Hey everyone. Long time no see! I finally had a chance to upload the future take that I donated to Fandom for LLS. I hope you like it. It is something that has been floating around in my head for a while now. This is Edward with grown kids and his struggles to be a well rounded father. There isn't much Mobward in this piece. It isn't totally fluffy, there is a bit of angst, but I think you will enjoy it.
I have to say a big, big thank you to the awesome Deebelle OneFic for being an amazing pre reader and banner maker. Also, big love to Kitchmill for her truly awesome beta skills. Lord knows I need them! Thank you ladies so so much.
As always, I own nothing. But thank you to Stephanie Meyers for letting me play with her characters. Although, CJ, EJ, Nia, Dominic and Sophia are mine.
I will stop chattering and get on with it. I hope you like it.

"How do I know I can trust that my shipments aren't going to get stolen the moment the boat hits the docks?"
I watch as my sons look at each other and recline back in their seats. EJ is first to speak. "First off, we are not the Russians. No offense to you, but all I have to do is put my name out there and I can get double the amount of guns that you have on your boat at any given time."
"And secondly, you have our word. Ask anyone what the Cullen word is worth. You will find out that we speak truth. If we say your shipment is going to be safe and sound, it will be safe and sound. We wouldn't have as many people using our property if we spoke lies," CJ continues before taking a pull from his cigarette.
The two gentlemen we're doing business with look at each other, silently having a conversation.
I look over to my boys. My twins. You really can't tell them apart, besides the fact that CJ smokes whereas EJ doesn't. They each have Bella's dark brown hair—I thank God that they weren't cursed with my mop of hair—but they have my deep green eyes. They have their grandmother's gentleness, but cross them and they have their grandfather's temper. At twenty, they remind me so much of myself back then—so willing to learn and eager to make their mark in this thing of ours.
"Would it be possible for my colleague and I to have a moment to discuss things?" one of the gentlemen asks.
"Of course, we will give you some privacy," EJ says before we all stand and walk toward the bar in the private room of the club we are at. As we reach the bar, the waitress has three drinks waiting for us. Jasper and Emmett are already sitting there waiting for us to come back. "I think we've got 'em," EJ admits quietly and then takes a sip of his Jack and Coke. Even though he is only twenty, what his mother doesn't know about him drinking doesn't hurt her.
"You both handled it well." I nod while taking a pull from my scotch.
"It's taking longer than anticipated," Jaspers says.
CJ's phone begins ringing. "It's Nia," he informs me before walking away to answer it.
"I didn't know that we were in a certain time frame. These kinds of negations take time, Jas. You know this."
"Yes, Edward, I know that. However, Sophia's showcase is tonight. You told Bella you were going to make it this time."
"Shit! Fucking hell!" I press my fingers into the bridge of my nose, berating myself as I also promised to meet her for drinks beforehand. I pull out my cell phone and see that I have fourteen text messages and eight missed calls from Bella, Peter and Dad. As I scroll through the messages they begin very innocently.
You should have been here fifteen minutes ago. ~ B
This is really embarrassing. Being stood up by my own husband. Your ass better be at the performance. ~B
So fucking help me, Edward! ~B
Hai esattamente otto minuti prima che il sipario si alza. (You have exactly eight minutes before the curtain rises.) ~B
I skipped all the way down to the end, because she was texting in Italian, something she only does when she is feeling flirty or extremely pissed off, and it's safe to say she isn't flirting with me.
I suggest you not come home tonight.
Fuck me! She didn't even sign her initial. Just then CJ walks back over to the bar. "We need to hurry them up. Mom is beyond pissed at us. Nia isn't too happy either. Shit, Dad, if I were you I would put on the Kevlar before you go home tonight."
"Go back over there and end it," I say before gulping down the rest of my scotch. "Jas, go with them. Tell them I had a family emergency come up. Take four grand off the price for my rudeness in leaving so quickly."
I head out the door and find Jake waiting for me. "Is the car ready?"
"Stefan is waiting in the driver's seat out front. Everything okay, boss?"
"Nope, I have an angry wife waiting for me."
"That's never a good thing. I remember a few moments of angry Bella. I have an extra room if you need it," he says with a laugh. Fucker.
"Where to, boss?" Stefan asks as Jake closes the back door and makes his way to the passenger side.
I look down at my watch and see that I am too late to make it to the theatre to see any of the show. Shit, they are probably already at the restaurant celebrating. "Stop at the market. I want to pick up some flowers first, then to Bella Italia."
I sit back in the seat and close my eyes, and I think back on to the conversation I had with Bella a few months back. She got on my ass about not being more present in Sophia's life. I couldn't argue with her because it's true.
It's not that I don't love her. I love that girl with all my heart, just like I do her brothers and sister. It's just that I can't find anything to connect with her on.
Antonia is in her first year of law school, and while I studied business in college, Nia is studying law to join the family business and so we have a common interest. I have no doubt in my mind that she along with my twins will lead our family strongly into the future when I step back. EJ and CJ are me through and through. They have always known that our family was special and not like the average family. The day I told them about the family history, I noticed their posture change, their attitudes change. They decided they were going to take over as history dictates. They took their place under my wings just as I had with my father, and I couldn't have been prouder.
Even Dominic, our youngest, knows of the family business and is well on his way to taking on Jas's role when he steps down. He is my level-headed child.
But then there is my Sophia, my little Pia. She is her mother through and through. A true artist at heart. At the age of two Bella had her in ballet classes, and she loved it.
Bella never will admit it, but I know she was sad when Nia decided at eight that she didn't want to be a dancer anymore. Bella, being the amazing mother that she is, simply smiled and told her it was her life to live and whatever made her happy was what she should be doing.
But Sophia, she took to dance like a duck to water. By ten she was itching to dance on pointe like he mother. Bella and Erik, both being the amazing teachers they are, told her she had to wait until she was twelve.
She is my free spirit. She knows what the family does and wants no part of it. I won't lie and say it doesn't sting, but I understand. She hates violence and confrontation. She just isn't made for my world and that is fine. She is my princess, just like Bella. It kills me that I can't connect with her. I spend days on end with Nia, CJ, EJ and Dom, but not with Sophia. She is Bella's shadow.
That's not to say that Bella only spends time with Sophia. She is always shopping with Nia or having lunch with the boys. For some reason I just don't do that with Pia. And Bella called me on it.
Sadly, this would have been one of the first showcases I attended. I was always in a meeting or out of town or entertaining associates. Bella made it clear that if I wasn't there for this one that there would be hell to pay. I'm thinking CJ was right; I should have grabbed one of the Kevlar vests before I left.
"We're here, boss," Stefan announces as he pulls up in front of the upscale marketplace. I hop out and make my way to the large flower section with Jake on my heels.
I'm standing in front of the very large selection completely dumb struck. Who the hell knew there were so many flowers in the world? What the hell kind of flowers do you give your seventeen-year-old whose showcase you just missed?
"Are you looking for anything specific?" the older saleswoman asks.
"My seventeen-year-old daughter just had a dance showcase."
"Ah, a ballerina?"
"Yes. Amongst other styles, but she is a ballerina at heart."
"Well, she will have gotten many roses, so why don't we make yours stand out, hmm?"
I watch as she goes into the large cooler case and starts plucking sprigs of different shades of purples, pinks, yellows and greens. She has them arranged and wrapped in a bow in no time flat. I reach and pull out my wallet. "How much do I owe you?"
"No charge. It's the end of the day. I am just happy they have a home now."
I smile and pull out a hundred dollar bill and press it into her hand. "A tip then." She beings to protest, but I stop her. "You saved me from having to figure this out on my own. Please take it."
She smiles and tucks the money into her pocket, waving to us as we make our way back to the SUV.

As soon as we pull up to the restaurant, Jake and I make our way in. "Mr. Cullen, the family is in the back room," the hostess tells me.
"Thank you, Manda," I call over my shoulder as we continue on our way. As we walk in my eyes find my wife, whose eyes meet mine and once again I regret not grabbing the Kevlar. I swallow down the lump forming in my chest and walk past the disapproving looks I get from my mother and oldest daughter.
I walk over to stand behind Pia who is sitting next to Brandon, Peter and Erik's adopted son. I slide the flowers in front of her. "Dolce ragazza, mi dispiace ho era't lì. I vostri fratelli e io abeam avuto un incontro che ha investito." (Sweet girl, I am so sorry I wasn't there. Your brothers and I had a meeting that ran over.)
"Va tutto bene, papà, non è il primo che ti sei perso." (It's okay, Daddy, it's not the first one that you've missed.)
And that statement right there is like a hundred bullets to my chest. It takes everything in me to not let out a sob as my chest tightens. I close my eyes and just let the pain spread. I lean down and kiss her cheek before making my way over to Bella. She looks up at me and I lean down to kiss her, but she simply stands and announces that she is going to use the bathroom.
I watch her retreating form and let out a sigh. I make my way to follow her but am stopped by my parents. "I might give her some time to cool off before you talk to her, son. There are lots of knifes out there," my father jokes.
"Edward, family comes first. I don't care how much that deal was worth. Nothing is worth seeing the look of disappointment on my granddaughter's face when she looks for you and realizes that you didn't show up again," my mother says, looking over at Pia.
I sigh and stand before continuing after Bella. As I reach the door I see her standing with CJ and EJ. "Both of you know how important tonight was to her. She worked her ass off on this show. Eight numbers! She was in eight numbers!" she whisper-yells while poking our sons in their chests. "Ogni partita di calcio, ogni partita di basket. Ogni evento diverso da quello che si sia fatto diventare lei è stato lì per entrambi." (Every football game, every basketball game. Every event other than you both becoming made she has been there for both of you.)
"Mamma, questo è stato un grande incontro che abbiamo ..." (Mom, this was a big meeting we ...)
"Non mi interessa se era vale tutti i soldi in China! Tua sorella non può mostrare, ma lei è stata schiacciata quando è venuta fuori dopo lo spettacolo e notò che entrambi voi e il vostro padre non erano lì fuori." (I don't care if it was worth all the money in China! Your sister may not show it, but she was crushed when she came out after the show and noticed that both of you and your father were not out there.)
Bella is red-faced with anger now. "I have never in your twenty years been so disappointed and angry at you boys. Vai avanti. Arrivare lì e dire ciao alla famiglia" (Go on. Get in there and say hello to the family.)
I stand to the side as they make their way into the room. Bella and I both just stand there looking at each other. I haven't done anything this bad to piss her off since she was pregnant with Nia and I forgot a doctor's appointment. I open my mouth to speak and she stops me before I have a chance.
"Standing me up is one thing, making me feel bad is another, but to make our daughter feel like she did tonight is not acceptable."
"Bella, I had every intention of being there, but this meeting …"
"Just like I told your sons, I don't care if it was worth all the money in China. Your family, the family we created together, comes first!" she again whisper-yells and turns to walk back into the private dining room. "If you value all your parts, you will keep your distance from me tonight."
Well fuck me! I sigh and rake my hands over my face before turning and walking back into the dining room. I see the boys have taken Pia to the side and are talking quietly to her. I notice she keeps her head down, looking at the floor instead of at them. CJ takes his fingers and tilts her head to look at him before he takes her hand in his and places it over his heart. I see tears slip down her cheeks and EJ reach over and wipe them away. CJ hugs her and lifts her slightly off the ground. EJ takes her when her feet hit the ground and begins to dance with her to Sinatra playing in the background. I smile when Pia throws her head back, laughing as he spins her out and then dips her. I glance over at Bella who is smiling at our children.
I take a seat next to Peter who passes me a glass of wine. "Any clue how I can make this better?"
"I haven't seen Bells this made in a long time. I would say time and a lot of groveling."
I look up at Bella and smile at her, but she simply turns her head and starts talking to Rose. I am well and truly fucked.
After eating dinner and talking—well, I listen while everyone talks around me—we all get up to make our way home." I walk over to Bella and help her with her coat. Pia walks over and hugs Bella. "I'll be back by midnight, Mama."
"Where are you going?" I ask.
"Um, Brandon and I are meeting some of the other dancers at the rehearsal space for a party. It's tradition for the dancers."
"Do you need a driver?"
"Peter and Erik at taking us, and then Stefan is picking us up and bringing us home."
"Do you need any money?" I ask, reaching for my wallet.
"No. I've got my allowance still."
"That was almost a month ago. Are you sure you have enough?"
"She's our responsible kid. She deposits her money into her savings account. I bet she has a least a few grand. Besides, she's not a big spender," Bella praises, squeezing Pia's hand.
"Still, it's a special night, save your money, ragazza dolce," (sweet girl) I say as I pull out a hundred and hand it to her. She just looks at it for a moment, not wanting to accept it. "Please, let me."
She finally accepts it and gives me a weak smile before turning and walking away. "Can your old man get a hug?" I yell to her.
She turns back to me and walks back over and wraps her warms around my waist. I engulf her in my arms and rest my head on top of hers. I inhale the sweet smell of her hair—watermelon, I think. "Si prega di perdonare tuo padre stupido." (Please forgive your stupid father.)
She pulls back and looks at me, giving me a weak smile. "Va bene. Ho imparato ad aspettarsi che l'attività viene prima di me." (It's fine. I've come to expect that business comes before me.)
"Pia," I breathe out, shocked by her statement.
She just shrugs at me. "I'll be home by midnight, Mama," she repeats before she turns and walks toward Brandon.
I look over to Bella who has tears in her eyes. "I imagine that statement hurts worse than a bullet."
I just nod, because if I speak right now the sob that is sitting in my throat will escape.
"It's late, and I have a nine a.m. ballet class to teach tomorrow," she says as she makes her way to the door.
"Stefan is out front with the SUV, Bella," Jake tells her.
She nods and walks out in front of me.

As we finally make it home after the longest and quietest car ride ever, I watch Bella toss her coat on the bench by the front door and then make her way up the stairs.
"Bella!" I yell out to her as I take off my coat and toss it along with hers. "Bella!"
She doesn't stop, so I take the stairs two at a time to catch up to her. Once she makes it to the top she heads for our bedroom.
I watch as she storms in and begins taking off her jewelry. "God damn it. Bella. Will you just talk to me? I said I was sorry. I apologized to Pia. What more do you want me to do?"
"I want you to be a father to all of your children, Edward! That's what I fucking want!" she seethes. "You can't just be a father to your children who are part of the family business."
"I love Sophia with all of my heart, so don't you dare try and say that I don't!"
"I never said you didn't love her, but loving a child and actively being a part of their lives are two different things." She marches over to the bookshelf in our bedroom and grabs a photo album off the shelf and tosses it at me. I choose to believe that she has bad aim and wasn't aiming for my head. "Look inside. Those are the photos from the last six years of Sophia's dancing. Do you notice anything?"
I look down at the pictures on the pages. Pia in a red frilly tutu. Pia in a bright yellow dress in tap shoes. So many costumes, and I couldn't remember any of them.
"Do you see all the family pictures? Do you notice what is missing in those pictures?"
I look down at Mom and Dad beaming at her as she holds bouquets of flowers. I see Bella standing next to Pia at fourteen and they are both wearing the same costume. There are pictures of Peter and Erik smiling down at her; Alec and Siobhan holding her with smiles on their faces. Hell, even Stefan and Angela were there. But I wasn't in any of them.
"After every performance she would ask where you were, her little-girl brain not understanding why her daddy wasn't there to watch her twirl on stage. Then the sadness turned to anger. When I would apologize for you not being there she would just laugh and say 'I wasn't expecting him to be here anyway.' She had to watch all the other dancers with their fathers, and the anger went back to sadness." She sits on the end of the bed and tucks her feet under her taking in a shaky breath. "Did you know that she is on antidepressants?"
At that statement, my head snaps up to her and I fall back into the chair of Bella's vanity. "What?"
"About six months ago, I walked into the studio and she was in one of the rehearsal rooms crying, sobbing really. I ran in there thinking that she was hurt. When I asked her what was wrong she looked up at me, with your eyes, and told me that she was just so sad. When I asked her why she said because she felt so alone, because she felt like she just didn't belong anywhere." She stops talking because she is crying now. I get up and go to her, but she just pushes me away and it stings. "She asked me to help her to not feel so broken. That maybe if she got some help you would …" She trails off because she is crying harder. "… that maybe you would love her again."
My heart just falls out of my chest. I can't believe she thinks that I don't love her. I watch as Bella wipes her face and stands up. She walks to the dresser and pulls out her pajamas. I stand and start undoing my tie. "Edward, I love you, but I really don't like you very much right now. It would be wise if you slept in one of the guest rooms tonight."
I go to her and pull her into my arms before she can make it into the bathroom. "I will make this better, love. I promise. Just, don't give up on me."
"I love you with all my heart, Edward, but I really want to beat the living hell out of you. You have missed so much greatness from her. I understand that she is not easy to relate to for you. She is her own person who dances to the beat of her own drum; she is so much more me than you. But you need to look past the black and white and see all the color that she brings to this family." She kisses me softly before turning and walking into the bathroom.
◊◊◊◊ TLOAF ◊◊◊◊
I toss and turn for what seems like hours before I finally get up and make my way down the stairs. I pour myself a glass of scotch and disarm the alarm before moving out onto the back deck. I sit down in the chair and pull out the cigarettes I stashed in my pocket. Lighting one, I lean back and inhale the nicotine and then exhale, enjoying the burn in my lungs and nose.
I pride myself on keeping my business in line. I don't let anyone step out of line. If they do, they answer to me. They usually answer to my fists or my gun. But now, now it is me who has stepped so far out of line that I actually begin to wonder if I can get back in.
As I sit taking in the peace of my backyard, I hear someone shuffling in the kitchen. I turn around to see Pia peeking out of the sliding door. "Did I wake you, ragazza dolce?"
"No," she says, shuffling her slipper covered feet as she steps out and takes the chair next to me, pulling her legs up to her chest after she sits. "I usually have a hard time sleeping after a show. The energy just won't leave my body."
"Like mother, like daughter. There were many nights when she would call me while I was away at college because she couldn't sleep after a show."
She smiles and hums in response. "I didn't know you smoked, Daddy."
"I usually don't," I state with a dry laugh. "Tonight has just not been the greatest night for me, ragazza dolce."
"Did your meeting not go well?"
I stare blankly at her. God, what the hell have I done? "No, ragazza dolce," I say quietly, stubbing out my cigarette. "I owe you …" I stop because I feel the tears being to form. I put my fist up to my mouth to try and stop the sob from escaping, but it doesn't help. "I am so sorry Sophia. I … I love you so very much and I've hurt you so much because of my stupidity. Because of my shortcomings you feel as though I don't have time for you."
I reach out and grab her hands, pulling them to my lips and kissing her knuckles. "Ragazza dolce, please believe me when I tell you, you are worth so much more than any business deal or meeting to me."
She inhales a shaky breath and looks me in the eyes. "It doesn't always feel that way, Daddy. I get that you are proud of Nia for becoming a lawyer, for wanting to be a part of what you and Nonno do, that EJ and CJ want to follow you in line for head of the family, and that even Dom wants to be a part of the organization. But, I think that what I do is pretty damn awesome, too." She stands and begins pacing around the deck. "I have the ability to move people. To make them smile, or laugh, or cry. I can make them forget the shit day that they have had with just a flick of my wrist and pointing my toes."
If my heart didn't feel like it was in a million pieces I would find her outburst adorable. She is so much her mother, puffing out her chest and talking with her hands while chewing on her bottom lip.
"You are very important. You are my little Pia. My angel. Was I disappointed that you don't want to be some part in my business? Of course, but your mother was also disappointed that Nia didn't want to follow in her footsteps and be a dancer. But, it doesn't change the fact that I love you, ragazza dolce, with all my heart. I just want you to be happy. If dancing makes you happy, then that is what you are supposed to do." I get up and walk over to where she is standing and looking at me. I take her face in my hands and kiss her forehead. "I am so sorry that I made you feel less than the amazing person that you are. I will spend forever trying to make it up to you." I sob, finally letting the tears fall.
"I just want you to notice me, Daddy."
"Oh, sweet girl," I cry as I pull her head to my chest.
I don't know how long we stand there holding each other before I feel her shifting on her feet. I loosen my hold and pull back.
"Sorry. My feet are kinda killing me. I've been dancing a lot of pointe work the past few weeks."
I move her over to the chairs we were sitting in and set her down. I pull my chair in front of hers and then pull her feet into my lap. I toss her slippers to the side and being rubbing her feet for her.
"Oh wow, that feels amazing," she murmurs as I rub my knuckle along her arch.
"I used to do this for your mother. I'm great at making sore feet feel better," I say with a laugh.
We sit in silence for a while as I rub her feet. "I just have to let you know that I will be at your next performance, Pia. I promise."
"It won't be for a few months. That's when the next showcase happens."
"I wish I could have seen you tonight. Your mother says you were in eight numbers."
She nods her head and pulls her phone from her pocket. She fiddles with something before she hands her phone out to me. "Uncle Erik recorded the piece that he helped me with."
I take the phone from her and she pulls her feet from my lap, tucking her knees into her chest. I press the play icon and watch as the lights come up on the stage. There she sits, tucked into a ball-like form dressed in a light peach colored baby doll style dress that ends mid thigh. A slow breathy beat flows from the speakers and into the theatre. When the lyrics sing out, she begins slowly unfolding herself from her position.
I can hold my breath
I can bite my tongue
I can stay awake for days
If that's what you want
Be your number one
She begins a series of strength poses. Her leg lifts straight above her head before she goes into an arabesque pose. I can fake a smile
I can force a laugh
I can dance and play the part
If that's what you ask
Give you all I am
She slowly does a few turns in time with the lyrics of the song. After each turn she looks out the audience, hauntingly right to Erik's camera lens. I can do it
I can do it
I can do it
She begins a series of leaps around the stage.
But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
I cringe as she gracefully throws her body to the ground, pretending to lose her balance and fall.
Your words in my head, knives in my heart I can turn it on
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human
Be a good machine
I can hold the weight of worlds
If that's what you need
Be your everything
I get lost in her movement across the stage. She is telling the audience her story using her arms and legs. With every muscle, every breath she inhales and exhales, her story unfolds as the lyrics sing on. I can do it But I'm only human I'm only human
I can do it
I'll get through it
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human
I'm only human
Just a little human
The lyrics stop and so does all of her movement. She just stands on the stage with her arms at her side, palms facing out, showing us all of her soul, all of her heart. I can take so much
She walks forward, wiping the tears from her face.
'Til I've had enough
She clenches her heart and her gut with her hands. When the lyrics hit again, she is off and leaping, spinning and stretching. 'Cause I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human
As the song ends, she is simply standing with her head down and her hand clutching the back of her neck. I hear Erik yell, "Bravo, sunshine! Just beautiful!" through his sniffing and tears. Then the video ends.
I look up at her and she is staring at me. "Uncle Erik helped me with the choreography when I got stuck. I choreographed it for you."
I put her phone on the table and pull her from her chair and into my lap. "Ti vedo. Ti vedo."(I see you. I see you.) And it's true, even if she doesn't wholly believe it
After a few minutes of us sitting there together I clear my throat. "It's late, ragazza dolce." And as if on cue she yawns.
We make our way back into the house. I turn off the light as we make our way to the stairs. As we get to the top I hug her to me once more. "How about we spend the day together tomorrow? Anything you want to do, we'll do."
"I have morning classes, but my afternoon block is open."
"I'll pick you from school then. We can have lunch and decide what we want to do after."
She nods, and I hug her and kiss her head once more. I watch as she makes her way to her bedroom and closes her door. I make my way down the hall to the guest room when I hear, "Hey."
I turn around and see Bella's tear stained face standing in the door way to our bedroom. "I'm sorry if we woke you."
"You didn't. I've been listening from the balcony. I couldn't sleep so I was sitting out there and looking at the stars."
"I meant every word I said. I'm going to prove to her, and to you I see her. I am going to do better by her."
"I believe you."
We stand and stare at each other for the longest time. I walk over and cradle her face in my hands and kiss her lips softly. "Buonanotte, amore mio." (Goodnight, my love.)
I move to walk towards the guest room but stop as I feel her hand grab my arm. "Come to bed, Edward. I don't like sleeping alone." She smiles at me before leading me into our bedroom for the night.
I'm grateful I'll be able to sleep now. I have so much that I need to begin making up for … with both of my princesses.
I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know what you think. I love reading your thoughts.
For those who have been wondering, I fell into a bit of a writing slump. But, I am working on a piece, it is a Dancerward piece. I want to get a big bulk witten and beta'd before I post so that can have a posting schedule. So, keep and eye out.
