Lenne: Looks like we may start RWTOBT soon.
For now, enjoy.
If there's any errors, I'll fix later. I'm quite sleepy at the moment. Feel free to point them out to make my life easier.
Chapter 11: Threat
I waited outside with Claus and Dad. Every second I questioned if she was going to make it or not.
Why did it have to be her? Why couldn't it be me? I was right there.
Upon hearing the doors open, we all stood up. The head surgeon came out and looked at us reluctantly. We all knew what had already happened.
Dad burst through the doors seeing her lying on the bed. She had a weak smile on her face. Claus and I approached the sides of the bed.
The both of us took her hand.
I called out to her repeatedly.
I heard my name being called, along with a familiar sobbing. I opened my eyes and saw a white light, followed by a white ceiling.
"He's awake, look!" said what seemed to be my brother's voice.
I tried turning my neck. It was a little painful, but I managed to crack the tension enough to feel that I was on a bed. I saw Ness and Claus at my side, and Ninten was in front me.
"Lucas…I'm so glad…" Ness whispered. He dropped his head and gripped my hand tighter.
"…What happened?" I asked them.
"You were hit by a car…" Claus told.
"I was?" I reconfirmed. "How come I didn't notice a car coming though…?"
"I don't know," Claus said. "But at least you're okay. The doctor said that you didn't get any fatal injuries."
"I see…" I said. I looked back at Ness. I saw a couple of tears drop from his hidden face. He tried hard not to cry really loudly.
"Ness…" I called to him.
"I'm so sorry," he told me. "It was my fault you got hurt…I left you alone by yourself. I don't even remember what happened to me until I saw that a car hit you."
"It was a good thing I was near the accident," Ninten told.
"Yeah…thanks, Ninten," Ness said.
"It's no problem," Ninten replied.
The room door behind Ninten opened. A doctor poked half of his body in.
"Officer Ninten, may I talk to you?" he asked.
"Sure," Ninten responded. "I'll be back," he told us. He walked out of the room with the doctor.
"How long am I staying here?" I asked.
"Overnight, just to be safe," Claus answered.
"Overnight…?" I repeated. I looked at the clock above the door to discover it was 1:08 A.M.
"Don't worry, I'm staying here with you," Ness said.
I smiled. "Thanks." He caressed my hair as I laid back in the bed. In a moment, I saw Claus retreat to a nearby seat. He looked so thankful that I was okay. I guess he didn't want to lose the last family he had.
I didn't want to die either. I still had so many things to do in life, and I needed to spend more of my time with Ness.
Now that I think of it, what happened before I ended up here?
I saw them both kiss, I know I did. Or was I just dreaming about it? Maybe the whole party was just a dream of mine…
No, it felt real for sure…
…So if it was real? Then Ness wouldn't be so worried about me right now. Something must have happened to him that made him kiss that guy. Maybe someone pushed him? Or, he could have tripped?
…Well, it doesn't really matter much for now. I focused on getting better instead.
Claus stood up and walked over to the door. "I'm going to go find some snacks or something. Want anything?"
"If you can," Ness answered. "I'll eat whatever."
Claus left the room, but Ninten entered right after he left. He waved at us as he walked in.
"Anything happen?" Ness questioned.
"Nothing really," answered Ninten. "How are you feeling, Lucas?"
"I feel fine," I told him.
"Can you look after him for a bit?" Ness asked. "I need to use the bathroom."
"Of course," Ninten said.
Ness kissed my cheek before standing up. "I'll be right back, okay?" I nodded at him, and he walked past Ninten out the room. The door closed, and it was just me and Ninten.
Ninten walked to my left side and picked up something off a counter that I didn't notice until now. He was holding my necklace. I subtly moved my hand to feel my neck, and it was gone, of course, but now in Ninten's hands. He opened the locket and looked at the picture inside.
"We've been through quite a lot in so little time," Ninten commented.
"Have we?" I responded.
"It's only been about two weeks since you started living here, and you're already in the hospital." He weakly chuckled.
"I guess," I said.
He put my necklace down on the counter. Then, he turned to me, with a somewhat serious look on his face.
"What's wrong?" I asked him.
He looked down to the floor, as if hesitant. He closed his eyes, and then looked at me. "You were drugged."
"Huh?" I sounded.
Ninten nodded. "You were drugged," he repeated. "The doctors tested your blood. They found a drug in your body that weakened your perception and mental ability. It's not surprising that you wouldn't notice a car coming towards you."
"How was I drugged?" I asked him.
"No idea," he answered. "My best guess would be that you ingested something that had the drug."
I took those words very seriously, and suddenly remembered last night's events. I was clear-headed until Nick handed me and Ness drinks. It was after that I felt groggy. He must have put some kind of drug in my drink that I didn't notice. It must also be why Ness kissed him; he was probably drugged too, and couldn't tell what was going on.
"Huh…" I responded.
"Got anything you wanna tell me?" Ninten asked.
It felt like he was trying to compel me to tell him about Nick. I didn't want to tell him that Nick was dangerous. Otherwise, Nick might come after him too, and probably my brother as well. I didn't want to risk them getting hurt.
"Not that I can think of..." I answered.
Ninten grinned, "Okay then." He began walking away from me. "I'm going to go do some paperwork. I'll be back as soon as I can, okay?"
"All right," I responded. Ninten left the room.
I was left alone, staring at the ceiling. Being tired and bored, I closed my eyes and tried to sleep. I couldn't, however, because I was too focused on thinking about Nick and his intentions. It was no doubt that he was trying to separate me and Ness, but for what reason?
I heard the room door open. I pictured Ness, Claus, or Ninten walking inside and heading near me. I lifted my head and opened my eyes.
It was not any of them at all.
"Hello, Lucas," he said.
"Nick," I responded. "What're you doing here?"
"Just visiting a friend, what else?" Nick smiled. "You know, I didn't expect you to get in an accident," he told.
I cut his chitchat. "I know you drugged me."
"Oh, really?" Nick questioned. "That makes this easier for me then."
"Why drug me?" I asked him.
Nick chuckled. "You're my test subject."
"I figured an innocent, naïve boy like you would be the perfect person to test my new drugs on. And by the looks of what happened—"he rubbed his lips with his finger, remembering last night's incident, "—I'd say they worked well, even though they were weaker than I had originally made them."
"I'm not some guinea pig," I told him. "And neither is Ness, so just stop it."
"Oh, but Lucas, it's too late. I'm already quite far ahead in the development of my new products. And I still need to see their effects."
"So why use me and not someone or something else?"
"Well, to be frank, I hate you." He looked at me with disgust. "I was having a nice college life trying to find ways to approach Ness, until you came running along. I had to get rid of you somehow, of course."
"So you want to get rid of me just to get Ness back?"
"All in all, yes." Nick pulled out his phone and checked it, and then made an evil smile. "But since it looks like it's impossible to win Ness' heart now…I may as well just get rid of you both. Maybe I'll kill Ness first—"
"No!" I blurted. "Just…just leave us alone!"
Nick laughed. "Oh Lucas, you're too funny." He walked over and grabbed my chin, pulling me towards him as he leaned down. "Cute too; it's sad to see you like this."
I shrugged him off. He sighed.
"Well, we could make a deal," Nick said.
"What kind of deal?" I asked.
"Oh, just a simple thing," he answered. "Test one more drug for me and I'll leave you both alone forever. I can move to a new town, if you'd like."
"And if I refuse?" I questioned.
"I'd keep interfering in your life, of course." Nick pulled out a small jar of dark-colored pills. "See this?" he said. "These are actually some very dangerous pills. They're odorless, and flavorless. But, add one of these in anything and you're bound to die very quickly. All I really have to do is give Ness a drink, and he's done for. And when I'm done with him…" he used his index finger to motion a slicing across his neck, "…I'd come after you next."
"You'd get caught easily though," I told.
"True, but all I really have to do is kill both you and Ness, and I'm happy going to jail. I don't really fear prison, by the way."
His poker face did show he wasn't scared of going to jail just for murdering two people he didn't like. I cringed in my bed, unable to find a good solution to this problem.
"So, do we have a deal?" Nick asked.
I didn't want to risk a death of anyone. If there was a chance we'd all live, I'd take it.
"Fine, deal," I answered.
"Wonderful." Nick began to walk away. "I believe you are being released here until the bright morning, correct?" He turned back to me. "Leave Ness' house at midnight and stay on the sidewalk. I'll pick you up. If you don't show up within five minutes after midnight, then the deal's off."
"I'll be there, don't worry."
"Good. I'll see you later, then." Nick smiled at me and then left the room.
I stared at the door that Nick had left through. I put myself in a very dangerous situation. But I had no choice. It was for everyone's sake. Ness was going to be killed as long as Nick was still around. He protected me many times, but now it's my turn to help him.
