It was no later that 6 in the morning when Aubree heard a scream.
Her mother's scream.
Aubree leaped out of bed and ran to her parents' room.
"Everything OK?" asked Aubree.
"I'm going into labor. I need you to watch Amelia for the day. Amanda and Alex have school. Can you maybe bring Amelia with you?"
"Paylor knows you're due. Let me call her. Where's dad?"
"He went out to get a doctor. I'm not sure how long this will take, so..."
Aubree ran over to the phone and dialed President Paylor's number.
"Hi, President Paylor. This is Aubree."
"Hello, Aubree! What's new?"
"My mom just went into labor."
"Oh. So you need to call in sick today?"
"OK. I'll have Katniss cover for you. Congratulations on a new sibling!"
Aubree hung up the phone and ran back to her mom.
"How are you doing?"
"Contractions. Hurt. Badly."
"OK. Dad will be here soon to take you to the hospital. Everything will be fine."
Just at that moment, Aubree's father raced in along with two doctors and a stretcher.
"Everything will be fine, honey. Just stay calm."
"Remember, Alex and Amanda need to be in school by 8. Amelia shouldn't give you much trouble; she's normally a good girl. Just keep her calm. She's so excited about becoming a big sister."
Aubree checked the clock: 6:00 AM.
"All right, Mom. Call when you have the baby."
An hour later, Aubree woke her brother up.
"Good morning, Alex."
"Where's Mom? She usually wakes me up."
"Mom went to the hospital to have the baby."
"What?! She had the baby?!"
"Not had. Is having. She wanted you and Amanda to go to school, but I'll come pick you up when it's born, unless it's before school ends. To be honest with you, I think it will happen within hours."
"Come on. Get dressed, bro."
Aubree went into her sisters' room next. She found Amanda already up and dressed.
"Good morning, Mandy.
"Did you hear what I said to your brother?"
"Mommy's having the baby."
"YAY! Can we go see her?"
"Shh, honey. You'll wake Amelia. We'll see Mommy after school."
"OK. Will you call the school if she has the baby?"
"Maybe. It depends on whether or not she has the baby. Go into the kitchen and I'll be there in a second."
The two girls headed into the kitchen. Aubree made Alex and Amanda breakfast, got them ready, and sent them off to school. Then, she went to go wake up her sister.
"Baby girl, wake up!" said Aubree.
Amelia's pure blue eyes opened.
"She went to have the baby."
Amelia, clearly torn, sat up. She thought, and then said, "I don't want her to have the baby!"
"Because I'm the baby! And if Mama has the baby, she won't love me!"
Aubree pulled her youngest sister into a hug.
"Can I tell you a secret?"
"When Alex was born, I felt the same way you do."
"Yup. And when Mandy was born, Alex felt the same way, and when you were born, Mandy felt the same way."
"Yeah. And do you know what?"
"Mommy still loves all of us the same. And she'll always love us. With another baby, there will be more love to go around. OK?"
"Good. Now let's get ready. We get to spend the WHOLE DAY together!"
Eight hours later...
Aubree and Amelia walked over to the school in the Capitol to pick up their siblings. Actually, Aubree walked. Amelia skipped.
Once they reached the school, Aubree quickly spotted her sister and brother.
"Coming!" yelled Alex. He grabbed his backpack and ran over to his older sister.
"Hi, Alex," said the youngest of the Lune siblings.
"Hi, Amelia. Did you and Aubree have a fun day?"
"Yup! We played, and played, and played..."
Amanda next came over to her siblings.
"Did Mommy have the baby?" asked Amanda, as she tickled her younger sister.
"I'm not sure," replied Aubree. "Dad called me and said to bring you three to the hospital after school, but I'm not sure what that means exactly."
"Let's go, then!" exclaimed Amelia.
The four set out on their way to the hospital. Once they got there, Aubree stepped up to the front desk.
"Aubree Lune. Here to see Alice Lune."
"Follow me," said a nurse. She led the four kids down the hall into a room. Their father was waiting outside.
"Did she give birth yet?"
"Yes, kids. Go in quietly, your mother is very tired."
The kids tiptoed in.
"Mama?" said Amelia timidly. "Are you in there?
"Yes, honey. I'm here."
The four approached the bed.
"How are you feeling?" asked Aubree.
"Baby just came out an hour ago, so I'm a bit numb. Do you want to meet him?"
The four kids nodded.
Alice revealed a little blue bundle from under the covers, where she'd been nursing him.
"This is Aiden."
The most noticeable thing about the baby was his eyes. They were a piercing blue, a beautiful blue.
"His eyes are like mine!" exclaimed Amelia.
"Yes. But most babies have blue eyes. They might change."
"Finally, another boy!" sighed Alex.
"I love him," said Amanda.
Oh, how cute! I love babies.
