Note: Previously, in "The Allure of Darkness," Klaus and Caroline meet their daughter and Klaus tells Caroline that Mikael found them a place that is big enough for all four of them.
Hey, lovelies! I know that I've been way behind on my updates for this story (the last update being May 17), but I haven't really been inspired by anything lately. No spoilers!
Stefan and Rebekah's Mansion, Chicago Suburbs – 6 Months Later...
Klaus smiled at Caroline as they arrived at Stefan and Rebekah's mansion. Today was Rebekah's baby shower and the entire Mikaelson family was going to be in attendance to celebrate with them. The thing that Klaus was the most happy about was the fact that both Liam and Anastasia were healthy despite the scare when they were born. Caroline noticed her husband's smile and smiled back as she got the bouquet of lilacs out of the car, as well as the present that she and Klaus had bought.
"Did I tell you how beautiful you are today?"
His question made her smile even more. "Not yet, but I have a feeling that you're going to before the day is over."
Klaus chuckled. "Well, you look extremely beautiful today, my love. That dress is quite becoming on you. I just hope that Rebekah doesn't think that you're upstaging her."
"That's impossible," said Caroline. "I could never upstage your sister."
"I was joking, love," said Klaus. "Though, I was serious about you being beautiful." He kissed her softly. "I don't regret marrying you, Caroline, not at all. You were and still are the best thing that ever happened to me. I was destined to save you from that fire when you were ten, just like you were destined to move here to Chicago and attend law school."
Caroline giggled, grabbing the car seat containing Liam, waiting as Klaus grabbed the car seat containing Anastasia. Once they had both the babies and their gifts, they walked to the door and rang the doorbell. After a few minutes of waiting, they were greeted by Stefan, who was holding Evelyn in his arms.
"Hey, you two."
"Hi, Stefan," said Caroline. "Are we late?"
"No, you're actually on time," said Stefan. "Elijah and Amelia got here about an hour ago. Unfortunately, Kol and Lexi couldn't make it because Kol had a last minute appendectomy to perform at the hospital and Lexi is visiting her cousin in Peoria, taking Nadia and Xavier with her. Finn and Sage are coming, though. I just heard from them. They said that they just had to drop Ruby and Bridget off at Sage's parents' house and then they'd be here."
Klaus nodded. "And the guest of honor? Where is she?"
"She's out with Mikael, Eleanor, and their twins," said Stefan. "She doesn't know the shower is a surprise. At first, I didn't think I was going to be able to keep up the lie, which is ironic considering that I'm a cop." He smiled. "In either case, this is going to be an awesome baby shower."
Caroline looked at the decorations, admiring them. The baby was going to be a boy, so there were blue and white streamers all strung up along the walls and ceilings, as well as signs that read, "IT'S A BOY" in big, bold letters.
"I love the decorations, Stefan. You did an awesome job."
"I wanted everything to be perfect, especially since, you know, we're having a boy."
Klaus nodded. "Well, I think it's safe to assume that he's going to be loved and spoiled." Curiously, he added, "Have you and Rebekah discussed names yet?"
"We have," said Stefan. "We're naming him Dante Vincent Salvatore."
"That's a strong name," said Caroline. "I guess that with your Italian ancestry, you wanted him to have a name that reflected the strength of that ancestry."
Stefan nodded. "You could say that, yes." He bounced Evelyn gently and his face grew serious. "Sometimes, though, I worry about Rebekah. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that she's not going to be a good mother, since I've seen the way she is with Evelyn, as well as with Sabrina and Olivier and even Ruby and Bridget, and Nadia and Xavier, and even with your two. It's just that she hasn't been feeling well lately."
"What's wrong with her?" said Caroline. "Did they tell you?"
"I really don't know," said Stefan. "Though, the doctor did tell me to keep an eye on her, which I've been doing. He said it might be pregnancy related, that a lot of mothers experience some kind of anxiety, or even depression, especially in the late second trimester, early third trimester."
"So, she's not really sick?" said Caroline. "She's just anxious?"
"That's what I was told," said Stefan. "I hope that it doesn't get worse when the baby comes."
Klaus listened to what they were saying and took Liam's car seat out of Caroline's hand, taking both of them over to the parlor, seeing that they looked like they were ready for a nap. Shortly after he did that, he saw a car pull up.
"Stefan, I think Finn and Sage are here."
Stefan nodded, and handing Evelyn to Caroline after she put the lilacs and the present down, went to the door and saw the eldest Mikaelson brother and his wife walk up the porch steps, Finn carrying the presents to be chivalrous. He gave a smile to his brother-in-law as he walked in. Sage did the same.
"I take it that Rebekah isn't here yet?"
"No, she's still out with Mikael and Eleanor, but she'll be here soon," he replied. "Klaus and Caroline just got here, though, and so did Elijah and Amelia."
"Good, Finn and I were worried that we'd be the only ones here," said Sage. "At least our fears are unfounded."
Caroline saw Finn and Sage coming in and greeted them with a smile. She had no doubt that this shower was going to go off without a hitch and, despite what Stefan had just said, Rebekah was going to enjoy herself, as well as bask in the glow of the family love around her. Klaus came over to his wife after putting the twins down for a nap, noticing her smile.
"I see someone is confident that Rebekah is going to enjoy this party."
"I'm not just confident, I know she's going to enjoy this," she replied. "Seriously, what mother wouldn't enjoy receiving attention from her family while preparing to welcome a new life? Little Dante is going to come into this world knowing that his grandparents, aunts and uncles love him and want him to have nothing but the best."
Klaus smiled and before he could reply, he saw a car pull up not long after Finn and Sage arrived. He went to the window to see who it was and looked toward the others. "They're here."
Upon hearing him say that, Stefan had everyone get into position while he went to answer the door. So far, Rebekah had no idea that her husband had set this whole thing up. The only thing she knew that he had arranged for her to go shopping with her father and stepmother and then, possibly some alone time with him afterward. When he opened the door, he smiled at the five people that stepped out of the car.
"How was the shopping trip?"
"Wonderful," said Mikael. "Eleanor bought some new outfits for Sabrina and Olivier. I tell you, she dotes on those little angels. Then again, that is the sign of a good mother."
"And Rebekah?" said Stefan. "How did she enjoy it?"
"She did cry a few times, I won't lie about that," said Mikael. "Thankfully, she had us there to make things not seem so bad."
Stefan nodded, although he did feel bad that there were a few emotional breakdowns. He also hoped that the baby shower would really put a smile on his wife's face. She needed this, especially this close to her due date.
When he saw Rebekah, Stefan immediately went to her and kissed her softly, wrapping his arm around her shoulders as he escorted her into the mansion, Mikael following after them, along with Eleanor, who was carrying Sabrina and Olivier in their car seats. No sooner did they walk in than Klaus, Caroline (holding Evelyn), Finn, Sage, Elijah, and Amelia all popped out to say, "Surprise!"
Rebekah blinked when she saw them, looking at her husband. "Stefan, did you have anything to do with this?"
"I won't lie to you, Bekah," he replied. "I wanted you to enjoy yourself today, so I planned this shower for you. That's why I arranged for you to go shopping with Mikael and Eleanor. I didn't want the surprise to be ruined." He kissed her again. "Are you surprised?"
"Well, I have to admit, that was sneaky of you," said Rebekah. "But, yes, I am surprised." She smiled at him and returned his kiss. "I love you, Stefan, so very much, and I'm sorry if I worried you these past several weeks."
"What are you sorry for? You did nothing wrong," said Stefan. "A lot of mothers go through what you're going through." He smiled. "But, let's not think about that right now. The most important thing is that our family is here to celebrate with us."
Rebekah nodded and, after giving her husband another kiss, joined the rest of the family in the parlor for an afternoon of togetherness.
Note: Yeah, I decided that this was the perfect place to end the story, since everyone is happy. I might do a sequel, but not right away. I want to give you guys some time to recover from the conclusion of "The Allure of Darkness." Thank you for joining me on this journey from start to finish! :)
