stroke of luck
an above suspicion fanfiction
She ran down the field, shoved him and said, "Have you lost your mind?"
He looked at her for a second before replying, "That's my career up the spout, what do I bloody care?"
He walked off and she stood alone, watching him trying to catch her breath.
"I care!" She whispered, "I care." Just a tiny bit of silence, "I love you!"
She hadn't expected him to hear her, especially with a jet going over the top of them. She sighed, looking down at the ground, tears already pouring down her cheeks.
He stopped in his tracks. Did he just hear what he thought he just heard? Did she just tell him she loved him? He turned around. Her back was to him, looking up at the sky.
"What did you say?" He asked.
His voice startled her and she turned to face him, the tell-tale signs of mascara lining her cheeks.
"I said I care." She spoke, "I said I care that was all." She wasn't a convincing liar.
"You said something after that." She raised an eyebrow, "Did I?" She smiled a little.
He walked towards her, not taking his eyes off her. She knew he had heard and he knew what she had said. They stood in front of one another, the sirens in the distance the only sound that could be heard and he asked softly, "Dinner, with me, tonight at seven?"
She looked down at the ground. She didn't even have to think about the answer she was going to give. She wanted to have dinner with James, even if it never worked out again, at least she could say, deep down - that she tried to make it work.
Nodding she swallowed hard, "Okay." He smiled, cupped her face in his hands and kissed her softly. Although she hesitated for a moment, she kissed him back. As they broke apart, her cheeks turned red and he smirked.
"You know I love it when you blush."
She just smiled and made her way towards the car. When her back was to him, he replied, "I love you."
And there was a certain sparkle in her eyes as she headed for the car.
