Some choices we live not only once but a thousand times over, remembering them for the rest of our lives.
"I don't have a choice!" Luce yelled, her voice cracking under the heavy weight of that statement.
"But you do have a choice!" Cam spat at Luce, while attempting to steady himself against the nearest tree.
Luce slowly turned to face Cam. He had blood trickling down the side of his head from the earlier clash with Daniel. Luce felt the need to help him, although she knew the wound would quickly heal. Luce noticed that his hair was unusually unkempt as it lay wet and matted down to his head from the pouring rain. His familiar smile had long disappeared and was replaced by an expression filled with hurt and desperation.
As Cam attempted to walk towards Luce, his body began to tremble causing him to fall back against the moss-covered tree. He bent over and grasped for air. His eyes blurred as he stared at the ground, trying to recall another time in history that he had ever felt so exhausted.
"Cam, please…" was all that Luce could get out before the tears began to fall. She felt them burn as they rolled down her cold, flushed cheeks. She didn't bother to brush them away as she hoped they would simply blend in with the rain.
After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Daniel walked into the clearing from the opposite side of Cam. He held his lead low, never making eye contact with Luce. "Cam is right," Daniel whispered, "You have a choice. You've alwayshad a choice. You were never forced to love me."
Luce opened her mouth to say something but no words escaped her lips. Her mind was racing and yet it seemed as though the world around her had stopped. Above her, lightening flashed and spread throughout the sky like vines. Thunder echoed throughout the valley, adding to the intensity of the situation. Luce was thankful she found Cam and Daniel when she did; there was no telling if they would have stopped this time.
Luce closed her eyes, imagining a time when she felt safe in the arms of an angel. She recalled how her arms would drape around his shoulders and his beautiful wings would surround her. However, as Luce began to search for the face whose embrace she longed for, she saw Daniel's blond hair and perfect smile fade into darkness. The darkness transformed into another shape, slowly taking form of another angel –Cam. Luce's eyes shot open as she let out a cry. She felt nauseous but for reasons she did not expect.
Suddenly, she felt a gush of wind beside her, almost knocking her feet out from under her. She turned to find Cam's powerful wings open and ready to fly. He said nothing but held out his hand. Before Luce had a chance to accept his invitation, Daniel unfurled his own glorious wings and within an instant, he was gone.
"Well, it looks like you don't have to choose after all," Cam said as he pulled Luce into his arms. Luce turned her head to catch a glimpse of Daniel fading into the darkness before she was swept away.
