A/N- Just John's reaction when he listened to Sam's message in "Faith".

Disclaimer- I don't own the Winchesters.

His phone rang. And like usual, he didn't answer. Yet he did look at the caller ID.

It was Sam.

It wasn't fair for him to ignore his boys, but it was for the best. It wasn't safe to talk to them. There were demons everywhere, and he couldn't expose his sons to them. He knew his boys were following him, he even told them to stop looking for him. But he knew that as stubborn as they were, they were still on his trail.

The ringing stopped. His phone said he had a voicemail. He hit play.

'Hey, Dad, it's Sam. Um, you're probably not gonna get this, but, uh, it's Dean. He's sick and, uh, the doctors say there's nothing they can do. Um, but, uh, they don't know the things we know, right? Um, so don't worry, 'cause I'm, uh, I'll do whatever it takes to get him better. Alright, Just wanted you to know.'

The message ended.

Dean dying? Sam sounded broken. I need to be there.

John stood up from his bed in the hotel he was currently staying in.

"No…" He whispered to himself.

If he went to see his sons, the demons would follow. There was no way he could expose his sons to them. Not right now.

He shoved the thoughts of his sons out of his mind and turned back to the rock salt rounds he had been working on.

It wasn't cruel to ignore his sons. It wasn't his choice.

It was simply tough love.
