Ch. 25 Next Life

Maybe I'll meet you in my next life
If that's okay with you...
~Next Life by Drew Ryan Scott~

Well, I'm alive. That's the first thing I think every morning when I wake up. Sure, I should be happy that after all the power I used and how weak I was that I am alive but yet there was still a weird feeling about still breathing. After Victoria and I did the chant, the war did in fact end. All of us were healed instantly – physically anyway. I still held a part of Dark Angel in me which hurt me emotionally from time to time since they didn't exist anymore but I managed to ignore it. That was one thing that I could ignore.

With a sigh, I raised myself from my bed. It's been exactly 3 years since the war ended. I'm 20 now and live with my parents who were released from Hell after the war ended. As soon as they hit the surface, they were transformed to the age they were supposed to be but they didn't care. They were free and they were with their daughter. Over the past three years, I became very close to my mom. Turns out, we had a lot in common. We both liked to draw and listen to metal music. I wouldn't take my mom as the metal music type but hey, it worked. I also became a huge daddy's girl. I would almost never leave his side when he first came back. My dad loved it though. He had missed his little girl. Not even a year back, though, my mom gave birth to my baby brother. My parents gave me the honor of naming him. So, I named him Aaron. I had always liked the name so I decided on that. My parents chose his middle name which was Joseph. We usually call him AJ which is cute. He looks like a little AJ with his red hair and bright dark green eyes. I loved him to death.

Reluctantly, I looked over to my nightstand. The first thing that caught my eye was the picture of Scourge and I. I had taken the picture with my phone in front of a mirror. I was standing there in one of Scourge's sweatshirts with my hair down in waves while he had his arms around me, towering over me. I was smiling while Scourge had his sexy smirk on his face. Tears brimmed behind my eyes. Sometimes I tried to forget that he was real. I would try to convince myself that I spent 2 years sleeping through a nightmare instead of actually living in one. But then again, all I had to remind me of Scourge were pictures. If I didn't want to remember him then I wouldn't had printed out every single photo I had of him.

The first couple of months were really hard for me. I was depressed when I was by myself. The longing I could ignore when I was around other people came back and there was nothing to distract me from it. I used to cry – a lot. But after a while, I figured that crying wasn't going to bring him back. I drew pictures of him, determined to keep his face etched into my memory. At first, I would draw his demon face since it was the last thing I saw of him. Of course, they eventually settled into his normal, beautiful face. But once I had drawn myself out, I was out of options. The only thing left to do was stare out my window and wait for the flash of black wings to pass by my window. Of course they never came but I still hoped. Even now when I couldn't go to sleep, I would just stare out there and pray that I would see him again.

"Rosy," AJ exclaimed as I walked into the kitchen. I pasted a smile on my face as I greeted him. My parents smiled at me as they also greeted me.

"Are you hungry? I made breakfast," my mom said, motioning to the pan of eggs she was frying. I shook my head.

"I'll grab a muffin on the way." With that, I went back into my room and changed into my clothes. I was now a full time college student. My major was Psychology with a minor in creative writing. I wanted to be a child therapist when I got older to help kids get through their hard times. My creative writing thing was to help me put my experiences into words. When I started the class, I had slowly been developing a book based off what I had gone through with the Dark Angels. A young adult fiction since paranormal romance/action adventure was the new book trend lately. My parents told me that once I got my story out – although it would be for entertainment's sake – I would feel better. I had to admit that they were right. Since I started writing the book, I felt all the weight I had been putting on my mind flow away.

After throwing on a pair of black jean shorts, a mayday parade tank top and combing my curls into waves, I headed out of the house. I didn't live far from the college I attended so I usually walked there every day. The weather was always nice since we moved to California so I did enjoy the fresh air. I walked into the local coffee shop that was on my way and smiled at the cashier I had befriended. He attended the university as well and was pretty cute. He was some type of Spanish with dark brown eyes, jet black hair and very tanned skin. His accent was noticeable but it wasn't as strong as Scourge's was. "Hey Alex," I greeted him.

"Hey Rosa. You look great this morning," he said, shooting me his charming smile. I had to admit that he was very attractive and has had a crush on me for three years now but I kept him in the friend zone. I don't know why but I wasn't ready to date again. I wanna say it's because I can't stop comparing him to Scourge but I know that I'm just still in love with someone I can't be with.

"Thanks. Can I have a caramel cappuccino with a coffee roll muffin please?"

"Of course you can," he said before going to make my drink. "So, what are you doing Saturday night? There's a Tim Burton movie marathon going on at the theatre and I was wondering if you wanted to go?"

"Of course. Sounds great."

"Okay, say I pick you up at 6?"

"Yea. I'll ask Tori and Cody if they wanna come too." Alex's enthusiastic smile fell a little bit. Every time he asked me out on what would be a date, I usually drag Victoria and Cody into it. Cody had forgiven me throughout everything that happened. I had cried in his arms the whole night after the battle in which he heard me out on everything. I was lucky to have a friend as good as him. Victoria, on the other hand, had become more of my sister. Although we were different in every way known possible, we were closer than close. I actually allowed her to dye my hair black in which it has been for the past 2 years now. I liked it that way. I also allowed her to dress me up from time to time. Only when her begging got on my nerves though.

"Alright, kool. Are we still on for studying on Thursday in the diner?"

"Of course." He handed me my things with a smile. I smiled back politely. "I'll see you around."

"Bye, bonita."

"Peace, chico." He chuckled as I held up my deuces fingers as I walked out the café. I continued my way down to the University Quad as I sipped at my cappuccino. One thing I did love about Alex is that he always made my coffee just right no matter what it was. It was a lifesaver in the morning or when I was on the run to be somewhere.

"Hey whore," Victoria greeted me as I approached her and Cody who were lying on the grass. They were still happily dating. Sometimes I thought it was cute and other times, it made me want to barf. They were just disgustingly lovey dovey. Either they couldn't keep their hands off each other or they talking in their lovey language. Sometimes it could be a bit much. I loved them together though. They were a cute couple.

"Hey bitch," I replied. "Hi Cody."

"What's up girl? Ooo, you bought me a muffin." He took my bag from my hand. "Ew, coffee roll. Keep this." I giggled as he threw my bag back at me.

"Wanna share," I asked Victoria. She shook her head.

"So, did Alex ask you out again?"

"And? Did you say yes?"

"I told him you guys would come."

"Tori, I don't wanna hear it."

"But the guy is hot. I mean it's not every day a hot lacrosse player with a sexy accent is hitting on you."

"In Rosy's world it is. He hasn't set his sights on anyone else but her since she stepped on campus," Cody said.

"Guys, I'm just not ready yet. Especially now that we know they're not exactly dead." Cody and Victoria's faces fell as they came into realization of our discovery. Just last year, I started to see some of the teenagers who were Dark Angels hanging around the high school and the college around here. Cody was with me so he was alert but he didn't read any dark aura on them. They were mortals. We then told Tori and my parents about the new mortal creatures. My parents did their research as well as we did and we all came to the conclusion that only the Dark Angels with enough humanity were reborn into humans. I don't know if that meant that they got their families back and such but I did know that they got their normal lives back. I was happy for them. They deserved a chance at a happy life.

"Well when you are, just make sure you let Papi know," Victoria said before taking a swig of her water. I laughed but shook my head at her. She poked Cody who was staring out across the quad. "You better not be looking at one of those whores' ass," she told him.

"Trust me babe, no other girls' ass can compare to yours," he said as he turned to his girlfriend. Victoria smiled in victory.

"Really." He pecked her lips. "But I was just looking at something. Hey, Rosy, you wanna go take a walk or something?"

"Why can't I come," Victoria asked. "My class doesn't start until 9."

"You can come too. Let's just go, alright?"

"What's the rush," I asked. Cody looked down.

"See for yourself," he said, nodding his head in the direction where he was pointing. I looked over and my eyes almost bulged out of my head. Lounging around the quad steps was Scourge. He looked almost the same as when I saw him before but a little older. He sported some facial hair but it wasn't scruffy looking. It looked nice on him. His green hair was a bit longer and fell into his ice blue eyes. His body was still tall and very muscular. He wasn't alone though. He was with Dante who looked much the same with his piercings and clean shaven face though he had grown some muscles. It looked as he was teasing Scourge, wrapping his arms around his friend a couple times as they laughed. Roxy was with them as well. I could tell she was a lot older than before. She was now a pre-teen but she was cute. I realized that she looked a lot like Dante. Maybe they were related or something.

"I didn't want to tell you because I didn't know how you would react," Cody said.

"How long have you known," Victoria asked her jaw almost on the floor.

"A month maybe. He's a new student. A couple of my friends were talking about him. He's on the basketball team."

"What grade is he in," I asked.

"Grad student. Only two years above us."

"What major is he in?" Cody let out a small laugh.

"Why don't you go ask him yourself?" I looked up at Cody in shock.

"Wait, you're actually going to let me go over and talk to him?"

"Yes, Rosy. I've been monitoring him. He's mortal. I don't know how since I'm sure we were all positive he had no humanity left but seems he did."

"But what do I say? How do I act?"

"Just be yourself," Victoria chimed in. "He'd be an idiot to not fall in love with a hot piece of ass like yourself." I blushed.

"Thanks, Tori." I looked up at Scourge one more time to see that he was now playfully hitting Dante. "Okay. I'll go talk to him," I said as I got up. My stomach was in a whirl of butterflies. Was this really happening? Was he seriously real? I didn't want to get over there and it was just a faction of my imagination.

"Good luck," Tori told me as I began to walk over to the group of the three ex-Dark Angels. As I approached them, they stopped joking around and stared at me. I was half tempted to turn around and run back to my friends but I stood strong.

"Hi," I said when I reached them.

"Hey there," Dante said, checking me out. "Nice shirt. I love Mayday Parade."

"You do," I asked. Back then, I never really had time to ask Dante about his hobbies and such so I was actually surprised he was interested in this band. I mean he did look like he would be but still.

"Yea. They're absolute geniuses. I'm Dante by the way." He held out his hand. "I'm a senior. Pre-med major."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Rosalinda."

"I'm Roxy. I'm just here because my brothers wanted to be up this early in the morning," Roxy said, smiling widely at me. "You're really pretty."

"Thank you. You're really pretty too." I looked to Scourge who was staring at me, his mouth in a straight line. Dante looked back and forth between us, a grin coming upon his lips.

"Hey, Roxy, let's go get some ice cream," he said, looking to his younger sister.

"But it's 8:30 in the morning and I'm not hungry," she whined. He rolled his eyes.

"Alright, then let's go so that we don't ruin our brother's pimp game."

"Oh. Ohhh," Roxy said. She smiled at me. "Bye Rosy."

"See ya," Dante said before dragging his little sister off. I waved to them before looking to Scourge who now had a small smirk on his face.

"Your siblings are nice," I told him. He nodded.

"Yes, they're very interesting," he said, his deep voice laced with a strong Hispanic accent. Damn, was it always that sexy? Butterflies flew up in my stomach again. "Rosalinda, right?"

"Yes. My name's Rosalinda. That is my name, yes." I blushed when I realized how awkward that came out. Scourge only smirked wider as he stood up. Again, he towered over me but it was cute.

"Miguel," he said, holding out his hand to me. "I'm going to the medical school they offer here. First year but hey, gotta start somewhere right?"

"Yea," I said with a laugh as I shook his hand. "It's nice to meet you, Miguel."

"Same to you. What's your major?"

"Psychology with a minor in creative writing. I wanna be a therapist and an author."

"Sounds ambitious."

"Not as ambitious as a doctor."

"More like brain surgeon." I raised an eyebrow.

"Oh so you like the complicated stuff huh?" His smirk grew into a grin.

"I like science. Besides, I have managed to obtain a 4.0 average since freshman year of college. I think I can handle all of this complicated stuff." I giggled.

"Well if I ever need brain surgery, I'll call you."

"Assuming you'll get my number," he asked with a raised eyebrow. I blushed deeply, causing his grin to widen. "Where's your next class?"

"Fallows Hall."

"Mind if I walk you? Maybe discuss possible dinner plans with yours truly?"

"I would love to."

"Good." He bent down to get his bag before he looked up at me. "Angel," he said. My eyes widened.

"Excuse me?" His eyebrows crinkled together in confusion.

"That's your nickname isn't it?"

"Yea but how did you know?"

"Your necklace," he said pointing to the sterling silver necklace my dad bought me.

"Oh. Right." Scourge – I mean Miguel smirked at me.

"Don't worry, Angel. I won't hurt you." His eyes flashed as he said that causing me to get a bit scared. Again he saw my scared expression and he looked concerned. "Am I saying the wrong things or something?"

"No. No. Sorry. You just, uh, you just remind me of someone."

"Who if you don't mind my asking."

"Just someone I used to know. Come on. Class is about to start and if you wanna discuss possible dinner plans, I don't think you want me to be late." He smirked and put his arms over my shoulders.

"Trust me, I will get you to class even if I have to throw you on my back and run there while giving you piggy back ride." I giggled as he pulled me against him. As he engaged into a conversation about my likes, I couldn't help but see the true boy that I had seen in Scourge. I had been right. Miguel and Scourge were too different people. Miguel was care free, unnaturally smart, funny, sweet, kind, and very laid back. I had only know him for a short while and I could already tell that I would fall in love with him. The only thing that bothered me anymore was Lucifer's threat about rebuilding the Dark Angels and having Scourge kill me – for good. I didn't want to think of Miguel ever turning back into what he used to be but I couldn't help myself. Lucifer was immortal and he was the definition of evil. But everything was over now. I was happy and safe and eventually will be in love with a man I never got to know. All of the worst was over.

Wasn't it?

And there you have it! I'm actually very proud of this story's completion. It was a big work in progress. Possible sequel? Maybe? Depends on how I feel? Thanks to all who read this story and reviewed! Of course, I am planning on writing another story! Always writing! Anything you all want to see? Until next time!
