I'm not the biggest fan of Merle+Beth, but I couldn't resist, the song Beth sang tonight is called Hold On by Tom Waits.

Merle's ears perked up at the sweetest sound he'd ever heard, slowly he inched into the main part of the cell block. It was that pretty blonde girl, the farmer's daughter, Merle closed his eyes and listened

"With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Oh, the moon was gold, her hair like wind
Said, 'Don't look back, just come on, Jim'"

He'd never heard a prettier sound, she was an angel, perfect in every way, he 'membered earlier when she'd gotten everyone to stop fightin'.

"Oh, you got to hold on, hold on
You gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here
You gotta hold on"

could she had picked a more fittin' song?

"Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone's looking for someone to blame"

she really was a pretty one, Merle looked around at the others, they was all smilin' and cheery, she'd lifted their spirits with nothin' more then a song. He looked back at her and they made eye contact, she smiled and he blushed, he fuckin' blushed, Dixon's don't blush.

"When you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said, 'Baby, I still love you'
Sometimes there's nothin' left to do."

The redneck looked down at the floor, he wondered if she'd even shared a bed with anyone, damn it Dixon!, he told himself, she's just a kid!

"Oh, but you got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here
You gotta hold on"

Merle looked over at his brother, he was looking at that mousey chick, what was 'er name? Carol? Yeah...that was is, Carol, she was the one with the bastard husband. Was that the real reason he came back? Merle looked back at Beth

"Well, God bless your crooked little heart
St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken China voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down
Then you burn your mansion to the ground
Oh, there's nothing left to keep you here
But when you're falling behind in this big blue world."

This god damn song reminded Merle of himself

"Oh, you've got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here
You gotta hold on"

She could be the thing he could hold onto, but he'd just meet her, and she was like sixteen, he was to old, and he ain't no hero, why'd she ever look at him?

"Down by the Riverside motel
It's 10 below and falling
By a 99 cent store
She closed her eyes and started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Oh, your old hometown's so far away
But inside your head there's a record that's playing

A song called 'Hold On', hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there
You gotta hold on."

Merle pushed his thoughts away and just listen to his little angel

"You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there
You gotta hold on

You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here
You gotta hold on

You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here
You gotta hold on

You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, baby
You gotta hold on, girl
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on"

She smiled over at him, and he tilted his head, she really was beautiful.
