A/N: This was written for the Sad Disney Songs Challenge. I saw the challenge, knew what song I wanted to use and prayed that it was on the list. I think it took me all of about half an hour to write this, as my brain already knew what I wanted to do and how it wanted the little story to be written. I knew it would be short...just 648 words in the story itself...but it still evoked strong emotions as I wrote it...This was the first of my stories that made me cry as I was writing it. If you want to listen to a really great version of it, go to YouTube and look for Baby Mine by Allison Krauss.

The woman cradled her precious bundle close to her chest as she made herself comfortable in the rocking chair; the chair had been her mother's and she had been rocked to sleep in it when she was the same age as her child. She began to hum a song she had heard many years before; she couldn't remember where she had heard it, but it stuck in her mind. It was a song she knew she'd want to sing to her own child, when she had one; she began to sing softly, trying not to wake the toddler in her arms.

Baby mine, don't you cry

Baby mine, dry your eyes

Rest your head close to my heart

Never to part, baby of mine

The child shifted slightly, rearranging his head on his mother's arm and making his black hair even more messy than it normally was. His mother smiled and pressed a soft kiss to said hair, enjoying the feeling of her baby, safe in her arms as usual; she tucked a strand of long red hair behind one ear and began to softly sing again.

Little one when you play
Don't you mind what they say
Let those eyes sparkle and shine
Never a tear, baby of mine

The little boy fussed and she gently calmed him back down. This was the time of night that she loved more than anything; holding her baby close and rocking him to sleep, making sure that all was right with his world.

If they knew sweet little you
They'd end up loving you too
All those same people who scold you
What they'd give just for
The right to hold you
From your head to your toes
You're not much, goodness knows
But you're so precious to me
Cute as can be, baby of mine

Lily Potter smiled gently as she placed her son, Harry, into his cot and smoothed some of the hair away from his eyes; she would always remember this exact moment, how innocent and how peaceful he looked.

A loud crash from downstairs warned her that all was not as peaceful as she had supposed.

"Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off!" (2)

The dark haired man cradled his precious bundle close to his chest as he settled himself more comfortably in the rocking chair he had rescued from the crumbling remains of his parents' home. This time of night was his special time with his daughter; he loved cradling the warm body close to his, making sure that his child was safe and happy.

This, their night-time ritual, was something that he had begun from the first day they had brought her oldest brother home from St. Mungo's; no one else intruded on this time...it was understood that this was Harry's time alone with his children. He smoothed a lock of her reddish hair away from her eyes and he quietly began to sing a song he vaguely remembered, but didn't know where he'd heard it.

Baby mine, don't you cry

Baby mine, dry your eyes

Rest your head close to my heart

Never to part, baby of mine

1- Baby Mine is from the Disney movie "Dumbo", from 1941.

2- The quote is from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

This story can follow canon...or not...it depends upon your tastes. I wrote it so that it would fit either way.
