Disclaimer: I don't own Yu-Gi-Oh. If I did, Yugi and Rebecca might have been an item (if Joey and Mai can happen, then so can they xD). SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't seen Season 1 then there's a spoiler in this chapter!
Bakura was sitting in the Motos' small living room with a warm blanket draped around his shoulders. He was considerably wet from the rain, and Yugi had fetched one for him immediately. "We wouldn't want you catching a cold," he had said. He had to admit, it was hard to hate Ryou's friends when they were so hospitable all the time.
He looked up to see Atem coming down the stairs. Everything the Pharaoh did had a majestic air to it. He supposed it wasn't on purpose, though. Beneath Bakura's loathing and anger, he knew Atem was one of the most kind-hearted people you could find next to his hikari.
"I'm certainly surprised to see you here," he said with a smile.
"Pharaoh," Bakura greeted him.
Atem sat down on the couch perpendicular to him. "May I ask you a question, Bakura?"
"Go for it."
"If you despise me so much, why do you still call me Pharaoh?"
It seemed like a silly question until Bakura realized he didn't know the answer himself. He had a point. When you don't care for someone the biggest insult is to strip them of their title. So why did he still call him that even after he had asked to be called otherwise? "I don't know," he said after thinking for a minute, "I guess because it carries so much weight and history with it. All the anger and hatred is carried in that one word."
"I see... So you still hate me then?"
Surprisingly, Bakura didn't know how to answer. It was just like what happened when Ryou asked him the same question in the hotel room. He wanted to say yes, but he couldn't. The look in the Pharaoh's eyes was so regretful and his question was so sincere... As impossible as it seemed, his hatred of him was slowly diminishing with every passing minute. His feelings for the Pharaoh hadn't been the same ever since he had apologized to him that night in Hawaii. "Not necessarily," he answered.
Atem smiled, knowing what that truly meant. "Thank you."
"Don't mention it."
"So, you needed to talk to me about something?"
"Oh, yeah." He had gotten so caught up in that revelation that he had almost forgotten what he came for. "You see, it's about Zorc."
Atem raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Zorc?"
"Yes. Lately I've been having these dreams..."
Atem listened attentively as Bakura described his dream to him in full detail. When he got to the part about Anzu, Atem shook his head in understanding. "I see. She was able to dissolve the darkness."
"Yes, but I had the dream again after that and it was back to normal... He doesn't seem to want to let go of his hold on me."
Atem moved from his couch to sit next to him. "Listen, Bakura. I'm going to tell you a story that might make things clearer for you. Do you remember Duelist Kingdom?" Bakura nodded and he continued. "In Yugi's and my final duel against Pegasus, he used the power of the Millennium Eye to read our minds and see what cards we were hiding. To prevent him from seeing our cards, we used this strategy called a mind shuffle, where we switched places whenever he tried to read our minds so that he wouldn't be able to see anything. This process was very strenuous on Yugi, and we almost lost him. He passed out, leaving me vulnerable to Pegasus's Millennium Eye. However, the power of friendship, which Joey, Anzu, and Tristan were sending from the outside, was so powerful that it blocked him from me."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"You see, Bakura, Yugi's friends taught me that friendship is a powerful thing. Zorc has been preying on the loneliness in your heart from the beginning, but now you aren't lonely anymore. Once you realize that, he'll leave you alone forever. When you were asleep, Anzu could probably tell that something was wrong and she went in to help. Friendship dissipates the darkness. Once you accept that you have friends who care about you, Zorc will disappear, never to be heard of again, like it was supposed to be in the first place."
"I..." Bakura didn't know what to say.
"I know you aren't a very social person, and that's understandable. All I'm asking is that you accept us as your friends."
Bakura stood up and walked over to the window. "I'll try."
"We can only help if everyone knows about your dream, so everyone understands what we need to do."
"I'd rather you tell them than me."
"I understand," Atem said. " I'll tell Yugi and we'll have them all come now. The sooner we address this, the better."
"Right..." Bakura murmured.
"This must all be very strange for you..."
"Yes, it is... It's strangely relieving as well, though."
Atem smiled and stood up. "I'm glad you feel that way."
He had begun to climb the stairs when Bakura said, "Anzu might be a bit late."
Atem nodded and began to climb again, but he stopped four stairs up. "Bakura?"
The white haired yami turned to look up at his former nemesis.
"I know it's hard, but don't fight your feelings. Your heart wants what it wants."
Bakura knew exactly what, or rather who, he was talking about. "Thank you, Atem."
The former Pharaoh smiled in response and disappeared up the stairs.
