Oz rubbed the towel over his head and stepped through the door into his bedroom. There were candles lit and a jazz album from his collection was playing. He felt half his mouth turn up. Buffy was curled up on the bed asleep, her damp hair still wrapped in a towel her body barely covered in a green satin nighty. He memorized the image, his mate exhausted in their bed. She was safe, and that was all that mattered. He took a deep breath, praying to any and all friendly powers that his life would be filled with these moments. He stepped to the bed and pulled a blanket over her lithe body. He stroked her cheek gently. She was his and he was wholly hers.
He backed away from the bed and decided to work off his excess energy setting their home to rights. The goo was gone thanks to some handy dandy magic that Tara and Anya had worked, but the furniture was pretty much done. Buffy had said she didn't care, but he knew she had loved her little nest. It was going to take some doing to replace all of their things. He grabbed the trash bags and started gathering up the splintered wood and other refuse.
He worked steadily and tossed bag after bag out the window and into the dumpster below. His eyes trailed around the room and he could find nothing else to toss because there was nothing left. He heard her quiet steps coming and dropped his head. She rested her hand on his shoulder and looked at the bare room.
"It'll be okay. We all made it and Xander didn't even have to stay the night in the hospital." She smiled at him. "When you came back, I knew I wanted to face these things with you by my side. Our lives will be complicated and there will be trials, but we'll make it despite my father's renewed interest in my life."
"You are too wonderful for me." He looked into her sparkling eyes and shrugged. "I just wish we didn't have to refeather the nest."
"Are you kidding? They'll all be back here tomorrow with things. It won't be what we lost, but it will be given to us in love. That's all that matters." She tilted her head and looked at him unblinkingly.
"You amaze me." He whispered.
"I'm gonna drive you crazy, and you'll love it." She cupped his cheek. The warmth of her hand soothed his jagged nerves. "We can replace the things, but it isn't what's in the building. You are always coming home to me and vice versa. We are home."
He gathered her into his arms and kissed her. The world disappeared and there was only her trembling body in his arms. He never let her lips rest as he plucked her from the ground and carried her to bed.
