Ali: Since I've decided to be nice... and I'm lazy, I'm just gonna say the disclaimer now. I own nothing but the plot! Please read and review!
Kakashi held his dying brother in his arms, gently moving his silver hair away from his pale face. It'd been years since he had held or even touched for his brother without the intent to take his life, but his heart was breaking as he held his little brother to his chest, tears in his eyes as he hugs the young man to his chest. Eight years difference in their age, but that age gap always seemed huge, and now it seemed like his brother was dying too young. He always knew he would lose his brother too soon for his liking, as soon as his brother wanted to be a ninja, but he never knew it would be so soon emotionally and then after physically. No matter how much he hated his brother, or thought he hated his brother, he loved him. You could never truly destroy a bond like that, when you raise them.
"K-Kaka," Kabuto whispered weakly, lifting his eyes to meet his older brother's.
"Shh, shh... don't speak," Kakashi begged. "Save your strength."
"What's the point if I'm gonna die anyway? There's something I want to say," he chokes out before he coughs up blood.
Kakashi presses his lips together under the mask. "I'm sorry Kabuto... I never meant a word when I said I hated you, and everything I've every done... I've regretted, but my pride prevented me from following you when I needed to."
Kabuto shakes his head and chuckles. "You know, I was gonna say sorry too... I always admired you, and even made it a goal to be like you, or even stronger, but I guess that's not what happened. I didn't mean it when I said I hate you, never completely. I was hurt and confused, and I let that take over for so long-" he stopped to cough up another mouthful of blood before he breathed raggedly and continued. "I guess I forgot about the love I shared with you and the people in the village... I lost my Will of Fire for a long time... Protect our village for me, okay?"
Kakashi nods and smiles. "I will, with my life."
"D-don't do anything stupid either," Kabuto said with a chuckle. "And... I want to be buried in the village... if you can..."
"I promise." Kakashi said before he lifted his hand to his mask and put two fingers underneath all of them. "I know it's been years since you've seen my face... I want you to remember it."
Kabuto's eyes watered as he smiles. "I'd like that."
Kakashi pulled down his mask, looking younger than when he had the mask on. His face, Kabuto had to admit, was handsome, and looked a little like his, but more masculine and a few features that were different from his, like dimples. They talked for a while, and Kakashi revealed what happened to his mother to him, and Kabuto finally understood some of his brother's pain. When Kabuto's breathing labored more Kakashi lowered his head and kissed his little brother's forehead, like he used to when he was little and putting him to bed.
"Goodnight, Kabuto... I love you," he whispered.
"Night Kaka... I'll see you later," he said, his eyes already losing sight. "And I love you, too."
Kabuto closed his eyes went limp in Kakashi's arms. Kakashi pulled up his mask before any other could see and hugged his baby brother tighter, sobbing into his hair. Their broken bonds were repaired in the end, at least, and he felt regret... but it wasn't overwhelming like with Obito or Rin. He felt at peace because before it ended he made amends, even if he lost the one he raised. He felt sorry for the lost times they had together. He would never hold his niece or nephew in his arms or hand his daughter or son to their uncle. He would never see his brother married, nor vise versa. Kakashi, when he was younger, always assumed that he would be the one dead first, and his younger brother second... after all, that was how it was supposed to go, but in the end it was the other way around.
"Kakashi... are you alright?" Gai asked, putting his hand on his friend's shoulder.
Kakashi wiped his eyes with his sleeve and gave a watery smile before nodding. "Yeah... we made up."
Gai smiled and nodded, having hated seeing how far the brothers had gotten. "I'm proud of both of you... Let's go, we'll bury him."
The Hatake nodded and carried his brother's dead body. The younger shinobi and kunoichi he'd grown to care about question why he had Kabuto, but he simply say, "He's my brother."
"What?!" Naruto shouted, eyes wide as his eyes flashed from one to the other. "Your brother?"
"Yeah... it got rough, but... we made up in the end," Kakashi said softly, looking at his brother. He looked like he was asleep. "And I'm gonna bury him in the village. I promised that I'd bury him there."
They nodded and went into the village to bury his brother.
I guess everything can be repaired.
Ali: And that's a wrap! Hope you enjoyed!
