowned.
"So what? I can try, can't I? What about you, then? What will you do?"
"W-well, I haven't entirely decided yet..." She admitted, directing her gaze towards Neville Longbottom.
"What about you, Neville?" She asked and all eyes directed towards him and he fidgeted uncomfortably.
"W-well... I like plants, so I was thinking I could try something along that line..." He admitted shyly. Hermione seemed shocked that Neville of all people had come up with an idea before she had. Harry, however, smiled.
"Good for you Neville, Ron. I'm sure you can do it," He encouraged them before addressing the group. "We all can, if we just try our best and listen to Elric." The group of students wooped and cheered to show their support for not only Ed, but Harry as well.
Again, I apologize for the shortness. I really wanted to come back with a longer chapter, but they wasn't anything else that would fit in here so please forgive me Dx
I'm not sure when the next chapter will be up, but I can certainly tell you that it won't take as long as this one :)
