Chapter 1) -Bitter Dreams- (Inspired by Evanescence's "Whisper", "Haunted", "Going Under")

Jareth woke up screaming her name again, his dreams of her had been constant since his defeat by her in the Escher room so long ago. Sarah Williams the only person to ever defeat the labyrinth, his labyrinth!
"SARAH, Sarah, …... Sarah! Why did you go? Why I am lost with out you? As I took from you,….. you also took from me. More so you broke my heart."
10 years had past in the mortal realm, and she still haunted his dreams. But time in the mortal realm was different then in the fae realms and Jareth knew this better that one else did.

Squelpin saw his king having the dreams with the lady again, and tucked himself into a corner til his master called to him. It was the routine they had shared since the shattering of the top of the Escher room, since the shattering of Jareth. Sarah had blindly championed the Labyrinth, leaving heavy destruction in her wake in both kingdom and king. Every day since then Squelpin shook his head dreading his king and masters call, not out of fear but out of resignation. The Jareth who now called him was nothing but a crystal shard of himself.

What the goblin knew and had to find a way to get it into the king's head, was that Jareth needed to see Sarah again. Everything suffered in her departure and he, Jareth had lost his luster for fun and games. Lost his kingly essence, nothing interested him nor amused him but everything made him angry.
In turn, this affected the entire kingdom especially the denizens of the Labyrinth and the Labyrinth it self. In many ways Jareth couldn't be Jareth with out the Labyrinth and the same went for the Labyrinth it was falling apart, it showed on the outside, the over time decomposure of Jareth's mental state.
Squelpin came to the slow realization that it was very possible that Jareth couldn't be Jareth with out Sarah.

The blonde fae called his goblin attendant over requesting water and some sort of fruit.
Squelpin brought his king water and some bilberries, it seemed to help his majesty, but the goblin knew he had to find a way to make his king ok, knowing that he would continue to disintegrate if something didn't drastically change soon. Jareth moved as a man deeply haunted by his thoughts, and he continually was.
The Goblin attendant spoke in his gravelly voice "Majesty you should get up and move around the cook just finished a batch of fresh shepard and mincemeat pies, I know those greatly please your palette. We also have an excellent vintage mead in the larder might help wake you up a bit more comfortably my Liege."

Jareth just brooded darkly swimming in his fresh dreams and intense thoughts.
Sarah's peach-like innocence had poisoned Jareth, She had gotten under his skin like no other before her. When they danced in the room he had built for her, just trying to fulfill her dreams. He had found something more, been taken into more than just the dance, watching her cross the ballroom looking for him, in the dress and jewelry she had been more breathtaking then when she had wandered his Labyrinth corridors. He was haunted by her scent, her eyes, her voice, her everything, Sarah's everything that made her Sarah Williams the girl who broke the goblin kings heart, oh why had he let her under skin? And yet he knew he would again and again let her have her way, he was tired ….. he didn't think he could live with in or with out her expectations.

Squelpin's gravelly voice finally pulled Jareth to the top of his miserable musings.
The fae king had gotten to the point he didn't know what was real and what was not, he was constantly going in and almost drowning in his misery over Sarah.
The goblin attendant accompanied the fae he worried about into the main castle kitchen.
Then the goblin made the king a plate with thing's Jareth could peck at because most likely he'd be in owl form to go get the nightmares out of his system.
Sure enough, as he turned plate in hand to set it on the table, the shifting was already happening, he picked up the now owl and held him close and then set him down by the plate. This seemed to be the only form that the fae would eat or take any real interaction in.

After eating more then was expected the goblin looked at his master and stated calmly,
"My liege go, fly but return whole. Stop wasting away find her and become who you were born to be...I cannot, none of us, your kingdom cannot be with out their king." The owl flew off with so much as a noise. the only proof he'd just been there was a single feather and a couple of droppings, Squelpin just shook his head and cleaned up after Jareth's minor mess. His Majesty was truly an animal when he shifted all basic instinct with nothing of the fae thoughts and and actions, basically driven by the last thoughts of a fevered fae king. Tho Jareth was not the first fae nobility to be affected by a human, 100 human years prior the 7 realms had been rocked by High King Oberon's wife Titania taking a human lover with a donkey's head. Later It had been discovered that fae magic had been at the root of the choice, fae magic and jealously. But Titania was never the same after that. And when bottom who was the donkey headed man's name died she mourned him as she would have King Oberon himself.

The same fever now affected Jareth to his very core. The fae instinct knew where to find her, the same place she had been since high school, she was training to be a veterinarian. She loved animals and Jareth was a wounded animal, maybe not on the outside but very very much on the inside. But that would change soon enough.
He flew like he'd never flown before, he'd been this way so many times, but he'd never been so undone, so broken. Owl mind, fae heart, his wings made their own rhythm as he flew the only thought in his mind was fly, fly, soar ... just don't ever stop flying.

It was snowing hard at the campus that Sarah was getting her book training from. She was finishing up the last school year and was going to be opening her own clinic as soon as she payed off her student loans and save up enough money for that clinic. The weather channels had issued a county wide warning of heavy snow and power outages, due to this all the student were being ushered out early in hopes that everyone could get home before it got any worse weather wise. Bundling her self up she headed out the door, she knew she was in for a walk, by habit she always parked in the back of the campus parking lot because she enjoyed walking by the Japanese arborium with it rose garden mazes. As she walked back slowly despite the cold and the heavy falling snow she smiled and wandered past her car and into the maze. It looked like a dream the way the snow sparkled in the moonlight, tugging on deeper buried memories. She got to the center of the maze and looked up the snow cascading all around her, silently beautiful.

Closing her eyes she allowed her self a silent memory of a moment that was perfect before it had become scary. Sarah could almost hear music, could almost feel the dress on her skin again and she unconsciously shivered. The magic was so strong and so alive all around her, that moment held magic that was equal to 1/2 of the goblin kingdom. She'd held on to that little moment because he'd given her the dream she wanted, a moment of beauty that she had yearned for from afar. He'd seen into her teenage deep desires and had granted them...anything after that moment she wouldn't think about. Just the beginning, seeing him dressed so regally a prince ... no a King, that had wanted to dance with just her. She saw him approach and her heart skipped a beat then he looked into her eyes and put his arms gently around her to dance, he serenaded her as they waltz around the room and truly nothing else existed around them. Outside of Sarah there was a lot of magic building up til it was a beacon of light shooting straight up high in the air. The moment his song ended in her mind she clamped down tight on the memory and buried it deep. Slowly reopening her eyes she smiled sadly and walked out of the maze and back to her car. Almost all the magic that had poured from her had been sucked back in, only a little lingered in the center of the maze and trailed behind her.

After she started up her car, she put chains on her tires "better safe then sorry" especially since it was sticking in alot of places in the campus parking lot. Heading out she drove slowly and normally it would take 20 mins to get home but the roads were worse then she had expected. The little magic flowing out of her was beaconing again and I was calling someone who was closer then Sarah would have ever expected. 45 mins later she was still trudging her car thru the ever falling ever thickening snow, finally she saw her small yellow house, It was comfortable with 2 two bedrooms separated by a bathroom, a sun-room, a living room with an actual fireplace, a kitchen and small dinette downstairs and a small upstairs with a long hallway off the stairs that led to a 1/2 bathroom and a room at the back. The house had been made in the 40's you could tell by the tile, carpets and the hideous wallpaper but even that she liked. No worries or stress, just herself and a beautiful male beta named after him. When she had gotten the fish it was because he was for lack of a better word Kingly. He looked like deep blue crushed velvet with his fins fading into a lighter jewel blue that reminded her of ruffles and lace the very tips were black and his back fin was silver. And he loved to admire himself, he was also an exceedingly vain a picky fish, she went thru 10 different bottom coverings for his circular tank. Finally he'd accepted sheer opalescent crystal orbs of slightly different sizes, after that she started calling him your majesty.

Parking her car as close to the driveway as possible, the snow was too much for the car to get thru, she grabbed her bag, keys and phone. Locking up the car she ran to the house, stomping off snow and cold inside on the mat she peeled of layers on the way to the bathroom, a nice hot bath and a cup of coco would warm her right up. She'd light the fireplace when she got out of the bath. Putting the kettle on would give her 20 mins to warm up so shower was the quicker thought. Sighing she resigned herself to a lengthy relaxing bath tomorrow when she had a nice roaring fire. Content with her game plan she hopped into the shower, completely oblivious of the magic flowing thru her house and up the chimney in beacon style.
