Okay, I've had this chapter mostly-written for an embarrassingly long time. Sorry for the wait.
The song title is one of my favorites of all time and its by The Walkmen... but if you're doing music while you read, you should play "Your Hand in Mine" by Explosions in the Sky during their date for... reasons. You guys are the best. So many 'thank yous' for reading and sticking with me for this fic!
Emily got to her morning class on Thursday. She pulled out her book and noticed a note wedged inside the cover. She easily recognized Paige's sloppy handwriting.
Will you go on a date with me Friday night? Yes No Maybe
Emily smiled at the cliché. She pulled out her phone to shoot a quick "Yes :D" to Paige.
Pick you up at 7? Paige replied. This, too, made Emily smile like a total goober. Emily shrugged it off, texting a "Sure" and getting lost thinking about the outfit she'd wear.
Paige didn't mention the date again until the next day, when they were parting ways, "See you at seven?" Paige confirmed.
Emily looked worried for a second, "What should I wear?" she asked.
Paige thought about it, "Date attire," she answered with a smile before leaving. Paige was pleased with herself for the restraint. She was finally learning when to exit and leave 'em wanting more. Emily was less charmed than baffled by the annoyingly vague answer.
After classes, Paige made her way to Pru's car.
Pru and Paige didn't have to drive long before Paige found the place. They parked the car off in front of the clearing and began unloading. "This is it," Paige said, breathing in the crisp air. The smell of spring was filtering through and the feeling of making it through the winter, coming out of the darkness alive and in love, made Paige feel invincible. She grabbed the step ladder and hustled to the middle of the clearing. Pru sighed and grabbed the large cardboard box filled with string lights.
"So, we're just going to start here, and work our way around," Paige explained, climbing up to a tree on one edge. Pru went over to help, shaking out the tangled mess.
"It's pretty out here, right?" Paige looked over, eager. The outdoors suited Paige in a way that Pru never quite understood. "It's very..."
"Remote?" Pru filled in, "rustic?" She meant to tease, but Paige's excitement fell. She seemed disappointed that Pru had noticed. "I didn't mean it like that..."
"No, you did. It's okay. It is isolated," Paige nodded, accepting her fate as some lame creep who couldn't take a beautiful girl on real dates.
"Emily will like it. Paige, if someone put this kind of effort in for me... I'd be completely-"
"Annoyed?" Paige pinned the light she was working on and plopped herself down on the dewy grass. "I've been running. And I thought I was making progress. But I just went in a circle," Paige sighed, thinking about her 'coming out' arc.
"I'd be smitten," Pru responded, reassuring. "Seriously, we've both come a long way, you and I. None of that circle nonsense. Plus, Emily, likely the hottest girl in school, or at least in our class, wants you. And she doesn't care about the other crap." Pru walked over to the girl, "C'mon, how cool is that?" She asked with a shoulder nudge.
Paige shrugged, trying to shake off the feeling that Emily, of all people, deserved something, someone better. "This spot too simple, I should have picked an impressive place," Paige responded, altering the course of their conversation to something more manageable. She wanted to keep the 'spring and invincibility' feeling for just a little longer. "We should climb something and watch the sunset over a majestic, memorable view," she said, gesturing like a movie director.
Pru rolled her eyes, they were already most of the way done, "Dude, no one ever wants to climb things with you."
"Emily does!" Paige finally smirked, Yeah, it is pretty cool.
"Has she expressed interest in any view other than your hot, naked bod?" Pru smiled suggestively.
"Uh," Paige blushed, not knowing how to respond.
"That's what this is, right? Grand romantic gesture? I think it will work..." Pru smirked.
Paige's eyes fell again, "Crap! Does this seem like a seduction in the woods? She's going to think she's getting murdered!" Paige looked to see Pru's reaction.
"UGH! That is NOT what I said!" Pru exclaimed, exasperated. Paige finally chuckled, having annoyed Pru to a satisfactory degree.
They finished up, and Paige laid down a blanket. She picked up her phone to give Shana the details of their location. It took Shana about fifteen minutes to get there.
"Hate to break it to you, kid, but my phone says that it's going to rain..." Shana flipped through an app on her smartphone.
"Bah," Paige responded, "You know what they say about forecasting... it's just fancy-talk for guessing," Paige stated, snotty.
And Stanford is just fancy vocational training for babysitters, Shana thought. "First of all, nobody says that. Second, your logic is totally flawed. A great deal of capital goes into forecasting, which, yes is informed guessing, as you put it. It is incredibly valuable in..." Shana could tell that Paige wasn't listening, the girl was now loading Pru's stereo with an Explosions in the Sky CD. "Whatever," Shana huffed.
"Huh?" Paige responded, pleased with herself for the music selection.
"Fourthly, you're a pain in the ass," Shana stared at her pointedly, with a small smirk.
Paige felt a shiver under the look and for a second she was sure Shana was flirting. Paige shook it off.
When Paige arrived at her dorm room five minutes before seven, she was feeling very confident about her looks. She'd been storing away clothing items at Pru's for a good week in anticipation and, along with Pru's new wardrobe budget from Paige's dad, her "look" was coming together. For this date, she was wearing a vest over a v-neck. She had new black jeans and her hair was (an elaborately constructed) casual messy ponytail. Paige knocked.
Paige had only known Emily in swim gear, jeans or sweats. Paige hadn't spent a second today thinking about what Emily might wear on a date.
Music playing in the room stopped and Paige heard Emily shuffle around for a second before opening the door. "Hey," Emily said, looking over Paige and smiling.
Paige's brain shorted out at the sight of Emily in a very skimpy blue dress. "Uhh..."
"You look nice, Paige," Emily said.
"Um, uh, you. Yeah," Paige continued stammering. Emily was gorgeous. Like, movie star, drop dead, totally unapproachable levels of beauty. Paige had spent all of high school avoiding girls that stunning. But... Paige looked up, seeing a warm smile on Emily's lips, her eyebrows cocking in a challenge. But, it was still Emily Fields. The girl she loved. "Just... wow," Paige finally said.
Emily had half a mind to pull Paige into the room, slam the door shut and throw herself at the girl. She imagined what it would be like to have Paige undress her against the door. If this was how Paige was reacting to the dress, Emily desperately wanted to see the effect of the lingerie she'd worn. Emily took a deep breath to steady herself.
"Shall we go, Fields?" Paige asked with a smirk.
I'd go anywhere with you, Emily thought, her nervousness building. She simply nodded.
"Good, because this is an officially sanctioned outing, which is the most romantic kind," Paige made a self deprecating joke, grabbing Emily's hand and planting soft kiss in her palm.
When they walked out of the dorm, Paige felt a couple drops of rain. It'll pass, she thought, confidently.
Paige had borrowed Pru's car after Pru convinced her that no, even Emily wouldn't want to ride on the back of her bike at night. They drove off campus. Paige had practiced in her head three times so that she wouldn't miss a turn.
"No no no," Paige muttered, sighing as it started raining even harder. "No," she hit the steering wheel for good measure. Paige's heart sank as she put the wipers on high. "This is not so good," she explained to Emily, with a sad smile. Emily rested a hand on Paige's arm, to reassure her.
"I'm sure it's fine, Paige," Emily replied, feeling a little silly saying that when she had no idea where they were going. Emily rested a hand on her leg, to reassure the girl, who was focused on driving and biting her lip with worry. They turned off onto a side road that Emily didn't recognize.
Storm clouds covered the sun like black out curtains, and it only served to upset Paige more. "I swear, like an hour ago it was perfect out," Paige muttered mostly to herself. Huge gobs of Rain were pelting the windshield when Paige made the final turn.
Paige powered down the engine and dimmed the headlights when they arrived. "Well, here it is." She looked over at Emily, apologetically cringing, "We were supposed to have a picnic," she explained.
Emily squinted out the window. String lights hung from the trees surrounding a clearing. And sure enough, in the middle of it all was a soaked red and white blanket, a soggy basket and a bottle of wine that had fallen to its side. "So it would seem," Emily smiled at Paige. The girl was looking down at her hands, and Emily leaned over to kissed her on the cheek. "It really is quite beautiful, Paige."
Paige sighed, "And quite damp."
Emily laughed, "Yeah. Well, I won't go thirsty, that's for sure."
"Okay, well, how about I go grab our food and the bottle of wine and we can go somewhere else" Paige responded after a short silence.
"Sounds like a good idea. Are the lights...?"
"They're outdoor lights," Paige chewed her lip a bit, contemplating, "I'm not going to risk it." Emily nodded.
"I should go, though," Emily pleaded, "or at least come with you." Emily reached out to hold Paige's hand.
"No. No use in us both getting wet. Plus, you look so nice in that dress," Paige looked over Emily and smirked, bringing their interlocked fingers up to her lips to kiss Emily's hand. Emily had to look away, warming to Paige's attention, a small smile playing on her lips.
"Okay, come back soon-" Emily started, wanting to hold tighter to Paige's hand, but it was gone. Paige had already opened the door and bolted out. Emily felt cool air blow a few drops of rain onto her exposed arms. She noticed that in the three seconds it had taken for Paige to get out of the car, the inside of the door was already covered in rain.
Emily was antsy, so she started tinkering with the console, increasing the heat a bit and turning on the windshield wipers when her view of Paige was obscured by rain. She turned on the radio. It took Emily a few beats to recognize the album. Emily took a deep breath and smiled as she watched Paige run around in the rain, lights catching the suspended raindrops in her hair. She laughed as the girl stomped clumsily through a puddle of water.
Paige was only half way to their picnic and she was already soaked. Her Converse were achieving a glorious state of uncomfortably mushiness. She got to the clearing and grabbed the picnic basket by the handle, tucking the bottle of wine under one arm and the cups under the other. She reached her free hand for the blanket and it practically sloshed under her fingers. Ick, she decided to ditch it. She'd just have to come back when it stopped raining and hang it to dry.
Paige took a second to observe her botched date, spinning around the clearing, letting the rain hit her as she chuckled at her bad luck. She jumped, startled by a half honk from the car. She saw Emily flash the lights on and off, motioning her to get the hell back there. Paige beamed at her girlfriend and ran back, trying her best to dodge the really nasty puddles. She disposed of the picnic in the trunk and then got back into the drivers seat, shivering.
Paige had barely closed the door when Emily grabbed her by the sleeves of her jacket into a deep, warming kiss. Paige returned it enthusiastically, letting her wet fingers get tangled in Emily's dark hair, pulling her closer for a few moments before stopping to catch her breath, "Em," Paige whispered as Emily moved to taste the rain on her cheek, letting her teeth graze the edge of Paige's jaw. "I'm sopping wet. You'll get cold..." Paige could barely say with a sigh, as Emily made her way to Paige's neck. Paige ran her fingers down Emily's arms and then up past her shoulders to the top of Emily's neck, feeling the goose bumps form. Emily kissed her again, though and Paige sighed with relief, tasting the girl's mouth with her tongue
"Then you better get out of these wet clothes," Emily said in a timid whisper after a few minutes of making out.
Paige swallowed, suddenly she was that much more turned on. All that time she'd spent wanting Emily, all those sparks, had been gradually building up in clusters around her body. Emily nipped at her ear and Paige shivered from a place deep inside.
"You want to help me out?" Paige replied, pecking Emily's lips as she took off her jacket and raised her arms. Emily bunched up Paige's wet shirt lifted it over the other girl's head. She tossed it over the back seat into the truck.
Emily let her eyes wander over Paige in just her blue bra. She trailed her fingertips up Paige's toned sides and watched her shiver at the contact. Paige was shaking. She took her wet hair out of its ponytail squeezing out most of the water and tousling it dry before moving her eyes back to Emily. The girl was staring at her and biting her lip. It made Paige crazy to think that Emily wanted her. "Back seat?" Paige asked, a smile tugging at her lips.
"Yeah, backseat," Emily agreed, making her way over the console. Paige stayed up front, taking off her wet shoes. Paige managed to free herself from both converse when she felt a breeze and watched something whizz past her head. Paige was baffled by the thing on the dashboard for a few moments before realizing it was Emily's dress. Her heart skipped a couple beats before she realized she couldn't get to the back seat fast enough.
Emily was about to get settled when she was tackled by Paige, who had clumsily launched herself into the back. "Whoa," Emily laughed, as Paige recovered and adjusted them both so they were laying horizontally, moving seatbelts safely out of the way without ceasing her attack on Emily's neck. "Paige," Emily gasped, "Paige..."
"Pants," Emily rasped shivering. Paige looked down and sure enough Emily was covered in goosebumps again from Paige's soaked jeans. She sat up making quick work of the buttons, managing to pull them off with efficiency if not grace. She revealed her a pair of soft grey boyshorts. Emily bit her lip and looked over Paige, pleased, her eyes dark, before grabbing her by the back of her neck and pulling her back down to her lips.
Emily could feel Paige's bare legs between hers, her stomach flush against Emily. Paige's skin was perfectly soft and Emily did her best to warm the girl up, taking every opportunity to hold her tighter and push up into Paige. Emily was lost in Paige's skin, kisses and bites.
She felt her bra come loose without noticing Paige work on it. Paige propped herself up, as she removed Emily's black lacy garment with one hand. Emily watched nervously as Paige's expression changed and Paige's gaze dropped to her breasts. Paige ran a thumb over Emily's nipple before continuing touching and looking down Emily's body. Emily lifted herself up so that Paige could remove her underwear. Paige's heavy breath quickened, her whole body coursing with hunger for the naked girl under her. "Wow, Em," Paige breathed out, "you are just crazy amounts of beautiful."
Emily didn't know what to do other than put a hand over her face as she smiled up at Paige. This was it. This was what she'd been waiting for. Paige moved Emily's hand with a chuckle and then took of her own bra, and kicked off her underwear. Emily looked her over, licked her lips and muttered her first "Oh god, Paige," of the night. Paige lowered herself back to taking Emily's nipple with her tongue and between her teeth. "I want you so badly," Emily gasped, wrapping her legs around Paige so her wetness was flush against the other girl. Emily had never been so turned on in her life. She had never wanted anything as much as she wanted Paige. She could feel Paige smile as she made her way back up to Emily's neck with bites and kisses, one hand teasing her hipbone and reaching around to grab Emily's ass as the other grazed the tips of her fingertips from Emily's wetness to just brushing against clit and back again.
Emily gasped and grabbed harder onto Paige. She couldn't help the noises she was making as Paige teased her. The entirety of her experience was warmth and want. She couldn't believe how good Paige felt pressed against her completely, she needed more of Paige. She needed just one more thing. Emily locked lips with Paige, guiding the girl's fingers where she wanted them. Paige propped herself on an elbow to look Emily in the eyes as she moved her finger in circles along the opening. "Are you sure?" Paige asked. Emily furrowed her brows and nodded, unable to take it anymore. She wanted to feel Paige everywhere, as much as she could. She guided Paige's hand until the girl had a finger inside her. She felt perfect and loved and full and thought Finally, before letting Paige give her more.
Paige moved slowly, letting Emily lead their actions until she heard the most perfect moan leave her girlfriend's lips. That became her sole purpose in life and Paige held Emily in place and focused on finding it again and again, moving her thumb to Emily's clit and making it all the more intense. "Mmm, lover," Emily moaned as she came.
Only then did Paige realize how hard she'd been moving herself against Emily. Paige felt a wave of warmth and pulled Emily close. The girl was breathing hard and shivering. Paige held her tight as she came down. Emily smiled at the her, trailing a finger on her cheek and pulling her in for a slow kiss. She let her hands wander over Paige, enjoying how the naked girl felt against her.
"Okay, well, now I'm hungry," Emily said after their brief nap. Paige laughed.
"The sandwiches were in ziplocks, they're probably still good," Paige said. She was already halfway over the back seat, digging through the basket. Emily reached up and pinched her butt, "Stop that, you!" Paige laughed before plopping down next to Emily, naked and bearing sandwiches. They cleaned themselves up with rainwater and Paige even had hand sanitizer.
"200 more of these and you've got yourself an engagement ring!" Emily mocked, as she opened the wet bag to receive a reasonably dry meal.
"Ugh, that story was so awful!" Paige replied, taking a bite of her food.
Now it was Emily's turn to wear a huge smile. She leaned over and kissed her girlfriend. "I like you so much," Emily admitted with a laugh.
"Baby, I know," Paige replied, cocky. She looked up at Emily, who was still completely serious. Paige had no fear or doubt about what she was about to say, "I love you, Emily."
Emily put down her food and scooted closer to Paige. She pushed strands of wet hair out of her girlfriend's face. "I love you too, Paige."
Paige and Emily fell asleep together in the backseat of the car, entangled and naked. They got dressed around dawn, laughing, joking and kissing. "I hope Pru won't notice how long it was gone," Emily said.
"Nah, she won't have a clue," Paige smirked, pulling into student parking. Paige exited the car and then practically sprinted to the other side so that she could open the door for Emily. Emily thanked her with a long, lingering kiss against the passenger side door... just a little taste of her plans for the rest of their Saturday morning.
Darren Wilden was on the crew team, and therefore quite accustomed to his pre-dawn jog. And boy, was he glad he brought his smart phone for this one. He'd tell you that his journalist-senses were tingling when a car pulled into long-term parking at 6AM. He immediately ducked behind a bush and slowed his breathing. And then... It was like Christmas!
