This is my own invention from between the chapters "Almanzo Goes Away" and "The Night Before Christmas" from the book These Happy Golden Years

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters. They belong to the brilliant author Laura Ingalls Wilder.

"What in thunderation do you want Manzo?! Can't a man get any sleep!"

"Well if you don't want to be awake when we get up to the house, that is alright with me. I just thought it would be nice if you weren't drooling when Mother and Father come out to greet us."

"Oh! What time is it? I thought you were going to stop for the night?"

"I thought about stopping, but realized how close we were to home and decided to keep going. I rested the horses for awhile and we've been going at a pretty slow pace….Oh, and it is nearly 5 am. Mother and Father will both be awake and by now and have seen us."

"Aren't you tired?"

"A bit, but I've got a lot on my mind right now…"

Laura…her sister….Roy…..Laura….

"Anything you want to talk about?"

"Naw, it isn't that important. I have just got a few things to sort out in my mind and the quiet of the night was as good as any time for thinking."

"If you're sure…"

"If I need you for anything, I know where you are."

Missing the one you love most likely is not the best thing to talk to you about right now Royal. Especially considering what I found out recently.

"Royal! Almanzo! We were not expecting you yet. What a surprise! We thought a letter would have reached us before you two did."

"We didn't bother sending a letter Father. We knew we would travel faster than it anyway and decided it was best to simply come as asked rather than send any letters. Especially considering neither of us wanted to disobey your request to come earlier than planned."

"Wise decision. Well let's not just stand out here. I am sure your mother will want to greet you both properly, as well as feed you as only she feels she can."

"Ah….Mother's breakfasts….Sorry Monzo, even your pancakes just do not compete with Mother's, well, anything food related."

"The idea that someone else has to fill that bottomless-pit you call a stomach is alright with me."

I suppose I should ask Father why he wanted us to come back so early. Best not to let that hang over our heads.

"We will talk later Almanzo. For now let us just enjoy being together again after so long. Besides, what I have to talk to you about will take longer than we have right now. I am glad you boys made it here so quickly though. From the way the weather feels lately I believe we are going to have snow soon."

"Yes Father."

Yes, I know it has been nearly a year. For that I do apologize. I've been thinking about changing my writing style for this story. Let me know if you think I should or if you like the way I'm writing now. I also apologize for this being so short, I figured that since it had been so long you would rather I put up something rather than wait for a longer chapter.
