"Hannah, what happened? Your face!"
"Peeves." I grumbled as an excuse. What had actually happened was my problem and Susan didn't need to know.
After my patrol all could think about was getting into bed. Lost in my thoughts, I reached the fourth floor but I was stopped when I heard the creak of a door. Drawing my wand, I muttered a quick Lumos. Classroom 4B's door was open. I raised my wand a little higher.
"Prefect, show yourselves," I said clearly. When nothing happened, I pushed it open with my other arm.
"Hello?" I called, stepping further into the classroom and scanning the darkness. All of a sudden someone disarmed me, locking the door. My wand fell somewhere to my left and I whirled around.
"Who's there?" I said, my whole body was tense. My brother stepped out from the shadows.
"What the fuck, Daniel?" I snapped, "You scared the crap out of me."
"Having fun prefect patrolling?" he asked. I rolled my eyes and ignored him, I headed towards where I'd heard my wand land. He grabbed my arm as I passed him.
"What are you doing Dan?"
"I asked you a question."
The way he spoke made me nervous. "I'll happily take points from your house. Let go."
I tried to make my voice threatening but it didn't come out the way I wanted it to.
"I bet you'd love that. I bet you'd love to take points or put me in detention so Mum can tell me how I should be bloody perfect just like you."
"Dan," I began.
"Don't fucking interrupt," he hissed, "I could get O's at NEWT level and no one would care because you'll come about with more amazing grades at OWL level than I did. Then Mum will ask me why I didn't get as many OWLs as Hannah?"
"That's not my fault, you know I don't tell Mum to do that."
"It is. You get better grades and you're a prefect too." he persisted. "You'll do anything to show me up."
"I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done, stop being so anal about this," I retorted, "I'm not going to stop working hard just so you can stop feeling bad about yourself."
His fist connected with my cheek knocking me to the floor. I gasped in pain, cupping my hand to my face.
I couldn't even look up at him, my own brother. He'd said things that hurt before but this was something he'd never done before. Never.
"You talk about regrets, well I won't regret anything I do from now on either Hannah, nothing." he warned, slamming the door shut.
"They really need to get rid of Peeves!" Susan grimaced and I nodded, as I thought about last night.
Daniel had said those last words as a promise.
