No idea where this came from. It's my first RumBelle story, and it broke my heart to write it. Major character death, so read on at your own discretion. Enjoy.
Disclaimer: Not mine!
The sky was blood red overhead, and everywhere Belle looked, she could only see pain and destruction. The final battle had begun between good and evil, with blood being shed on both sides. Across the way, she could see Charming and Snow fighting alongside Emma; a family destined to prevail no matter what.
Temporarily distracted, she didn't see the cold glint of a steel knife. Instead, she saw a blur of dark blue and charcoal. Her heart exploded in her chest when she heard the man she loved cry out in pain and sink to one knee. Fueled by rage, she went after the one who had yielded the knife. Though not well versed in hand-to-hand combat, she quickly dispatched of him. Then she spun around in time to see another minion standing over Rumplestiltskin, his intent clear.
As she raced back to him, Charming suddenly spun around and drove his sword through the minion. Then he returned to the battle against Cora, buying Belle a few precious moments.
Rumplestiltskin was still on his knees as Belle finally dropped down beside him, and she gasped as he pitched forward into her arms. "No!" His blood flowed freely from the site where the knife had pierced his flesh.
A long, agonizing wail filled their ears, and she looked up to see Cora explode into fire and dust. They had succeeded! Good had finally prevailed, but at what cost?
Her eyes went back to Rumplestiltskin, cradled in her arms. His chest heaved with every breath he drew. Freeing one hand, she brushed his hair out of his face and kissed his forehead. She could feel the life ebbing out of him, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
Opening his eyes, Rumplestiltskin smiled up at her. "It's okay, Belle," he whispered, a thin line of blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
"No, it's not." She sniffled and held him even tighter, unable to bear the thought of letting him go after everything they had gone through to find each other again.
"It is." His hand came up and gently touched her cheek. "I promise, it is." His voice grew weaker. "I love you, Belle."
"I love you, too, Rum." Tears ran steadily down her cheeks as she closed the distance between them and gently kissed his pliant lips.
Every person who lived in Storybrooke gathered around them, almost forming a protective circle as they watched the sad scene unfold.
Belle slowly broke the kiss and watched as his head lolled against her shoulder. She raised her hand and gently held his head in place. A content smile curved his mouth, her name passing his lips again as he exhaled softly.
Belle sobbed when he relaxed against her and went. The only man she had ever loved was gone, leaving a gaping hole in her heart where he had once been.
The battle had been fought, and good had ultimately won.
But at what cost?
A/N: Like I said, no idea where this came from! I promise, the next RumBelle story I write will be much happier! Thanks for reading, and please review!
