Uhura dropped her earpiece, again, and let loose a curse word. One of Gaila's brows quirked up. She was used to Uhura's occasional foul mouth, but this was a juicy one. Plus, it was in Vulcan, no less.
"Wow, Uhura. That's a new one for you. Something got your goat?"
Uhura sighed, "I'm worried about Spock. The destruction of Vulcan has hit him hard, and although he's covering, he's not dealing very well. I'm afraid he's either going to shut down or snap, again. I love him so much, Gaila! I hate to see him hurting like this."
Gaila sighed and gazed off into the distance, "Yeah, I know what you mean. I love Kirk like that, too."
Uhura laughed bitterly, "I don't think so, Gaila! You wouldn't know real love if it jumped up and bit you."
Gaila scowled. She was angry, now, "I would, too! Who are you to tell me about love, miss high-and-mighty! Look who you chose to love: a Vulcan. Good luck, there!"
Uhura was furious, "You don't choose love, love chooses you! As if you would know, you green-skinned bouncy ball! At least I don't go mooning after someone only to turn my back the instant they hurt my feelings. Plus, I don't have the mistaken idea that 'I-like-you' means 'Let's-go-bounce-the-bedsprings'. Love is work, Gaila, and takes time! Not that you'd give any man that luxury."
Gaila put her hands on her hips, "Where's the fun in that? Isn't love supposed to be good, Uhura? Isn't it supposed to make you happy? Huh?"
Uhura shook her head, "No, Gaila, it isn't! It can, but that's not it's purpose. It's purpose is to make you value someone so much that you would do anything for that person! It's for them not you! Hopefully, you find someone that loves you that much, too. That doesn't happen all the time, however. That part of it can really bite, but real love is selfless, Gaila. It's not me-me-me mooning!"
Gaila crossed her arms, "I don't want to be hurt. Why should I stay where I'm gonna get hurt. I'm not gonna stay around if things get nasty, Uhura. Why should I?"
Uhura threw up her arms in frustration, "Then you're never going to find love! All you'll find is bounce-the-bedsprings. Love has teeth, Gaila. It bites, and bites hard! It can tear you to ribbons! But, it is so worth it. It's the best thing in the world! In the end, it beats bounce-the-bedsprings hands down. Lust doesn't hold your hand when you're sad or ill. It doesn't stay around when you're old. It doesn't fill your heart. So you better wise up, Gaila, or as pretty as you are, you are going to wind up all alone and wondering what happened."
Gaila's eyes softened, "So you don't think Kirk is worth it?"
Uhura sighed, "He could be, if he grows up. But, Gaila, you have to understand something. He's caught the bug, and if I read him properly, he's going to have it bad. Even if you get together with him, there's something that's likely to always be more important than you. If you can't live with that, give it up right now."
Gaila tilted her head, "What could be so important?"
Uhura gestured all around her, "Any captain's first love. It claims his heart if it doesn't claim his life. His ship! In this case, the Enterprise."
Gaila nodded, smiling, "Ohhh. Well, there's no competition for that, is there?"
Uhura shook her head, "Nope." She grinned, "And Spock has no desire for the captaincy!"
Gaila grinned back, "Lucky dog!"
