This is my first ever fanfic' after reading and loving so many. Hoping it's good but any constructive feedback is great! Please don't be a flame monster, because it's not cool and kind of childish. I'll eventually adapt into a Dark Harry fanfic (If it's good of course!)

Please review, it gives me so much motivation!

I don't own HP or any of the incorporated characters/places. That belongs to JK's brilliant mind.

***I have been on a MASSIVE hiatus, and have now edited some of the chapters. I'm sorry! Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me to keep writing!*** I am now back and have decided to continue this lovely fic so here is chapter 6 for you lovely people!

As they approached their destination, the group decided it was time to change into their school robes. The girls went off to find a private area to change, whilst the boys stayed in the compartment. Alex, however, also found a different place to change as he didn't want anybody seeing the scars left from his childhood. Once they had all changed and congregated back in their compartment, they went about tidying up from their many games of chess, exploding snap and gobstones. Plus the incredible amounts of rubbish from the sweet trolley earlier. Soon enough they pulled into the station, being instructed to leave all belongings behind, and made their way onto the platform.

"Firs' years follow me!" called a gruff voice, which came from the largest man Alex had ever seen.

Immediately Alex recalled who he was. This was the half-giant oaf his father had set up to take the fall when he opened the chamber of secrets. Apparently he had quite a love of dangerous violent creatures.

He sneered and joined his friends at the back of the first year crowd. Slowly they made their way down some slippery steps toward the river bank where the boats were situated.

"No more than four to a boat" called the disgusting half-breed, as Alex, Daphne, Draco and Theo claimed themselves the closest boat.

Once everyone was in a boat, they started moving across the black lakes surface. The boats barely made ripples upon the glasslike surface, and Alex wondered where the giant squid was within the deep pool of water.

Looking ahead he saw the boats were heading toward a veil of ivy, and told his companions to duck unless they wanted to end up in the lake. Unfortunately, as they passed through, someone in another boat obviously hadn't thought of ducking because a loud splash was heard and a gruff voice swearing echoed through the cave a moment later.

Sighing, Alex commanded everyone else out of their boats, whilst the giant went to fetch a very wet student. A very stern looking woman was waiting for them at the top of the steps, and once everyone was there, she dried out the snivelling wet child.

"What is your name boy?" she asked to the now dry brunette

"N...Neville Longbottom miss..." he managed to stammer out, to which she merely looked at him before turning to address the crowd.

"Welcome to Hogwarts, my name is Professor McGonagall" said the stern witch.

"The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room. The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours. The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarted yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting." Her eyes lingered for a moment on Neville's cloak, which was fastened under his left ear, and on a redhead further away.

Alex looked around with an air of disdain.
"I will return when we are ready for you." said Professor McGonagall. 'Please wait quietly." With that, she left, leaving the first years alone.

"I heard that Harry Potter was going to be here, but then I saw the newspaper. I bet that source is making it all up you know, Dumbledore is just hiding Potter away to train him to kill you-know-who away from the rest of us." The redhead said obnoxiously.

"Weasley, will you keep your mouth shut about matters you know nothing about? What if the boy really has been abused? What if he's dead? Do you really want to speak ill of the dead?" Draco sneered.

At those words Weasley paled, realising that he indeed knew nothing and should keep his mouth shut. However blissful silence was not to be had as one of the girls in the crowd screamed. It seemed the Hogwarts ghosts had come through the wall with good luck wishes.

Alex yawned as the Professor came back and ushered them into the Great Hall in twos, leading them to the staff table where she placed a stool and a manky old tattered hat. He grimaced at the thought of the disgusting object touching his head.

Suddenly, a rip at the brim of the hat opened up and started to sing of all things!

"Oh you may not think me pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

Alex gawped at the hat, suddenly panicking that it would spill all his secrets. That people would know who he really was. Thankfully Draco hit him in the arm so he could compose himself before anyone noticed his momentary lapse.

"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted." she said before unravelling a long scroll of parchment.

"Bones, Susan"

"Brown, Lavender"

A lot more names were called before Alex got interested in who went where. He had thought it would be in alphabetical order, but for some reason it wasn't. The bushy haired girl, named Hermione Granger, went to Ravenclaw; Longbottom somehow went to Gryffindor along with Weasley, and his entire group went to Slytherin.

He and some fellow students were the last few.

"Riddle, Alexander"

Silence. Even the headmaster leaned forward in his seat, his usual twinkling eyes having dulled. Slowly Alex picked up the hat, sat on the stool and placed it on his head.

"Ah! Now what have we here? My, my, young mister Potter, we thought you'd been misplaced! But you aren't Potter anymore are you? No… No you're his now. No matter, no matter. Don't worry I am bound by magic not to reveal anything I find in head to anyone. Even old Dumbledore can't stop me. That brings me to why we're here… Where to put you? Hm, definitely not a Hufflepuff, you have loyalty only to your father. You're smart, but Ravenclaw wouldn't help you in your path to prove yourself. Dumbledore is desperate you don't follow your father's footsteps into darkness. However he cannot stop what has already happened. So, it better be…"

I'm sorry, I left it on a cliffhanger!

Will it be Gryffindor or Slytherin that he gets into do you think?

Much loves xx
