Set after 7.23

Summary: Some things you imagine as a child turn out to be completely different when you grow up.

Bedtime prayer: "Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. May angels watch me through the night and wake me with the morning light."

He lay there staring at the sulphur-coloured sky, their makeshift shelter slightly swaying in the everlasting onslaught of stale fetid air that roamed the vastness of Purgatory. It had been Castiel's idea to spend the dark hours on one of those huge crippled trees to keep the beasts at bay. He closed his eyes, imagining his mother tucking him under the blankets, whispering "sweet dreams my darling" and kissing his forehead.

He felt Cas stirring on his crow's nest on top of the tree and smiled, a tear rolling down his neck. She'd been right with the angel after all.
