"Youre trying on this, and this, and this, and this," Caroline commanded, pulling various dresses off a rack for Elena.
Elena laughed, "What about your dress? What are you trying on?"
Caroline stared blankly at her. "Are you okay? I'm Caroline. Caroline Forbes. The girl who has her entire life planned out to the minute. Do you really think I don't have a dress already?"
Elena rolled her eyes with a smirk, "You're insane."
"I know. Bonnie!" she exclaimed, looking for her next victim, an emerald green gown in tow.
Elena counted her dresses, she had 8 to try on already and they had been in the store for less than ten minutes. She found a dressing room, and tried on the first one. It was a strapless navy gown, ruffled from the waist down. Elena shrugged, she wasn't amazed with the dress, but knew Caroline would kill her if she didn't show her. "Care?" she called, opening the door. Caroline was practically pushing Bonnie into a room, and turned to Elena.
"Lena!" she squealed.
"I don't like it," Elena asaid simply. "Its pretty, but I think I could do better. Plus I don't want Damon to have a navy vest with a black tux, that looks bad."
Caroline sighed, "He doesn't have to wear navy, he could wear silver," she pointed out.
"I'll try the red one," Elena said, turning on her heel.
"Wait, she's not getting the navy?" Bonnie called from her stall.
"Nope, she's a dream crusher," caroline said, now sounding bored.
Elena laughed, "You want it?"
"Yeah, let me try it," Bonnie said, walking out in a pink dress Caroline had chosen. "This is just no. Not working for me," she said, gesturing towards the tulle skirt. She took the dress from Elena, who was now taking the red dress off the hanger.
"I am hurt. I feel betrayed," Caroline said, half joking. She liked to believe she had good taste, but they never liked what she picked out for them.
"This is it. Not even trying on another dress," Elena announced.
"Lena, it cant be that bad, if we don't find anything here we can go somewhere else."
"No, I'm in love with it," Elena said, opening the door.
(Okay, I saw this dress while sweet 16 shopping and im picturing it now and just ahh! This is the dress Elena just put on shop/dresses/viewitem-PD965738)
"Holy shit, Damon is gonna drop dead! You're so getting laid at after prom!" Caroline screamed a little too loudly, drawing stern looks from sales clerks.
Bonnie opened her door to see, "Aww, Elena you look stunning," she said. Bonnie was the type of person who only complimented you when she meant it, so Elena knew she was being honest.
"Did you put on the navy?" Elena asked.
"No, this is the green one, I don't have the body for this Care," she said, opening the door.
"Put on the blue one, lets see that one then!" Caroline said, before interrogating Elena. "What are you gonna do with your hair? How are you gonna do your makeup? What color shoes are you gonna do? Are you going to wear jewelry? Or would it be too much?"
Elena smiled, "I don't know, I just know I'm getting this. Take a picture of it for me?" she asked, handing Caroline her phone.
Caroline took the picture, and quickly sent it to Damon. "Oh no! How did Damon get that?" she asked sarcastically.
"Seriously? You sent it to him?" Elena nearly screamed.
"Yes! Because you look hot! And you were gonna show him anyways," she pointed out.
"You're a pain, you know that Care?" Elena asked, already unzipping her dress.
"Yeah, I know," she started to laugh.
"Whats so funny?" Elena asked, changing into her jeans and tee shirt.
"Damon texted back," she broke off into more laughter.
"Oh God, how bad is it?"
"Theyre still coming in," she said with a laugh, her eyes opening wide. "Well, he says that you look and I quote, completely fuckable, and then went on to say how he wishes there was a back angle so he could see your ass. Oh my God, you guys are kinky, he said he wants to-"
Elena cut her off, lightly hitting her hand, taking her phone to respond. Bonnie came out, the navy dress fitting her perfectly, she looked stunning. "I like it," she said, turning to see herself at every angle in the mirror.
"You're getting it," Elena and Caroline said at the same time.
"Hey babe," Damon said, pulling Elena into a kiss the minute he opened the door. She was staying for dinner to celebrate Stefan's return to sanity. He had been diagnosed as an alcoholic; apparently he had started drinking when Katherine died. With rehab and therapy, he was back to his old self.
"Hey," she said with a smile. He made her so happy, she couldn't explain it sometimes. "Wheres Stef?"
"Woah, are you switching Salvatores or something?" he asked jokingly.
"Oh yeah, I'm dumping my fiancé for his brother," she said quietly, making sure no one could hear them. "I meant to tell you sooner."
"You wish you could get rid of me," Damon said with a smirk. "Hes in the living room, go say hi," he said, nodding in the direction of the room. "Then can I meet you upstairs for a minute? I wanna talk to you about something alone."
Elena laughed, "We cant keep doing that, we're gonna get busted! Stefan knows, and I'm sure your moms gonna figure it out eventually!"
"No, I seriously want to talk."
"Oh, okay yeah, I'll be up in a minute…Everything okay?" she asked, clearly worried.
"I'm alright, don't worry. I just wanna talk to my girl, okay?"
"Okay," she said with a smile, walking into the living room.
"You called?" Elena asked, leaning against the doorway.
"I'm just gonna say it flat out. Can we tell my mom and Stef?" he asked with a pleading look.
"Tell them what?" Elena asked, confused. Damon simply held up his left hand, pointing to his ring finger. "Oh, that."
"Oh yeah, our impending marriage," he said with a smirk. "That thing."
"Damon," she sighed.
"I'm dying to tell someone. Already half dead."
Elena smiled, twirling her hair as she thought it over.
"Fuck, you're so hot when you do that. Come here," he said sliding over on his bed, leaving just enough room for her.
Elena laughed, "You are such a horny teenage boy, you know that?"
"Well I wouldn't be so turned on if you weren't sending me pictures of you in tight little dresses…"
Elena smirked, holding back laughter. "That was Caroline."
"Oh, then thank Barbie for me."
"She read your responses out loud…"
"Oh god….Did she really?" he asked, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Elena laughed, "Yes, she now knows the things you would like to do to me, so thank you for that, it made for quite an entertaining lunch. Come on, lets go downstairs," she said, holding out her hand for him to hold.
They walked down the stairs, hand in hand. Stefan turned and saw them, "Oh God, I'm gonna be sick," he muttered under his breath, looking at their hands.
"Stefan stop being so cynical!" Rose chided, reaching up to hit the back of his head.
"Yeah Stef," Damon sneered, leaving Rose and Elena chuckling at how childish the pair could be.
"I'm Damon, this is my girlfriend Elena, I love her, everyone needs to know, I'm gonna go kiss her and hold her hand because we're that couple and I love her," Stefan said in a high voice, imitating Damon.
They all laughed, "Its true, I do love her," Damon said, hooking his arm around Elena's waist. "But you did get one part wrong."
"What did I get wrong? You guys are brutal with PDA…."
"She's not my girlfriend," Damon said simply. Elena blushed, looking at the ground, too afraid to watch Rose or Stefan's reactions.
Rose looked up, confused. "What, are you breaking up with her?"
Damon laughed, "Quite the opposite, she's my fiancé," he explained.
The room fell silent before Stefan spoke. "Your what?"
"Fiancé. As in we're engaged."
"Damon, can I speak to you in the kitchen?" Rose asked.
"Anything you can say to me you can say to my Lena," Damon said calmly, not moving.
"Damon, get in the kitchen now," Rose said seriously, she meant business.
"I'll be back my love," he said with a smile, kissing Elena's hand and following Rose into the kitchen, not having a care in the world.
"How far along are you?" Stefan solemnly asked Elena, who was standing still in shock.
"Far along in what?"
"How long have you known Elena?"
"Known about what? The engagement? What the hell are you talking about Stefan?"
"Elena when are you having the baby?" he asked, raising his voice, now angry.
"What baby? I'm not pregnant!" Elena shrieked.
"Then why the fuck are you two engaged? You're eighteen!"
"Because we're in love?" she said as if it were obvious.
"Elena, don't be stupid," Stefan warned.
"Stefan, we love each other, that's not gonna change, I can't think of a single reason not to seal the deal."
Stefan rolled his eyes, smirking. "Yeah, that's not gonna change. Wait till he meets his first sorority girl. That's a party school too, there's gonna be girls everywhere, he's gonna change. Guarantee you, he'll change his mind."
"Explain yourself," Rose said simply, her arms folded across her chest.
"I love her, she loves me, we're engaged. We aren't gonna get married now or anything, we're gonna wait till after college."
"When did this happen?"
"At the boarding house in January."
"And you kept it a secret?"
"You never asked."
"I didn't think I would have to ask my eighteen year old that! If you two are waiting, why couldn't you have waited to propose?"
"Why does it matter? I love her. I do. She loves me. I'm happy when I'm with her."
"Well that's great Damon, but what happens when you're at Coastal and she's at Yale?"
"Well Ma, they have these things called cell phones and video chatting and cars and trains nowadays, crazy isn't it?"
"Damon, don't get that tone with me. Its 11 hours, do you realize that?"
"Mom, don't try to tell me my relationship is doomed to fail," he growled before storming out of the kitchen into the living room.
"Lets get out of here Lena, I cant be here," he said through gritted teeth, grabbing his keys off the table.
Elena followed him silently, unsure of what to say. When they got in the car he sped around the corner, eager to get away. "Damon, slow down please," she asked.
"Sorry, diner?" he asked, slowing down the car.
"Sounds good. I love you," she reminded him.
"I love you too," he said, not taking his eyes off the road.
"So did Stefan give you crap?" Damon asked, picking a fry from Elena's plate.
"These are so good," Elena said, hoping to change the subject.
"What'd he say?"
"Nothing, its not important," Elena said with a convincing smile.
"You sure?" he asked.
"We're not doing anything wrong, theyre just shocked. You know that, right?" he asked, reaching across the table for her hand.
"I know," she said quietly, watching him toy with her ring, she had started wearing it more frequently now.
"So prom next week? We're still going?" he asked, hoping to move onto a lighter subject.
Elena smiled, "Yes we're going, you aren't getting out of this!"
Damon groaned, "Ugh fine, what are we doing after?"
"Care rented a house on the beach, we'll have the whole weekend together."
Damon rolled his eyes, "So that means football boy is going?"
"Yes, Tyler is going. So are Matt and Bonnie."
"He's such a dick, I don't get what Caroline sees in him…"
"Well isn't that the pot calling the kettle black," Elena pointed out with a smirk.
"But I know I'm a dick! He doesn't! At least I'm not a dick to you, he walks all over her, that's just from what I can see."
Elena shrugged, she had never been one to gossip, but she saw where Damon was coming from. "Bonnie and Matt are going together," she said, reaching for another fry.
"Oh really? Are they a thing?"
"No idea, Bonnie's been so weird and secretive lately."
"That's weird, I mean you tell her everything about your love life," he said with a glance at her ring.
Elena rolled her eyes, "There's a difference between your prom date and your fiancé Damon."
"Of course there is, but it's the principle of it, you can't get pissy because Bonnie isn't telling you things while you've been keeping this from her..."
"Who said I was getting pissy?" she asked, folding her arms. "All I said was Bonnie has been weird lately, tell me how that equals pissy, I'd love to know."
Damon sighed, knowing the night was now ruined. "You aren't pissy, alright?"
"No no, I can handle it Damon, please, tell me."
"C'mon, we're leaving," he said, tossing a bill on the table as he stood.
"Oh so you're in charge now?" Elena asked, not moving.
"Alright, what's up with you? Why are you mad this time?" he asked, sitting back down.
"I don't know, you tell me. It seems like you're making my decisions now because mine suck so much."
Damon rolled his eyes, "Lets hear this one..." he mumbled, leaning back in his seat.
"You didn't give me a chance to say no. Do you even realize that?"
Damon's eyes opened wide before he closed them, pinching the bridge of his nose. "If you don't want to marry me, just say it. You can keep the damned ring, we can still be friends, or if you want, you never have to talk to me again. Whatever you want Gilbert, but you need to give me a straight answer, because I cant live like this anymore. Make your decision," he said, calmer than he had expected.
"No, I want to marry you, I honestly do, but your proposal- that's not what I'm referring to right now. But since you brought it up, lets look at the fact that I never said yes, you just shoved the ring on, as if you owned me or something, like I didn't even get a say in the matter!" she paused, taking a deep breath and plastering a smile on her face. "But I'm not mad about that right now. You didn't give me a chance to say we shouldn't tell your mom and Stefan. Its our announcement, not yours. You cant just blurt it out whenever you want to whoever you want," she went on.
"Hold up, you're losing me," he interrupted. "Why the hell can't I blurt it out? It's been what, 3 months now? I'm so proud to be engaged to you. I don't know if that's grammatically correct, but don't give me shit if it isn't," he said, getting a small smile from Elena. "I'm so proud, I want everyone to know. I want everyone to know that I love Elena Gilbert and by some miracle, she loves me. I want everyone to know because I'm just so amazed everyday that you're you, you're amazing, and you chose an ass like me. I'm just not understanding why you won't let me tell everyone how happy I am that you chose me." Elena rolled her eyes, now breaking into a full smile and sighed. "What, should I go on? What else do I have to say?" he asked as she began to chuckle softly. "Whats so funny?" he asked, a grin spreading across his own face.
"You are such a pain in the ass, you know that?"
"I am quite aware, thanks. Whats today's reasoning?"
"You make it impossible to be mad at you for more than ten minutes."
"So is that you giving up? Or am I gonna have to do the sexy eyes?" he asked, already furrowing his brows for the smolder.
Elena laughed, covering her face. "No! Not the sexy eyes!" she managed to say through her laughter. "I'm gonna make you a deal," she said seriously as soon as she collected herself.
"And what would that be?"
"We'll start telling people," she started.
Damon's eyes lit up, "Wait, what?"
"We can tell people," she went on with a smile. "We can battle teen pregnancy rumors and tell people we know we're young and nod when they tell us its stupid, because I love you. And I want people to know that you chose me."
"Wow, way to rip off my speech babe," he mumbled.
"Damon, I'm serious. I wasn't hiding it because I'm not proud of us, or ashamed of you or anything. I didn't want to tell people because you know we aren't gonna have too many supporters, exhibits a and b being your mom and Stefan."
He nodded, "I know, but fuck them. Simple as that. If they love me, they'll want me to be happy. They should know by now that you make me happy," he said, her favorite smile coming to his face. It wasn't the grin of his laughter, it wasn't the smirk of the boy trying to be sexy, it was the soft smile of a man finally letting his walls down.
"You know my dad isn't gonna take it to well either," she said quietly, twisting her ring.
"I know," he said, feeling a twinge of guilt that he would put her through that. There was nothing she hated more than tension in her family, and the engagement was sure to cause that.
"I love you," she whispered, reaching for his hands.
"I love you more," he said, kissing her hand before standing. "Where to?" he asked, digging through his pockets for his keys.
"I dunno, what do you wanna do?"
"Do I have any chance of getting laid tonight?" he asked, half joking, opening her car door.
"In the car?"
"In the car?" he echoed, shocked that she took him seriously.
"We'll see," she said, smirking as she looked out the window.
"Tease," he muttered sarcastically, starting the engine.
Elena laughed, "Shut up and drive!"
"Yes Ms. Daisy, where am I taking you?"
"Let's run away," she said quietly, a soft smile on her face.
"From what?" he asked.
Damon looked out the windshield, the guilt turning into a wave now. He shook his head, ashamed that he was selfish enough to do that to her. "I wish we could," he said, wrapping his arm around her as he started backing out of the parking lot.
"Let's go to the falls!" she said, lightening the heavy atmosphere.
"Done," he said with a crooked smile as he turned on his turn signal.
