A/N: A brief take on why Jane went solo so much this episode and why he didn't force his way into the Volker case when he so obviously wanted to.

He wished he could help her, but he knew she'd never let him. After all, he never let her. So, he watched her closely, checking in without putting her on the defensive. Most of all, he worked the case alone as much as possible, wanting to leave the rest of the team free to help her since he couldn't. Unless she asked.
He called her in at the end because he couldn't do it alone. Neither can you, he thought desperately, let me help.
Three people dead, she finally said the words he'd longed for, "Jane, I need your help."
