striking the heart
an above suspicion fanfiction
"Anna, I'm married with two kids. Whether or not I got into this for the wrong reasons, it's my life now. I am going to make it work, just as much as I want you to know how special you are. I want you to trust me and know that what I did at the promotion meeting was because I wanted you to succeed and I believe you will, given time."
"Can I go now?" She needed to be on her own.
He sighed, then cupped her face in his hands and kissed her, "Yes, you can go, sweeheart. No hard feelings?"
"No hard feelings. I really appreciate everything you've told me. You're right, I'm still young, there'll be another opportunity, I'll show them!"
Langton gave her a lopsided smile as she got out, and waved to her as the taxi drove off. Then he sat back, wishing he could light a cigarette because no matter what he had said, all he wanted to do was to stop the taxi, run back to her and kiss her again.
Anna represented youth and freshness and, besides her, he felt jaded and old, too cold to continue their relationship even when it had been a possibility. For once though, he told himself, he was behaving responsibly.
Until the next time, at least.
She ran herself a bath once she'd got home, James' words ringing in her ears. She could still taste the kiss on her lips, the gentle way he cupped her face and she sighed. Removing her clothing, she stepped into the bath and allowed the water to submerge her.
She couldn't help but be in love with James Langton. It was a cliché but Anna had fallen in love with him when she first set eyes on him as a young Detective Sergeant.
So when she found out he was married, after everything they had been through, it felt like someone had punched her in the stomach and knocked the wind out of her.
She got out of the bath, lent over and pulled out the plug. Then, wrapping herself in a towel she went directly into the bedroom, towards the bed where her pyjamas were lying folded up.
Drying her body with the towel, she pulled on her pyjamas, put the towel in the wash basket and left the bedroom. She went to the kitchen, took a bottle of red wine out of the fridge and went to pour herself a glass when the door bell rang.
Her eyes glanced at the clock.
Grabbing the keys off the side, she went over to the front door. Checking through the peep-hole to see who it was, she was shocked to discover James on her doorstep. With a sigh, she unlocked the door and pulled it open.
"James?" She said softly, "What are you doing here?"
It seemed silly for him to be here, especially after everything he had told her in the taxi. How she was special to him but they couldn't get back together because he was married with children. And less than an hour after telling her all that, he was here, disturbing her.
He didn't do anything, didn't utter one word and instead kissed her.
She could taste the tabacco on his lips and she closed her eyes. Her stomach was doing backflips and she could've sworn her heart had stopped beating.
Then, she remembered everything they'd discussed earlier and broke apart.
"Your married, remember." She reminded him, a soft sigh escaped her lips as she did.
He gently caressed her cheek before he answered; "I've left her."
And neither of them speak, they didn't have too to know what the other was thinking. Instead, he closed the front door with his foot, kissed her with a bit more passion and started to move towards the bedroom.
"I love you Anna." He told her as he pressed his lips to hers for a third time that evening, "It just took me this evening to figure out how much."
a/n: if you like it enough to favourite, please review. this fic is pretty much an AU scene to the last page of Silent Scream, the book.
