I had passed through the golden portal as I died and landed on my knees in the vast field of flowers I know to be Summerland. I knew I had to cross the bridge and move on, but I couldn't help but see what I felt I had to see. So, I asked it.
What am I supposed to see? Where am I supposed to be?
And before I knew it I was being carried just by the wind to a row of pine trees. I heard a river pulsing and I went through the pine trees to see a pond at the bottom of a steep hill and an old park bench sitting in front of it. Sitting at that bench, was a girl with blonde hair. She was flawless. I walked over to see the one girl I had never expected to see.
"Ever?" I asked.
"I'm here to help you, Charlotte. After your untimely death, I was sent to see you through your transition, all right?" she replied.
I nodded and took her hand and she walked me down another hill and into a forest. We entered and walked down a path with trees shading us. We walked down to a river bank where a pavilion sat in the middle with several bridges over the rushing stream.
"Go inside, whatever you find in there, is yours," she said.
I walked across one of the creaky, old, bridges and into the old wooden pavilion. Moss grew over a few places inside. Sitting on one of the benches was an old leather bound notebook. I opened it up, and there scrawled across every page in my handwriting was my entire life story. From birth to death, all fifteen years worth of important moments were present and accounted for. I flipped through it and read every page. After a while I just sat in the pavilion smelling the thick, humid air. Just like how it felt back in North Carolina where I lived. I heard Ever coming back through the woods and watched until she came across the bridge and sat down right next to me.
"You okay?" she asked.
"I'm perfect thanks. Thank you for showing me this Ever, I really appreciate it," I said sincerely.
"I'm just doing what I felt had to be done. I'm glad you found everything okay. There's something else I want to show you," she said as she held out her hand.
I took her hand and I faded out, and I was suddenly in front of the shape shifting building which could only be the Great Halls of Learning. Damen was standing on the steps waiting.
"I expect my gorgeous Ever saw you to the woods already?" he asked.
"Good, now go inside the building and ask to see the stars," he said.
I nodded and hurried up the steps and walked in.
Show me the stars. I thought.
A large door opened up and beckoned me into a dark tunnel. I walked slowly forward and slowly, I could see a light, as I came closer, it became bright enough for me to squint. I finally reached the bright room. Surrounding the ceiling and walls were thousands of bright, illuminating stars. I smiled at the biggest and brightest one and made a silent wish. I sat down on the ground and gazed upon every star and taking in every moment of glory it held. I named the biggest brightest star "Ever" because she showed me the way. I finally took one last moment with the stars and clutched the notebook and left.
I found Damen waiting, and he led me to the bridge, where Ever was waiting. She gave me a hug.
"Never forget," she whispered.
She handed me a purple glass jar, containing that biggest, brightest star and she smiled.
"Thank you," I said through my joyous tears.
She smiled and I slowly crossed over…
