**** Chapter Twenty One ****

Emily and her mom sat on the living room couch watching daytime TV and sipping on warm coffee. Emily had a blanket around her legs. A plate of sandwiches sat on the table in front of them.

A roar sounded, getting louder as the vehicle neared their house and pulled into the driveway. Emily smiled and looked at her mom, "It's Paige."

Her mom got up, "Stay here. I'll let her in."

Emily heard the muffled sounds of Paige and her mom talking, before they entered the room.

"Morning. Sleep well?"

"It's the afternoon. But yes, and no dreams."

Pam walked in behind Paige, "I just made some coffee, would you like some?"

Paige nodded as she sat down next to Emily, "That'd be nice. Thank you."

Pam returned with a coffee, which Paige accepted. The three of them sat, drinking their coffees and watching TV, laughing occasionally.

"Would you like to stay for dinner?"

Paige turned, surprised. "I'd like that, if it would be okay."

Pam nodded, and Emily whispered something that made Paige struggle to keep in her laughter. "It's pasta."

"Am I missing a joke? Emily did you tell her it was pasta? Have you been telling her that's all I can cook?"

Emily looked at Paige, who could hold her laugh in no more. "No, mom" she lied.

Pam shook her head and leaned over towards Paige. "Trust me, don't listen to her. I can cook more than pasta. You'll see. Have dinner with us more and you can try a whole range of food I can cook."

Emily tried to hold in a laugh, her face going red. Paige was laughing again too, she nudged Emily's arm playfully.

"Hey, arm connected to wrist. Wrist sore."

Paige gave her a puppy dog smile as she mouthed "Sorry baby."

Sitting down for dinner with Pam across from her, and Paige at her right side, Emily struggled to eat her pasta using just her left hand. After dropping several pieces she dropped her fork onto her plate in frustration, letting out a sigh.

"Ugh, how am I supposed to eat like this for 3 weeks?"

Emily looked over to Paige, who was touching the side of her mouth; an indication to Emily that she had pasta sauce on her cheek.

"See, I even have pasta sauce on my face, don't I? I'm like a baby."

Pam gave her a pitying smile, while Paige reached over with a napkin and wiped the sauce off. She sat back, realising what she had done and gave an apologetic look to Pam.

Pam frowned at her. "Paige, you're her girlfriend. I think you do more than wipe sauce of her face when I'm not in the room. You don't need to be so scared around me." She looked at Emily. "Emmy I know it's hard, but you'll learn to use your left hand while your right hand rests. You need to stop using it so it heals quicker. Just take your time with your meals, like you did yesterday."

Emily nodded, "I know. It's just frustrating."

Picking up her fork again, she continued to eat her pasta slowly. When they were finished, Emily and Paige went to her room.

"This is weird, but I kinda wanted to just grab your fork and feed you down there."

Emily laughed, "You don't need to parent me, Paige. I am in my twenties you know."

"I know, but I hate seeing you struggle."

"Three weeks and I get this bandage off and go back to normal."

They sat for a while, talking, until it began to get dark and Paige left to go home and check on her uncle.

A few nights later, Emily's doorbell went as she watched TV. Her mom was out for the day so she had spent most of it curled up on the couch.

Pulling herself up, she walked to the door and opened it to find Paige standing with a big smile on her face.

Emily couldn't help smiling back, "Hi yourself."

Paige grabbed Emily's right hand, "Come on. I want to show you something."

They walked outside and over to Paige's bike, who turned and raised an eyebrow. "Do you wanna do this, or should we take your car?"

Emily considered it, "Um, I think it'd be best to take my car."

Paige nodded. "Sensible option. But I'm driving. You're not doing anything with just one hand."

Emily laughed, "Okay. But where are we going?"

Paige walked towards Emily, "Well, if I told you that it wouldn't be a surprise would it?"

She kissed Emily, who grinned and dipped her head.

"Let me lock up and get my car keys."

After walking back to the house to grab her car keys and lock the door, Emily threw the keys to Paige, who effortlessly caught them. She pressed the button to unlock the car doors and walked to the passengers side, holding the door open and waiting for Emily. Paige then walked to the driver's side and got in, putting the keys into the ignition.

Paige reversed the car and drove towards her uncles, but continued along the road at the side, parking near to the forest.

"Paige, where are we going?" Emily asked, starting to panic. She hoped she would never have to see the forest again.

Paige looked at her and smiled. She got out the car and walked to Emily's side, helping her out. "You'll see. I hope you like it."

Taking Emily's hand, she led her through the trees to the forest.

Walking towards the hut, Emily froze.

"Paige, stop. I don't want to go there."

Squeezing her hand reassuringly, Paige turned to Emily. "It's safe now, Em. Trust me. Nothing is going to happen."

Emily nodded, and they continued to walk.

As they reached the hut, Paige glanced at Emily before opening the door. She pushed it open and walked inside.

Emily stepped unsurely behind her. She looked around, confused. "It's not white."

Paige smiled at her, "Do you like it?"

Emily looked around, letting out a small laugh. The room was lilac. It looked freshly painted. "You painted it?"

Paige nodded. "If it's not white, then those sketches don't make sense. And nothing can happen now."

Emily smiled. Paige painted the walls, just for me.

"Throw those sketches out. And tell me if you start to dream of a purple room okay?"

Emily smiled, letting out a breath as she walked to Paige. "I can't believe you did this for me. Thank you."

Paige shook her head, "No. Thank you. You stopped me making a mistake, a big mistake. And now I want to show you that I'm here for you, whatever you need. I don't want to run away again. I'm here for you. With you. I love you, Em."

Emily smiled, grabbing Paige with her good hand and pulling her near, "I love you, too."

Paige smiled as she leaned in to kiss Emily.

They walked back to the car, hand in hand. Emily was surprised as Paige passed by the car, continuing down the road and round the corner to her uncles' cottage. Paige led Emily down the hallway and to her bedroom.

Walking to the corner and returning, she handed over the black velvet photo album that Emily had given her for her birthday.

Opening the album, Emily was greeted with the photos she had added when she gave the album to Paige.

The next page contained the first photo Paige had taken of her, then one of them kissing, and a few candid ones when they were messing around.

The following page contained the photos they had taken together, the posed ones with the timer. Then there was the one of Emily sleeping. And then the next one, Paige and her tattoo.

Emily grinned and looked at Paige.

"That one's quite artistic actually, you have quite a good eye." Paige turned round, picking up a photo and giving it to Emily, "You said you wanted a copy."

Emily looked down. It was Paige, the photo she had taken. She remembered, and she printed two.

"Now don't put it in your wallet, or show your mom. I don't want everyone to see me like that okay?"

Emily laughed, "Oh trust me, nobody but me is getting to see this."

Paige grinned. "How about we work on filling up the rest of the album?"

Emily smiled, "I'd like that. I'm surprised you didn't delete these photos after your birthday. It wasn't exactly joyful that day."

Paige looked at her, "I'd never delete anything about you. And although it wasn't the happiest birthday i've ever had, I did get to wake up next to you. And having you in my life is enough, no matter if it's good or bad. It's you. Every relationship has rough patches, right? I'll love you forever, through anything."

Emily sighed. "What did I do to deserve you in my life?"

"I ask myself the same question about you all the time. I guess we just got lucky. Anyway, there's something else I want to give you."

Emily watched as Paige turned to pick up a carrier bag from her shelf. She handed the bag to Emily, who opened it and pulled out the contents: Paige's Batman pyjamas.

"Paige, these are yours."

"You suit them better. And besides, it's a way to make sure I'm always with you. Or at least a part of me. Even if I'm not there."

Emily smiled, taking Paige's hand and kissing her. "Thank you."

Paige smiled but shook her head, "Thank you. For making me feel whole again."

She leaned in, touching her nose to Emily's and making her laugh.

"I better get you back home" Paige told her, as they returned to the car and drove back to Rosewood.
