4. What a night.

It was Friday afternoon and I was incredibly late for Jason's tutoring at the Library. I impatiently looked through the bus windows for any signs of the library building. I had spent the night before trying to figure out how I was going to 'tutor' Jason on what he missed. Therefore, I decided to take a ten-minute nap before departing for the tutoring and somehow it ended up extending to forty minutes. I had rushed out of the house and caught the bus just before its departure.

After a few minutes the bus pulled up a few metres away from the library. I got off the bus hurriedly. I looked towards the entrance and saw Jason resting his back on the hand rails with his hands in his jean pockets. He was wearing a black short sleeved shirt and dark blue jeans. His hair looked a bit messy, probably from the wind outside. Good messy though. The whole day I had tried to avoid him like plague. However, I could not avoid him any longer.

If I helped him, maybe I would find sooner rather than later why he ambushed me that night. Maybe he was drunk or even better, on drugs. Or maybe he was just mentally crazy. That made so much sense.

I walked towards Jason. He raised his head as soon as he heard me approaching.

"Hey Mary-Kate." He said a small smile forming on his lips along with a dimple on his right cheek.

"Hey." I replied looking around him for his books. "Where are your books?"

"Oh, the library is closed. Apparently they are having some meeting."

"Are you kidding me?" I asked while walking towards the entrance.

Indeed, there was a sign in front of the glass door saying "Library closed for a special occasion. Sorry for any inconveniences"

I could feel my body shaking with anger. Why? Where else would I be able to help this child with his work?

"So, I guess today is off then?" Jason asked looking at me impatiently.

I hummed in response. I was half disappointed yet half happy. A thought immediately popped in my mind.

"How about we do it at my house?" I asked, regretting opening my mouth soon after. Where did the idea come from?

Stupid, stupid Mary-Kate! Please don't let him have heard what I said. If he did hear, please say no, please say no.

"Sure, that sounds awesome." Jason replied with a smile on his face.

"But we have to catch the bus." I said abruptly, this was my chance to stop him from coming. "There is no bus until like seven." I whined.

"Oh, we could go in my car." Jason suggested.

He has a car? God, why can't you have mercy on me?

I had hoped that was the end of it.

"Sure." I said unsure of myself.

"This way." Jason motioned leading the way.

I followed closely behind him cursing at myself for suggesting that we go to my house to do the tutoring. Jason suddenly stopped. I ran straight onto his back.

"Are you alright?" Jason asked turning to look at me.

Wow! His eyes! Azure like the blue sky on a sunny day. I think I had fallen in love with his eyes. Jason cleared his throat, making me snap out of my trance, again.

"Get in." He said gesturing towards a black BMW M3.

All I could say was wow. How did a high school student own a car like this? It was a car of wealth and prestige. Jason casually made his way to the other side of the car.

He paused for a second before asking, "Are you going to get in?"

I slowly nodded while opening the door. I slowly slid in the passenger seat, careful not to rip anything. The car had the "new car" feel. Leather seats, clean dashboard and gleam everywhere. I quickly closed the door as Jason started the car.

"Where to?" He asked before taking off.

"Go down this road and turn left at the intersection."

Jason did not reply. The car roared and started towards the direction I told Jason.

After a few minutes, Jason pulled up into my drive way. I quickly got out of the car while searching my bag for the house keys. As I was fumbling in my bag, I heard the front door open. I quickly looked towards the door, my mum stood there with a frown on her face.

"Oh, it's you. I thought you were finishing late." Mum said looking at me and then Jason who was right behind me. "Who's this?"

"This is Jason. The person I am helping with Chem." I said gesturing towards Jason.

"Oh, hello darling." Mum said. "My name is Jane. I'm Mary-Kate's mum."

"Oh, it is nice to meet you Mrs -" Jason paused not sure.

"Just call me Jane." Mum said with a grin on her face. "Come on in."

"Thank you." I heard Jason say behind me as soon as we entered the house.

"The library is closed, so I thought we would just do the work here." I proclaimed shifting my bag strap on my shoulder. "Is that alright?"

"Yeah, it's fine." Mum said straightening invisible wrinkles on her skirt. "I'll be in the living room."

"Ok." I said turning myself towards Jason. "Let's go."

"Oh by the way, Jason darling, are you staying for dinner?" My mum asked with a smile on her lips.

I looked at my mum disapprovingly. I did not even want to help Jason, let alone eat dinner with him.

"Please say no," I chanted in my head.

"Sure. If that's alright with you." Jason replied.

Ugh! Why did she have to ask him to have dinner with us?

"It is fine! That's why I asked. Are you allergic to anything?" Mum continued with her questioning.

Jason shook his head before mum disappeared into the kitchen.

I rolled my eyes and started towards my study room, which is on the other side of the house. It was supposed to be a guest room, but we never had guests so I used it as a study room. When we entered the room, I saw that I left my other books scattered on the table. I quickly piled them on the floor before taking my chemistry books from my bag.

"Here we are." I said to Jason, while gesturing on the table.

"Thank you." He said placing his books on the table. "So, um where am I going to sit?"

I looked at the desk and there was only one chair there. How did I forget that I only occupied the room?

"I'll go and get you one." I quickly reassured him and ran out of the room towards the dining room.

I grabbed one of the chairs from the dinner table. When I got back to the room, Jason was fiddling with his cell phone. Texting maybe?

"Are you ready?" I asked as I placed the chair in front of Jason.

"Yes." He replied while taking a sit next to me. I took his text book, careful not to touch him. "I will tell you what we have covered so far."

Jason nodded.

"We have done the history of chemistry, so finding out how it began, who discovered the elements. Stuff like that." I paused while flipping the pages to the next chapter. "And in chapter two, we looked at what is inside an atom; and now we are up to chapter three looking at the periodic table and why it is important."

"Good. It doesn't seem like a lot." Jason said and I nodded in reply.

"So, read and answer the questions at the end of each chapter." I said getting my own homework.

"Okay." Jason smiled and turned his head towards the Chemistry book.

I watched as his eyes scanned the words on the page. His lips moved a little as he read. They looked so plump and dark pink. I wanted to know how they felt. I looked at his beautifully shaped jaw. It looked strong and beautiful. There were no other words to describe him other than beautifully handsome.

A smirk formed on Jason's lips making me turn my attention back to my book. He must have noticed that I was staring at him. What the hell Mary-Kate? You need to snap out of it.

I felt my cheeks heating up. I pressed my cold palms on my cheeks to make the heat go away, but it only warmed my palms. I cannot. I kept on chanting in my head.

"Are you OK?" Jason's voice brought me back to reality.

Had I been speaking loudly?

"Um, yes." I said removing my hands from my cheeks and turning my attention to the book in front of me.

I could not like him.

"No it's not three D." I explained for the fifth time. "Four S comes before three D."

"What? I don't understand at all." Jason confessed with a frustrated sigh.

It had been more than two hours and Jason still could not grasp the order of energy levels in atoms. He was trying to figure out what the electron figuration for Iron was but he thought that three D came before four S. I know you must think that it is a long time to complete a full chapter and half of another chapter, but with me having to explain some things to Jason over and over again, it took a while.

"OK, it's been more than an hour; I think it's time we stop for today." I said looking at Jason waiting for an answer.

"OK." He said looking in my eyes smiling. Once again I could not look away. "You have beautiful eyes." He whispered.

What the hell?

I looked at Jason with a confused expression.

It would not have come as a shock if someone else had told me. Not only did he frighten me, he gave off the deviant or playboy vibe. He had the looks, the words, lavish car and everything that can make any girl melt and immediately fall in love.

"Um – thanks?" I said with a confused expression.

I turned towards my books and started stacking them on top of each other. I felt something warm slip on top of my hand – Jason's hand. I looked down at our hands and then back at Jason; he still looked deeply in my eyes. Fear started running through my veins. I tried to jerk my hand away from his but it only made him hold onto it harder. His hand was cold, so cold that chills tingled up my arm and down to my toes. I could feel butterflies forming in my stomach, not from love but nervousness and fright. He held his gaze with my eyes making my heart pound really fast and my body shake.

What was he doing now? Was he going to finish my life now? My breath started become short and sharp. I could not breathe. I just stayed in that position, scared for my life. Flashes of how he ambushed me that night started blurring my vision.

Maybe I should not have invited him into my house. I was such an idiot. Now he was going to finish whatever he wanted to do that night. I was finally going to die now.

I closed my eyes and chanted, "Please don't hurt me!"

"Wow, are you OK?" Jason asked again.

I opened my eyes to meet his sorrowful blue eyes.

"I'm not going to tell anyone I promise!" I whispered with tears falling from my eyes, "Please don't hurt me."

"What are you talking about?" Jason asked with a small smile on his lips. "I know you're not going to tell anyone."

"So you're not going to hurt me?" I sobbed.

"Pshh, no!" Jason laughed letting go of my hand. "I am not that stupid."

What the?

"I just wanted to say thank you." Jason continued.

What? Why does one have to hold another's hand to just say thank you?

"For helping me and not telling anyone about…"

"Oh, its fine." I laughed nervously while wiping invisible tears from my eyes.

"I'm really sorry! I did not mean any harm to you that night." Jason paused while running his hand through his hair, "I don't know what gotten into me."

"It's fine." I said, unsure of myself.

It wasn't fine. As long as he was near me, I was going to be scared all the time.

"Thank you so much for forgiving me, Mary-Kate." Jason said with a small smile on his face.

Forgive? I would not say it was forgiveness, I just disliked people who begged for forgiveness when they knew that what they did would haunt the person's life forever.

"It's alright." I said forcing a smile once again.

"So can we start over again?" Jason suggests. "Like none of that ever happened."

Should I? Can I trust him?

I heard the study room door opening. Thanks mum for the save.

"Are you guys done?" Mum asked poking her head in the room.

"Um, yes." I replied slowly.

"Good, because dinner is ready." Mum smiled while walking out of the room.

"Shall we go?" I asked jumping out of my seat.

"Sure, I'm starving." He said rubbing his stomach.

We exited the room and made our way towards the dining room.

What did Jason really want from me? I thought.

When we entered the dining room, I saw three plates arranged on the dining table.

"You can put your books over there." I said to Jason, pointing on one of the sofas in the corner of the dining room.

I went to the table and sat down at my usual spot and then Jason came and joined me on the table but, he sat opposite to me. Mum entered carrying a medium bowl.

"Oh, you are already here." Mum said placing the bowl on the table and looked at me with a happy smile. "I made spaghetti Bolognese, your favourite!"

I smiled as big as I could and said. "Thank you mum."

I saw Jason smiling from the corner of my eye as mum sat down on my right.

"Ok, let us say grace." Mum paused and looked at Jason. "I'm not sure if you do this at your home, but I hope it's alright."

"It's fine." Jason said smiling. He looked at me and put his palms together and closed his eyes. I did the same and waited for mum to start the prayer.

"For the food we are about to eat dear Lord, we would like to thank you, amen."

"Amen." Jason and I said in unison.

"Everyone dig in." Mum said passing a dishing spoon to Jason for the spaghetti.

"Thank you. " He said starting to pour some spaghetti in his plate.

Why does he seem so nice now?

Looking at him now you would think that he was an angel, but deep inside he was a vicious creature that terrorised young girls at night.

How was I supposed to start over again when the image of his deep red eyes were still engraved in my brain?

"He is the one who carried you to the sickbay." A little voice said in my head.

He did.

But that was so he could gain easy access to me. I could not trust him. I could not trust a monster like him.

Why did I even agree to Mr Bradley request?

"Mary?" Mum's voice snapped me back to reality.

"Mhmm?" I said averting my attention to mum.

"Are you alright?" Mum asked, making me look at her before looking at Jason.

They both wore worried expression. What did I do? I felt a warm hand being pressed against my forehead.

"Your head is a bit warm." Mum said taking her hand away. "You must be catching a cold. I told you to wear lots of layers this morning."

"I am fine." I replied before taking the bowl of spaghetti from mum. "Thank you."

"If you say so honey." Mum said turning towards her food. "So Jason what do your parents do?" Mum asked chewing on a piece of lettuce.

"My dad owns a company in Romania and my mum recently got a job here as a doctor at the Amoris Hills hospital." Jason said stabbing a cucumber with his fork. I watched him as he placed it in his mouth and chewed on it slowly. The way his lips moved made me think of what they would feel like against mine.

Seriously Mary-Kate? I thought you did not want anything to do with that deviant. I shook my head furiously before I was brought back by mum's ridiculous question.

"Oh, so your parents are separated?" Mum asked with a sympathetic expression on her face.

I looked at Jason curiously waiting for an answer. He frowned a little before replying. "No, they are not. It's just that mum couldn't find a stable job in Romania."

Mum and I sighed in relief.

I was shocked at how much relief flooded into me.

"Well that's good. I think we should meet your mum. I'm sure Mary would like to know all about being a doctor." Mum said looking at me smiling.

Jason turned towards me smiling. "I think mum would love that. She always talks about how great it will be if more women become doctors."

I faked a smile.

If only his mum knew what a creep he was.

After dinner Jason announced he was going home. It was around eight o'clock. He said his goodbyes to mum.

"I'm going to walk Jason out." I said to mum.

Why? I did not know.

"Ok." She answered from the kitchen.

Jason opened the door and a rush of cold wind came into the house. I grabbed a jacket from the coat rack and quickly put it on.

"You should stay inside. It is cold." Jason said before walking out.

Why did he care if I was cold or not?

"Good night Mary-Kate." Jason called before disappearing into his car.

I watched him as he drove all the way to the end of the street and turned left.

I sighed before closing the door.
